[35]3 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR. 1786 FEB. 12, Rev.Taylor dined at bro'r James's-heard that Mr.J.Caines Sr. died the 8th, inst. and to be buried this day. 13, Went to called Court on Jos.Price for buying Tom'o of Wm.Robertson's Negroes. He asked to be whipped-granted-J.B.Pendleton & Miss.C.Pendleton came to my brother's. H.Taylor had a fit in the night. Doet'r Taylor came in the night. 14, Mr.John Thomas dined at J.Taylor's, a fine day-thaw15, Cloudy & some rain. Mr.H.Pendleton Jr.came to Ja.Taylor's. Mr.T.Bell & spouse & Mr.Wallace dined at J.Taylor's16, Nothing remarkable, thaw- Uncle E Taylor's Aggy [a slave] died. 17, My father got to C.Taylor's. I went with J.Pendleton there to dinner. Warm weather, frogs cry.18, My father & brothers, Mr.Pendleton & girls went to H.Taylor's and dined there. 19, Reuben Taylor & my father called here, my father went to Uncle E. Taylor's and returned to C.Taylor's in evening. Reuben dined here. Mrs. Clark (who has been sick some time) grows worse. Snowed at night changed to rain. 20, My father dined here-I exchanged a p'r Silver stone studs w'th H.Pendleton for p'r Cold buttons & gave 7/6 over. Rec'd a note from R.Taylor that W, Morton was at his fathers & would pay an order from Rich'd Taylor for £6. I walked there in the evening and Received the money. John Taylor was here, set uplate at whist. 21, Dined at Uncle Taylor's & returned at night, all day at whist22, Went to C.Taylor's, Mr. Rob't Taylor got there after me. Dined there with my father &c. Jas.Clark came up in the evening & said he thought his wife grew worse-returned in evening. 23, Snowed early-and continued until evening when it rained, fine and cloudy which made a sleet by morning. Went to Court House, not Magistrates enough to make a Court. Let Mr.Fra's Madison have warrant for £12. No.905, for which he is to pay Cash when he sells his tobacco. Came away about 2 o'clock, my father & bro'r Charles dined at brother James's. 24. Clear and cold, windy in the morning-Henry & J.Bowie Pendleton set off for Culpeper. Went to Mr.H.Taylor's, dined with Maj'r Willis and Mr.H.Batta1le (who came up the 22d, with 20 hounds) Maj'r Moore, my father, bro'rs Charles, Geuben & George. 25 My father, J.Gaines & family, dined at bro'r James. 26, Went to Mr. Ingrams, spoke about his building a house for my father, which he said he would undertake and promised to see my father about it tomorrow. I came by C.Taylor's dined there with Maj'r Moore, Willis, Battaile, Wallace, R.Taylor, Js.Taylor, R.Taylor,-T.Barbor jr. Jo. Moore, J's Bell &c.Mrs Haynes. 27, Willis, Battaile & Fox-hunters went to Maj'r Moore's & from there tohunt. R'n Taylor's wife sent to borro a bottle of wine of my brother James who having none I sent it- I went about 11 o'clock to Maj'r Moore's- R.Taylor's wife, who was there had a son born before I got there. The Hunters came to Maj'r Moore's to dinner, not having started any fox-In examining my case of wine the only bottle I took out was cracked & had leaked a little. [The son of Reuben & Rebecca [Moore] Taylor, born this day was named Francis] 28, Bro'r James, J.Pendleton & I went to Doct'r Taylor's, where Capt.Conway & my father were, We dined there & returned at night--Miss C.Pendleton & M.Taylor went on a visit to Capt.Buckner's. [36]4 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 March, 1, My father came by & I went with him to Col Madison's. Capt.Conway rode with us on his way to his Mountain Plantation-there as a small snow fell last night but mostly dissolved by morning and the weather fine. Capt.J.Lee was at Col.Madison's & complained of having slept but little last night on account of cotton sheets being on his bed. he went to Maj'r Madisons in evening. 2, Continued at Col.Madison's, looked into the Trustees Accounts with H.Beverley's estate. Col.Madison jr. while we were here came to breakfast of which he eat sparingly, and then would go to his room till a little before dinner-after dinner play at whist for half bits till bed time, smart snow. 3, Cont'd. Maj'r Madison dined at his father's, caught a fox on the way-ret'd in the evening. 4, Continued, weather cold, snow melts very little. 