[40] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 April 26, Wrote a deed of Gift from Zach Burnley to Garland Burnley-shall not charge anything for doing it. Col'o Pendleton & Bro'r James went to Col'o Madisons-Went to Ch's Taylors. He & his family just got down from Capt.Conways-my father & Geo.C.Taylor & the Doct'r from Caroline- Had bowl of Punch and some good fish27, Went to election. James Madison had 225, C.Porter 187 & Jas Gordon 105 votes. I paid C.Porter jurr £4.10. for w'ch he gave his bond to deliver 1500 feet scantling for my fathers house- Pd.F.Cowherd 8/9 w'ch he won of me at Col.Burnleys. Paid A.Holmes 24/- on Taylor acco't. Went to Col'o Madisons in the evening with my father. Let C.Conway have two Int Warrants for 1.19.5. & 2.11.2. am't £4.10.7-Gave W.Finnell & B.Porter notice that my father would motion against them at next Court if they don't pay their repleyy bond before that time. 28 My father & self remained at Col Madisons and adjusted the accounts of their Trustee business to H.Beverley dec'd. Very dull and somewhat more unwell than usual29, Oliver Towles & Charles Porter, two of the Com'rs appointed by Act of Assembly to settle the acco'ts of Beverleys Trustees, met at the Court House and passed G. Taylors & J.Madisons accounts, but did not fix the sum to be paid the Trustees for their trouble. Mr.R.G.Beverley was there and Col'o Madison having in his hands above two thousand pounds paper rec'd for Lands on the Trust-he told me that Mr.Beverley sold it to him for 1/500 part in Cash. Mr. Gordon, J.Willis, G.Stubblefield, Col.Burnley and several other persons were there, Stubblefield seemed to have much to say to Beverley- At my return to bro'r James's found John & Robert Taylor & understood that Wins Parker, Capt Burnley, E.Taylor & family's had dined here. Will Madison went to Culpeper to Housekeeping this day. Reuben Taylor went to Housekeeping on the place he bought of H.Taliaferro the 22nd instant. Reuben went to Culpeper for money due him, called on his return & said he rec'd none. 30, Weather rather cool, remained at home. My health somewhat mending. May, 1, Had some hills made for melon patch. Went to Mrs.Thomas's with bro'r James's family-Col.Barbour & wife there. Mr.J.Thomas complained of having no appetite. I think he drank too much was all. Bro'r James planting Corn towards Mrs.Thomas's. The weather warm and dry. Rob't Taylors wife came to bro'r James's and stayed till the morning. 2, She went with Aunt Taylors to C.Taylors. My father came from C.Taylors after C.Ddinner. Cha's Dickenson (with A.Overton apprentice) came to work for my father 3, C.Dickenson began to underpin Kitchen with stone, having first levelled the house- I stayed with him till near 12 o'clock when I went to C.Taylors' Maj'r & Mrs.Moore dined there. 4, Sale at Mr.Terrills-I went to where Dickenson worked5, Col'o Barbour & family dined here and my father. 6, Went to Vestry- J.Taylor resigned, being Clerk - F.Taylor [the diarist himself] chosen. W.Moore & T.Barber [Barbour] Deputed to attend Convention of Clergy & Laity. 7, Mr Waddill preached at Brick Church. I have been since yesterday morning unwell than common- Charles Taylor's slave Jenny died this day after a few days sickness8, Dry smoky weather, continue unwell. Went over the road where Dickenson was at work. My father & Ch's Taylor came there- Went to Ch's Taylors Dined on fish. 9. Health better. Reuben Taylor & my father was where Dickenson was working. They came and dined at Bro'r James's. Bowie Pendleton got here afer dinner. Maj'r Madison & Capt.Burnley came in the evening-Majr. Madison said he saw T.Brown from Kentucky who told him the Indians were very troublesome-had killed a Schoolmaster at E.Taylors. [41]9 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 May 10, Planted Melon Seed. White speck'd seed from Col'o E. Pendleton's and Muskmelon from do & Cantaloupe round the patch. weather