[50] 18 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786, 1786 October 23, He set out after breakfast. I went to Midland, wrote to Draper to send Scantling for my father & gave the letter to Ch's Porter. Mr.Ingram promised to go w'th Cart to Walkers Saw Mill tomorrow -Note that Capt Walker told me last friday that I might had F Edge plank for Cash at 40/- Com'n Inch at 45/- broad & Flooring at 60/- best inch at 48/- Mr.Ingram to get such as he wants. Cherry tree in bloom, pretty full at Midland. Jos Clark told me one Side of Leather is stolen from G.Taylor -out of two -J.Taylors Negro George being examined confessed that he had stolen a Side Leather from Mr. Shepherd w'ch he produced- J Clark went w'th him to Mr.Shepherd who confined him for trial tomorrow. Ch's Porter brought 221 feet 8 Scantling. 24, Went to Mr. Shepherds where sundry Negro's were examined about stealing leather, but there not being sufficient Proof to condemn them(though circumstances strong) they were all discharged. G.Taylors Cart brought 325 feet Flooring plank from Walkers Sawmill. 25, Ch's Dickinson finished Chimney today. My father came from Haleys this morning & got to C Taylors to Breakfast. Went to Gen'l Muster. Capt W.White came to J.Taylors- Mr.W. Beale spoke about coming to view the land my father intends to sell - Gave Ch's Porter his bond for Scantling. 26, Went to Court, Mr Shepherds Waggon brought sundry Articles for my fathers house from Fred'g viz. Glass, Hinges, Locks, Putty, Paint &c- Paid Capt James Walker in full for Plank had from him £39.9.0 he agreed to pay for expense of Mr.Shepherds Wag'n going to Sawmill & being disappointed. Spoke to Morgan Finnel, who promised to send a Load of Scantling tomorrow by Mr.Shepherds Wag'n at 50/- pr M. Lent said Finnel 6/- to buy files. Gave my measure to Mr. Hancher who promised to have two good pr Shoes made & sent up to Mr Newmans for me- M. Taylor & James ret'd from Culpeper. 27, Went to Courthouse, E.Atkins who was bailed to appear on his trial today charged with Stealing Leather did not appear- Col'o Madisons servant came up from Fred'g with his Masters horses and passed the Court house & says his Master set off in the Stage this morning for Richmond. C.Dickinson began to under-pin the Dairy- Mr.Shepherds Waggon brought from Saw Mill a load of Scantling of Morgan Finnel, 430 feet 4 inches- Capt H.Pendleton & wife came to J.Taylors ab't sunset. Mr.Belmain made a short visit in the evening. 28, Went to Midland with G.Taylor- The locks & Hinges brought from Fred'g not well suited to put on House - Glass pretty good. Dined at Ch's Taylors. Got some Apples in his Orchard & brought home. Capt Pendleton &c bro'r James & family went to Mrs.Thomas's & ret'd in evening- Do.my father. Mrs Thomas very ill29, G.Taylor went to C.Taylors, G.C.Taylor who came from there says Capt Conway is there. Got my two flannel vests made by Mrs Burnley brought home by Frank Ja Gaines called on his return from Mrs Thomas's where a Daughter of Capt. Buckner's (who died last tuesday, supposed by swallowing a Bean the Saturday before, or of worms) was buried today- Capt Pendleton & wife set off after dinner to J.Waughs, on their way home. 30, Rainy morning & for some hours before day. No rain since 6th inst till this. Mr. Belmain came before Breakfast & got a Licence to Marry Lucy Taylor. M.Throckmorton & sister, Tho Barbour & sister and Miss Polly Moore came here after dinner. 31, Cold and Cloudy- Began to wear my Flannel Jacket. Bro'r James went yesterday to see Maj'r Madison by whom he wanted to send to Richmond, he was at Col'o Madisons & is not going - Bro'r James staid at Col.Madisons last night & got home to dinner. Mr.Nat Gordon & his brother & the Company who came last evening & G.C.Taylor dined here and went away in evening- Mr.Gordon talks of purchasing Maj'r Willis's land & wanted to get the courses of it- Ch's Dickinson began to Rive laths & nail them on yesterday & to day. The 28th I got 11 yards fine linen, which my father let me have, cost 2/6 Ster'g per yard.