5, Sunday-Doct'r Williams did'd at Col.Madison's, heard R'n Taylor's wife is very ill. Miss S.Madison went to see her. 6, Rec'd my Memorial & papers sent to Richmond from Col.Madison jun'r who says he did not think my prayer would be granted, and that it would have been useless to present them to Assembly-with Mr.Dunscombs opinion that I was not entitled to half pay &c- Col'o Madison sen'r, my father and I went after breakfast to A.Madison's. Col Madison jr. went there about 10 o'clock. Harry Lee & wife at Maj'r Madison's-Mrs Lee a decent looking woman. The Col.Madisons returned at night-my father & self stayed- Capt.Lee there. , 7 Came down with my father to my brother James's. After dinner my father went to brother Charles's. hear that Rn Taylor's wife cont's unwell-that there was a dance at Mr.T.Bells last evening. 8, Mr. Hoomes called here, got him to take some old clothes to mend. Mr. Robb dined here. Snowed an hour, but not to show on the ground. 9, My father came over & G.C.Taylor & dined. Mr. Robb called on his way home but did not stay long. Mr.J.Gaines came about 12 o'clock-said he had been assaulted by James Shropshire, who wrested a negro wench irom him w'ch he had seised for his father's taxes. 10, Made cut my father's & my own lists of Taxable property & tithes & delivered them to Col'o Madison at Court house. My father, brothers James & Charles & cousin John Taylor came to Uncle Taylor's to dinner- Mr.Wallace at J.T's. Hear that Reuben Taylor's wife cannot walk since lying in-came home in the evening. 11, John Pendleton & the boys went hunting but did not start a Fox, caught some hares. My father dined here & returned to Ch's Taylor's in the evening. The snow is almost gone off. the weather has been rather cold. 12, Wrote an answer to Col.Gar't Minor inclosing him a certificate of Mr.James Overton's service in the Reg't Guards, a Sergt from 20, Jany 1779 to 4, May when I nominated him Ensign w'ch he resigned the 1,Aug't 1779. 13, Bro'r James went to Louisa Court sent letter by him to Col.Minor. Nancy Taylor went to school for the first time to Pierce Sanford+ Hear that Mrs Lewis is to begin a Dancing School this day at Col'o Alcock's. I walked out with my gun, shot a few small brids. My father & Doct'r Taylors family went to Maj'r Moores on a visit. My health has been low for some time. Heard wild Geese cry in night (+ Ann Pendleton Taylor, 3rd child of James T., niece of diarist- m. Thomas Crutchfield-W.K.A.-) 14, Dined at Mr.E.Taylors-Girls Quilting, my father dined there. Uncle Taylor had been to see Mr. Terrill who is in declining low state of health. I walked to Col'o Alcocks-Mrs. Lewis had 15 scholars in her dancing school. Heard that Charles Smith from the Western Country said that Col Richard Taylor & brother William were expected to come in soon. My father came to bro'r James's at night. [37] 5 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 March 15, At bro'r James's- my father here- Rainy cold weather rain all day-warm & lightning at night, my father stayed here to day. 16, Foggy morning, soon cleared off warm and fine springing weather. My father went to Doctors & intends to Capt Burnleys to day- My father, bro'rs James, Reuben Ch's Taylor & family, John Taylor, John Pendleton, Mrs. W. Madison, P. Moore & Hub Taylor dined at Capt Burnleys, had headache very bad in the evening. 17, My father dined at bro'r James's after dinner I went with him to C. Taylor's, same Company there- Fox hunters could not start a fox I returned in the evening. 18, My father came by from C. Taylors I went with him to Uncle E. Taylors to dinner- Mr. J.P. Adams there. I expect he intends to address Miss L.T.- * My father & self returned to bro'r James's [*Lucy Taylor married Rev. Alex. Balmain -W.K.A] 19, Wrote to bro'r Edmund & Cousin Z. Taylor [in Ky.-W.K.A.] expect to send the letters by Mr. E. Craig who I expect will set off tomorrow for Kentucky. Mr. W. Morton called for his deed from L. Taliaferro, hesaid Mr. Thornton's line of land he bo't of John Fitzhugh interferes with his- John Pendleton, his wife & sister, Miss Caty Pendleton set off to Culpeper. Hear Rob't Taylor and wife got up last night from Caroline. My father went after dinner to Chs. Taylors. [Zachary, son of Zachary m. Alice Chew. W.K.A.] 20, Cold raw and windy, a little rain all day. James Gaines dined here. Bro'r James rode to Court House & heard that Mr. E. Craig will not set off before next friday for Kentucky. Hear Mr. Rob't Terrill died yesterday. Saw butterflies 2 days ago. This day makes me 39 years of age. 21, Good day, went to Maj'r Lees & bought some cloth &c for a suit of cloathes, dined with him. Saw Mr. E. Craig who told me he did not think he should set out for Western Country until next week22, Went to Ch's Taylor's to dinner. Jas Clark and bro'r James Sowed Tob'o seed &c. 23, Court day, went to Court- Chs. Dickenson promised to come to work for my father after next Louisa Court. A. Holmes brought up some old cloathes he had repaired- and took Cloth &c to make me a suit. I pd him for mending. Mr. Gordon a candidate treating for votes &c24, Went to Court, Some persons suppose it necessary for Col'o Madison to bester about the election- Let Capt. Conway have Int Warrants for £21. to be paid for when he sells Tobacco. pd. Mr. Wallace £5.11.0 on my father's account. 