very dry. 11, Cloudy and rain. My father came from C.Taylor's-had some limes which Jos.Clark brought up from Fred'g yesterday-he had been with Tobacco-says the price is low, 18/ to 20/- My father dined here. 12, Warm and some clouds without rain. Went over the road. My father , C.Taylor, J.Pendleton & Bowie Pendleton there, went to the Doctors to dinner & ret'd in the evening-Mr. P.Pendleton at bro'r James's. 13, Cloudy and little rain in morning. Mr.P.Pendleton went early away. Saw some red strawberries. Some apple and Quince trees have not shed their blossoms yet. 14, My father went to H.Taylor's & engaged his waggon to draw Timber etc. 15, Laid off the ground my father's house is intended to be built upon. John & Bowie Pendleton went to Culp'r Court in Company with Robert Taylor-Thunder & a good shower of rain. 16, Began to dig my father's cellar. Hubbard Taylor's Waggon began to draw in Timbers from Bigger's-1 day. 17, Continued to work on Cellar. H.T's Waggon 2d, day.J.Pendleton ret'd from Culp'r. 18, Work on Cellar. H.T's Waggon 3rd day. 19, My father went to Col'o Madisons & returned to Bro'r James's. H.T's Waggon 4th day. Horse shod at Mr.Shepherds. 20, My father & bro'r James's went to Maj'r Moores. H.T's Waggon not here to-day. Mrs. James dined at bro'r James's. I walked in evening to Mr.Ingram's old Cherry orchard-some cherries red. Went from there with J.Pendleton to Mrs. Thomas's. Mr.B.Porter called there & told me he had been at Bro'r James's & settled with my father for Finnels Ex'on & paid to about 40/-which he will pay at Court. 21, My father called at bro'r James's & left £20.10 with me towards paying for work on his house. He went to Hubbard Taylor's. Cooper with five of Mr.P.Pendleton's sons got to bro'r James four of them goes to live in Culpeper. 22, H.Taylor's Waggon 5th day at work.Mr.Dickenson finished Chimney to the Kitchen. 23, Laid the Kitchen floor with brick. H.T's Waggon 6th day. 24, Mr. Dickenson began the Cellar wall. H.Taylor's Waggon 7th day. The weather has been cloudy & moderate showers from the beginning of last week. 25, Very rainy wet day which prevented my going to Court. Bro'r James went. No Magistrate but Mr.Shepherd who adj'd Court. 26, Still cloudy & rainy. Court adj'd again. I replanted Melon patch. 27, Cont'd rainy till about noon. Five Justices having met at Court they made some orders and adjourned to Court in course. rained in evening. I did not go to Court. 28, Very rainy morning. Cleared about noon. The weather for two weeks has been cloudy & the last week rained much. J.Pendleton & wife & Mary Taylor went after dinner to Maj'r Madison's-My father to Cha Taylors. C.Dickinson has not been able to work for the rain since Wednesday the 24th. 29, Rainy weather. 30 & 31, Rainy warm weather. [42] 10 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR. 1786 June 1, Chas. Porter & sons of Mr. Ingram's and his apprentices came to work but the weather so wet, could do very little. 2, (No entry June 2, S.H.A.) 3, Went with my father to Uncle E.Taylor's. The weather cleared about noon. Maj;r.F.Taylor was there. Capt. Burnley & the family, C.Taylor & Hd.Taylor. Mr.Wayte came up with a stage waggon for Miss Gilberts to go to the races. Mr.P.Pendleton got to J.Taylors from Caro'la. 4, Warm and hazy-did not rain this day. It has rained (except one day) for more than twenty days last past. My father came in the evening. 5, Paid Mr.Wm.Igram £30. do, B.Porter 2/5--My father & bro'r James set out early for the races which commences at Fred'g tomorrow. Mr.P.Pendleton & son set off to Culpeper. I went with family to Mrs. Thomas's Col.Barbour & family-Ben & Abner Porter &c. there. Mr.B. Porter informed me the money I let Mr.Ingram have was short weight 2/6. F.Cowherd left 12 half-Joes & 4 Dollars with me for Ja's Taylor. 