[51] 19 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786. 1786 November 1, My father came from Mr.T.Bells & says he heard that the Rev'd Alex'r Balmain was married to Lucy Taylor yesterday. Weather cold & Cloudy, some snow upon Great Mountains2, Very great White Frost and Ground Frozen, weather cold. Went to Court of examination on Micajah Morris, charged with Stealing a Horse, the property of Wm Pettyjohn a Delegate from Monongalia- He was sentenced to be sent to Gen't Court for further trial. Bro.James's wife dined at Capt Burnleys with Mr Belmain & spouse & R.Taylors family- Says J.Taylors family & G.Taylors company are desired to Dine at Uncle E.Taylors tomorrow. Gave Mr.F.Madison a memo to purchase some Locks &c at Fredericksb'g next week3, G.Taylor, J.Taylor, Molly Taylor & F.T. went to E Taylor to dinner. Maj'r Moore & family & Capt Burnley & family dined there- Paid Mrs.Burnley for making 2 vests. Weather rather warmer. Mrs Glassell at Uncle Taylors. 4, Went to Midland-Mr Ingram had sent the Cart to Capt Walkers for load Plank which was brought in Evening- I carried some Hinges to Mr.Shepherds Shop to have the holes out for screws. Got 11 pair Hinges cut & left 9 pair which are to be cut Monday morning- Bought 6 pr hinges for G.Taylor at Maj'r Lees at 3/2 pr pair, who had bought 6 pair at 1/6 the 2d instant. Exchanged 1 Doz Knives & forks at Maj'r Lees which had bought there & gave 3/6 more- Ch Dickinson gave me a [Molcdore?] to get changed & next day at Church pd him 6 Dollars. Saw Col'o Madison who had rec'd a letter from his son dated 1st instant which mentioned the Assembly had that day determined against making paper money 84 to 17. Hear that Indians have joined against us in the West & have killed some people, also in Georgia. 5, [Sunday] Went to Church - Mr. Belmain preached, & is to set out with his wife tomorrow on his way home- G.Taylor went from Church to C.Taylors. John Pendleton, his wife and Aunt Thomas got to J Taylors in the evening. Yesterday the Joiners put up the Bodies of the Meat house & Dairy- the underpin'g being done. 6, Went to Court house, Winslow Parker set off with Morris from aol for Richmond Ja's & Ch Taylor went to hunt at Capt Scotts, I dined at Mr. Shepherds, got hinges done, 9 pair to day making 20 in all & paid 5/- Great many Hnds Tob'o rolling- Mr.Belmain, his wife, Mrs Glassell &c set off from Uncle E.Taylors. 7, Went to Midland- Mr. Dickinson underpinning Porch- Ch's Porter Hung some Doors & windows- Weather warm & fine8, My father came to J.Taylors in the morning and I went with him & J.Pendleton to Hubb'd Taylors and viewed about thirty acres of G.Taylors land which H.Taylor wanted to buy but they did notagree. G.T. said he would not take less than 25/- per acre. Maj'r Moore, his wife, and Rob't Taylors wife dined at J.Taylors. 9, J.Pendleton went to Capt Burnleys who sent word that Maj'r Willis was to Hunt from Hub'd Taylors this morning- He returned at noon & had not started a Fox- Set in rainy about 12 o'clock - My father came from his building and dined here- rained moderate all the afternoon- Cart bro't load from Walkers. 10, John Pendleton & F.T. went to Wilsons Store bought some trifles - 4 paint Brushes for G.T. -1/3- Laid by Teakettle- We came to Col'o Madisons to Dinner & staid till next day- This day dark, cloudy & little rain. 11, Col Madison, J.Pendleton & F.T. went to Maj'r A Madisons, where a Company of young ladies had been quilting and had a Dance last night & the Company staid till this evening when most of them retired- Maj'r Moore & wife there we got home after sunset. Aunt Thomas here. Col.Pendleton got here about 7 o'clock at night (on his way home from Richmond). Cleared in the night and a fine day but cool.