25, Dined at Ch. Taylor's, my father, bro James, Capt Conway, Mrs Conway, Capt. Burnley and Mrs. Burnley in Company. 26, Bro'r James rec'd a letter from B. Grymes that he declines acting as a magistrate and that he would not take lists. My father dined here, ret'd to C. Taylor's, intends down tomorrow. Lent my bags. Mr. Js. Hawkins & [Wm?] Morton dined after. 27 My father set off for Caroline- I went over to Casolin's, trimmed a few trees. Cold and a little rain. 28, Went to Uncle E. Taylors to shoot snipes with John, Robert & Ch's Taylor, killed only 3 snipes, 2 part'ges, &c. Bro'rs James& Reuben Dined at E.T.- they had been to the store. 29, I was trimming trees &c. Some peach trees in Bloom. 30, Taken with bad cold- Cloudy- Mrs. Lewis's Dancing School- Cloudy & a little rain. Thunder &c in night. Miss M. Chew came to my brothers- Col.Madison & C. Taylor called about 10 o'clock, but did not stay to dinner, went to Ch Taylors31, Mr. R't Taylor dined here, Miss M. Chew [Mildred Chew m. James Coleman-W.K.A.]-they went after dinner to Mr. E. Taylors Jainey & Nancy went to Dancing school accompanied by Molly Taylor. The weather cool, cloudy & small rain. Cold continues bad-

[38]6 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 April 1, Very cold, windy, Hail & Snow, continued from before day until sometime in night the Hail & Snow 2 or 3 inches deep and the weather unusually cold for the season-My cold with cough & sore stomach very bad. 2, Clear, but still cold, fine evening Cough continues bad to day- Mr. Hubbard Taylor, Maj'r Moore, Ch Taylor & Reuben Taylor dined here. H.Taylor's wagon loaded with 2 Hhds Tob'o to carry to Fredericksburg for bro'r James. 3, Hard frost last night, the snow would bear a man & ground Quite hard. Bro'r Reuben came here & Dined, after Dinner he & brother James set off for Fred'g intending to Mr.Jno.Gibsons. Mrs James came here & stayed till the 6th. 4, Rainy from about 8 o'clock and cold. My cold somewhat better. 5, Continued rainy, cold & windy-with a few flakes of snow-Cleared about 9 o'clock at night. 6, Smart frost, the ground raised by it-the day fine. Considerable fresh in river. Went to Mr.Terrill's. Mr. Lelane did not meet and the funeral deferred. Called on return from Mr.Terrill's at Mr.E.Taylor's & dined-Mrs.Moore, Mrs.Burnley, Doct'r Taylor and the Miss Gilberts there. Cousin Rob't Taylor got home from Spotsylv'a Court-Page & Dawson Elected burgesses. Bro'r James returned from Fred'g much fatigued- Heard to day that Maj'r Lee had rec'd a letter from Z.Taylor & P.Taylor which mentioned he expected Col.Richard & Maj'r William Taylor would set off in a little after. hope to see them soon. (Z.T. and Col.R.T. were nephews or grandsons of Maj'r. Lee-W.K.A.-) (Maj'r Wm.T. was brother of the diarist. -W.K.A.-) 7, Fine weather clear, but a little windy. Jno.Taylor & WmZimmerman called going & returning to & from Ch's Taylors but staid very little. Ch's Taylor called on way to Col.Madisons. Rec'd a letter yesterday from my father by bro'r James inclosing £5. Certificates to pay taxes. 8, Very unwell, took Salts-went with John & Rob't Taylor to Ch's Taylor's shooting birds &c. Hubbard Taylor & bro'r James joined- Uncle E. Taylor was there. Mr.P.Pendleton's son James called here on his way to Culpeper9, Continue ill, took another dose of Salts, the weather Cloudy. 10, Went to sale of Mr.W.Bell dec'd Estate. Paid Majr.Lee for Cloth &c bought last month in full per rec't £5.15.3. Rec'd of Reuben Taylor, to be placed to to the Credit of Amorose Madisons bond to C.Taylor £9.19.0. which R.T. owed him for corn. Agreed with Charles Porter jr. to pay at next Court £4.10.0. for 1500 feet of Scantling to be delivered where my father is to build by the 1st of June or sooner if Mr.Ingram will want it before. Mr. Ingram & Robert Taylor was present. Mr. Ingram says he will come to work next week. Joseph Bickers who has had a Barrel of corn for Timber he is to let my father have, applied for another Barrel, which I directed Joe Clark to let him have. Heard Col.Burnley say that Cek.Dickenson had promised to be at his house to work tomorrow-w'ch is thetime he agreed to come to work for my father. I requested Col.Burnley to tell him I expected him, when done at his house. From the opinions of those I