[52]20 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786, 1786, November, 12, Cool mornings- Col.Pendleton went after breakfast towards home. Aunt Thomas, Sister, M.Taylor, John Pendleton & J.Taylor jun'r went to Church. Bro'r James having hurt his leg & I not being very well did not go to Church. Little rain, G.Taylor, C.Taylor & Miss M.Chew came here from Church to dinner- The latter staid 'till next day- Hear Aunt Battaile is dangerouslyill. 13 G.Taylor came by on his way to Hub'd Taylor's Col Taylors Waggon is there, came up Saturday and brought up 1 doz chairs from R'd Taylors for G.Taylor. Bro'r Benj'a wrote up to have his young horse sent down by William & the Waggon who are to go tomorrow. Miss M.Chew went home before noon- G.Taylor came here from Hub'd Taylors to dinner & went after to C.Taylors. 14, James bro't Jug of oil from H.Taylors to the building- My father went to Midland early, expected the Waggon wou'd have brought some Chairs, w'ch Col Taylors Wag'n bro't from Caroline, but the Wag'n did not. G.T.came here to breakfast & staid the day. Aunt Thomas, J.Taylors wife & M.Taylor went to Maj'r Lees & ret'd in evening. H.Taylors Waggon brot two loads for J.Taylor from Walkers Mill. 15, Went by Midland- saw H'd Taylor, who said his Waggon should go next day for Timber from Walkers Mill- I went to Uncle E.Taylors, My father, Aunt Thomas J.Taylor & family dined there. 16, G.Taylor & F.T. went to Midland. H.Taylors Waggon came by & went for a load, which it brought from Walkers in the evening- I dined at C.Taylors with G.Taylor- Raised the Roofs of Meat house and Dairy- My fathers Negroes went rolling with two [Hads?] Tob'c. 17, J.Taylor & family, G.Taylor & F.Taylor Dined at Maj'r Moores, he was gone to Fred'g, C.T. & F.T. came by Uncle E. Taylors to J.Taylors18, Rain, hail & snow, the snow cov'd ground but melted chiefly as it fell. G.Taylor staid here. 19, [Sunday] Cloudy & Misty. I paid Morgan Finnel 15/6 the balance of 21/6 for 430 feet Scantling. G.Taylor went in evening to C.Taylors- 20, Cloudy & foggy with some rain. The trees & houses covered with ice, which melted off about noon. cont'd cloudy all day. J.Pendleton went to Culpeper Court. I went to Shepherd & Lees stores, saw F.Madison who told me he bought only one lock for G.Taylor, could get no chalk. C.Dickinson (who had been all last week gone to Louisa) returned to work, and sent word he wanted 4 M. more 4d Nails which I got at Lees for G.Taylor. Mr T. Barbour jr came to J.Taylors at night. 21, Foggy, but likely to clear off fine and warm- Two sheep were killed and one wounded last night at Midland by a Wolf or Wolves. I went to Midland, my father was there and came here to dinner. Aunt Thomas, Rob't Taylors wife, Miss Jane Taylor & Miss Nancy Bell & G.C.Taylor dined here. I received a pair Gold Sleeve buttons w'ch Col Madison had made for me to Northward & paid 2 dollars for making, having sent a pair w'ch cost me 15/- so they cost 27/- Maj'r Madison left them with G.Taylor at Ch's Taylors yesterday. 22, Began to snow before day and was about 2 inches deep- Snowed & a mist or rain all day but did not increase in depth. Maj'r Moore dined here, he had been in search of Wolves which laid in the Mountain last night. T.Barbour went away with Maj'r Moore. 23, Foggy wet morning and day. I went to Court-got 1M 4[?] Nails for G.T. at Mr. Shepherds - Very dirty, most of the snow melted, cleared at night. Paid 21/- to W.Martin for C.Dickenson. T.Barbour & G.C.Taylor came to J.Taylors & staid.

[53] 21 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786, 1786 24, Fine clear moderate weather. About half hour before day heard Wolves howl towards Mrs.Thomas's. Went to Court-paid Capt James Walker one half Joe 48/- in part for plank &c G.T. had. Heard that Maj'r Moore, Col.Barbour & Mr.H.Burnley declared themselves Candidates for the next election. 25, Went to C.Taylors to breakfast, ret'd & walked to Court, nothing extraordinary- called at Mr.E.Taylors & supped with Mr.Robb & Mr.W.Martin. Col.T Towles & Mr C.Porter signed their Report concerning the Trustees of Beverleys Estate. I lent my Inkstand & came away without it. Cart went to Walkers Mill for Sand and Plank &c. Heard Wolves howl. 26, [Sunday] I went to C.Taylors (he was from home) I dined with C.Taylor & the family, got my Inkstand. 27, Went to Court house-Hought 4 Chamber locks for G.T. of Joshua Willia for 25/3 they are sorry. Weather Cloudy & cold bot 21b Sugar of Lee 1/6-. I dined with some of the Magistrates &c at Hansfords, Who would not receive pay. C.Dickinson began plastering. 28, Very cold-J.Pendleton & self went to Midland- Dickinson laid on the first coat plaister on the two least rooms above & about the other two. C.Porter & Bramhan only joiners there Mr Hardin Burnley & G.Taylor came home with J.Taylor from Court. 29, They all went to Court- very cold weather. Frost very hard last night, Cloudy day- The Court adjourned till Court in course. G.Taylor came back to J.Taylors from Court. 30, Rob't Taylor came with his gun & went with J.Pendleton by C.Taylors who joined them in a Hare hunt to Capt Brnleys, H.Burnley was there and 5 Hares were killed. G.Taylor went to Hub'd Taylors & came to Capt Burnleys to dinner we stayed till after supper. I p'd Spence Mazingo 3/4- the bal'ce of his acct ag't G.Taylor for repairing Tobacco house. 1786 December 1, Robt Taylor, C Taylor, J Pendleton, the boys and F.Taylor went Hare hunting to Mr.Ingrams, we killed 4 Hares and went to C.Taylors to dinner. 2, Went hunting to Mr.E.Taylors, killed only two Hares-G.Taylor, C.Taylor, J Pendleton & boys dined there, Aunt Thomas was there. 3, [Sunday] I have had a bad cold for several days & sore throat, so did not go to Church, though the weather has been moderate for 4 days. G.Buckner & Mrs James came from Church and dined here. G.C.Taylor & T.Barbour called in evening and agreed w'th J Pendleton to Fox hunt it tomorrow- J.B.Pendleton came at night from Culpeper, Capt Burnley borrowed bro'r James's Chair for his wife & Jenny Taylor to ride in down to Caroline tomorrow- 4, Began to snow before day & snows very fast, cont'd all day and fell 6 inches deep. 5, Cleared in the night. Went to hunt the Wolves -about 20 persons out. Raised two Wolves a little below the Church road- they were shot at several times Reuben Taylor killed one & Ben Winslow wounded the other slightly, but it was not caught. 6, Some went in pursuit of the Wolf that was wounded but did not start it- Went to the sale of Chews attachment on J.P.Adams effects, a good many people at teh Sale, tho' the day cold & cloudy. Bought for G.Taylor [1/2?] Bar's Oker 56lbs for 23/- Bo't for self 7 pr Lea'r breeches for 36/- Terms of Sale 3 months credit, with interest. 