conversed with about the ensuing election think Col Madison will certainly be elected. John Taylor had a return of Ague & fever. Called at Mr.E.Taylor's as I walked back from sale. Col.Madison jr there, I did not stay. The Stock & furniture advertised sold. Bro'r James's son Harry been unwell for several days-Had Hoct'r Taylor11, Cool windy weather for the season and cloudy, but without rain. 12. Paid Mr.Jas.Gaines for my taxes and Levies-12/- for Specie tax, 24/- Certificate & 2/6 for 2 LeviesFor my father £ 8.9.4.for Specie Tax for Spence Mazingo 1.0.0. (for work at J.Clarks) 13 County Levies 16.3 10.5.7. Warr'ts£ 10.1.5. Cash 4.2. Certificate tax 10.4.4. including 17 / 9 1/2 which was unpaid last year. [39] 9 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 April 12, Let brother James Taylor have £3.11.7 1/2 of G.Taylor's certificate for which he is to settle. J.Caines, Capt.Burnley & wife dined here. 13, Joe.Clark at work here about Turky house. 14, Walked down the Run, met w'th Capt. Burnley, saw somw fish. Capt. Burnlet shot two and John Moore one, they were Carp, two were 12 inches long-Dined at Capt.Burnleys15, Remained at home. 16, Went to ear Mr.Waddill preach at the Court House-had a very good sermon. He is to preach three weeks hence at Brick Church. A Supscrip'th is made for upwards of £40. & thought will amount to £60. I subscribed 6/- Mr.Leland preached old Mr. Terrills Funeral sermon this day. 17. Mr.A.Classell & Rob't Taylor called in the morning & brother James set off w'th them for Culpeper Court & Election. Bro'r James returned at night. Strother & Pendleton Elected for Culpeper. Miss A.Bell came here to day, also Mr.Ben Porter he did not stay long. I walked to C.Taylor's & gave him a mem'o to get me some medicine &c he intends to Capt Conway's this evening on his way down the Country. Heard Whip poor will cry-Jos.Clark says he heard one four or five days ago. The Asparagus has been up two or 3 days. 18, Went to Election for Overseers of poor at the Court house-John Daniel,Z.Herndon & Sam'l Brockman, were chosen. Hear that Mat Davis, May Burton & Miller were elected yesterday for the uppor district and Mr's Jas.Robb, John Alcock & John Robinson were Elected in the Lower district. Lent Reuben Taylor £9.15.0. which he wants to let H.Taliaferro have & promised to return at Court, so that I have not charged him with it. -Charged 21, April. 19, Intend to Col'o Burnleys to day. Called at Wilson's Store, paid him for 1/6 yd. Linen & 500 small nails 1/3 which bro'r James got for me some time ago. Bought & paid for a hat price 21/- Maj'r Cowherd and self went toCol'o Burnleys to dinner, found John Taylor there. Wm.Madison came to dinner & returned 20, in the evening. Next day, 20th, Col'o Burnley set off for Richmond. Rained 22, hard went on business up the country. While at Col Burnleys played at whist & I lost 3 bitts w'ch pd, Wm.Madison, 56 paid J.Taylor, 1 pd H.Burnley & 14 to Maj'r Cowherd which I intend to pay him at Court. 23. Cloudy & rainy in the evening, the Spring very late. Some fruit trees not in bloom, Peach have shed their blossoms in part. Foward Cherries now in blossom white as are some but not all Apple trees. Some Strawberries in bloom. Poplars green & some other trees but some have not budded at the mountainsCapt Tho's Parker called here and said he had received part of a sum of money due from Jno' Shropshire to his father, and that Shropshire had promised to meet him here to pay balance of the money w'ch was due on Replevy bond. Shropshire came & paid off all but 37 / 6 1/2 Parker took his note for 20/- & acquitted him of the remainder. Capt Parker having received Silver Requested to exchange for Gold & I exchanged 2 doubloons & 1/4 Johannes for 34 dollars. 24, Mr. Ingram called to inform me that he had been to look for Timber at Jos.Bickers's and could not find any proper for the purpose. requested him to go again and search the land of Madeiras, he did so, but could not find any will do. I am at a loss to know what my father will do to procure shingles, but must make enquiry at the Election. 25, John Pendleton & his wife came from Culpeper. Col'o Pendleton came with them. The weather has been cloudy & rained every day since the 19th Cha's Taylor who was to have been up from Caroline the 22nd, is not yet got home.-Saw young Blue birds this day-The Spring begins to show by the trees looking green on the mountains. Capt.Burnley came here in the Evening and asked me to write a deed from his father to him for the Land he lives on hich is half the tract not yet divided sold by C.&R.Payne to Z.Burnley.