7, The sale continued- I went again & bought 2 doz Pewter plates, some thread & scissors for 45/- I gave Jas. Gaines for a Bridle 6/- & for 3 Tin Basters 1/- and sold 1/2 lb thread & 1 pr Scissors for 4/- - Sold John Alcock 1 lb thread for 6/- Exchanged 1/2 lb Thread & 1 pr Scissors with Mr. John Waugh for 1 pr thread Stockings at 4/- Cloudy & thaws some. [54]22 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786, 1786 December 8, damp, Went again to the Sale-But little to sell-Gave my bond, G.Taylor security, for £5.4.0.- 36/- for Breeches & 45/- for plates&c bo't by me & 23/- for Oker bought for G.T. F.Madison paid me £6.0.0. G.Taylor came to J.Taylors, rained a little all day & cold. 9, Snow, hail & fine rain all day. Much ice on the trees & a Sleet on the snow. C.Taylor came to dinner, very cold weather10, Very cold & freezing. Reuben Taylor called in the morning, did not stay long. G.Taylor went to C.Taylors in the evening-[Sunday] 11, J Pendleton went with me to Lees store- I exchanged with Maj'r Lee: 6 pair Lea'r breeches bought at Sale £2.0.0. for Stg. 3 Stamped handk'fs 4.6. 9 1 Silk [do?] 3.9. 7.6 2 yds green plains 4.8. 9.4 1 hat 1.6. 3. 5 1/2 yds lin Drogheda 5.0. 10. 2 lb brown sugar 1.2 = £2.0.0 Paid T.Coleman 2/6 for a bottle Greenough's Tincture brought from Richmond by him. G.Taylor came with us from Court house- Sold J Taylor for his son James 1 pair Leather breeches made by Joel Stoghill for 30/- weather still very cold12, Went to Midland-C.Dickinson Glazing the Windows, he was about them yesterday - William Taylor with Mr.Anthony Sale from Kentucky arrived at brother James's in the evening, (he came by Jonathan Taylors) left his (Williams) family and friends at Kentucky well. (Jonathan Taylor did not move to Ky until 1790. See under date Aug.4,1790 W.K.A.) 13, Mr Sale set off down to Caroline in the morning- Reuben Taylor came here very early & went away before breakfast and said would return. C.Taylor & G.C.Taylor came to dinner. Paid William Martin pr C.Dickinson 12/- J.B.Pendleton set out for Culpeper. Reu Taylor, Maj'r Moore, Hd Taylor & Capt Burnley came to dinner, rainy & thaw. 14, Fine morning, clear and mild. Went to C.Taylors, Majr. Moore, Hub'd Taylor, Reuben Taylor, Aunt Thomas, J.Pendleton & wife, Mary Taylor, G.Taylor, W.Taylor & J Taylor dined there. Wm Taylor came to J.Taylors at night. 15, Cloudy & some fine rain. Went to Maj'r Moores, G.Taylor, W.Taylor, C.Taylor, H'd Taylor, J.Pendleton & F Taylor dined there. Miss Throckmorton there. Bad riding & altho' the snow thaws it goes off very little. 16, Maj'r Moore & wife, Reu Taylor & his wife, G.Taylor, J.Taylor, M.Taylor,C.Taylor G.C.Taylor & self dined at H'd Taylors17, G.Taylor set off down from C.Taylors intending today to Capt Conways -I heard that Capt Burnley got much beaten last night at Hansfords by Gutrech [Good-rich?] Lightfoot- J.Taylor, W.Taylor, J.Pendleton, Majr Moore, H.Taylor & wife G.C.Taylor & F.Taylor dined at Reuben Taylors, this being the first time of my going there. W.Taylor went to C.Taylors at night. Aunt Thomas & M.Taylor came from C.Taylors at night. [Sunday] 18, Went to Mr. Shepherds Shop w'th W.Taylor who got his horses Shoes removed. I bought a wash-bowl at Mr Shepherds but left it there, paid 1/3 -for it. Maj. Lee told me Mr.Jett had left him a few days before, on some difference. I believe Went to his fathers this day - Came with W, Taylor & J.Pendleton to Uncle E.Taylors, J.Taylor & wife, Aunt Thomas, Maj'r Moore & C.Taylor dined there- Uncle Taylor says he does not Expect John Taylor down before Christmas- Maj'r Cowherd overtook us on our way to J.Taylors in the evening.