6, Went to Court house where I had been desired to meet Col'o Burnley & others but he did not come himself- bo't 1000 small nails of J.Lee. Paid 2/6 to Mr. Shepherd for a pr.Shoes put on my horse the 19th ult'o. Bowie Pendleton came to Co't house to Mrs.Lewis' Dance. Mrs Gaines & daughter came yester evening from Dance & stayed to go again. 7, Walked to Collina. Messrs Ingram & Porter, two or three apprentices and two Sawyers came yesterday to work. Ch's Dickinson at work on the stone wall. Capt. Burnley & J.Pendleton there-Negro George who went rolling Monday got home about two o'clock. Says the horse K.Herod won race at Fred'g yesterday. H.R.) Hosea Robinson came in the evening to work with Ch's Dickenson. Ja's Gaines &c went home from J.T's at night. 8H.Taylor's waggon at work 8th day. Capt Burnley & Doct'r Taylor at Collina-Brisk wind & shower of rain. Bro'r James returned from Fredericksburg-I delivered him the money F. Cowherd left for him. 9, H.Taylor's waggon at work, 9th day. C.Dickenson got the stone-work ab't cellar wall nearly finished10, C.Dickinson about brick under-pinning. Col.Burnley with Mr.T.Bell came to Callina, the former wanted to see me about the number of men who were raised for the Reg't Guards. Maj'r F.Taylor & bro'r James were at the building, I came over with them, while we were at dinner Colonels Madison & W.Madison got to J.Taylor's. Rob't Taylor & wife & Col.Barbour after dinner. C.G.Cock came to the Clerk to get the Seal of the County affixed to power of Attorny to send to England, About a Legacy left him. H.Taylor's Waggon at work 10th, day- the Last Stock & one load Shingles brought from Bicker's. 11, Went to C.Taylors. Reuben Taylor & wife & Maj'r F.Taylor dined there. R.T. said we'd return as much plank next week as he borrowed of my father. C.Taylor gave me a letter from bro'r Jonathan to my father wc'h we opened. 12, Went to Capt. Burnleys- Bro'r James, J. & Bowie Pendleton, Hd.& F.Taylor. Mrs Burnley &c. dined there. H.Taylor's waggon bro't a load Shingles opposite Capt.Burnleys & unloaded, one of the wheels giving away. H.Pendleton ju'r got here on his way from Carolina. 13, Dined at H.Taylors in Company with Mr.Pendletons; John, Bowwie & Henry, bro'rs James, Charles & Reuben, the latters wife & Miss Moore & Maj'r F.Taylor. Maj'r Taylor told me he offered to sell a Negro woman & 3 children to Capt. Burnley for £120. & would take his Certificates 3 1/2 for 1. they did not bargain & Maj'r Taylor intends to set off home tomorrow. Mr.P.Pendleton with his son Joseph got to bro'r James's from Culpeper. 14. Mr.P.Pendleton stayed this day. Henry & Bowie also. Excessive hot weather. J.Clark sheared sheep yesterday. J.T. today. [43] 11 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 June 15, Mr. Pendleton set off toward Carolina. I went to Collina about the partition Cellar wall. Very hot. J.Taylor went to hire a Waggon to bring Sand, Bricke, &c., Mrs James here, Negro Winney miscarried. Ch's Porter jur. had brought for my father, 50 studs 4 by 3 inches 10 feet long 291, 2/3 Feet 60 do do 8 do 280 571, 2/3 16 Dickinson finished partition Cellar Walls, about filling in Chimney & Cellar steps. Sawyers went away- Mr. W.Ingram gave his bond to Stephen Rice for £3.13.6 for sawing Framing & c. Weather warm- some clouds- Little shower (17) in evening. H. Robinson came soon in morning to work for J.Taylor- Mr. Dickinson finished to the upper part underpinning building. This day being appointed to hold a Vestry at Court house, I went but only four Vestrymen were there, T.Jones' Waggon & brother James's Cart drawing Bricks &c. Little rain. 18, Went to Church, heard Mr. Waddill preach I was not well and could not attend as well as I would to his discourse. little shower of rain in evening. 19, Little shower in morning. Mr. Dickinson his apprentices & Robinson working for J.Taylor, finished oven & began Chimney to Office. Maj'r Moore, Reu. Taylor & families and Mrs. W. Madison dined at J.T's & Hd. Taylor. the latters Waggon drawing shingles & took 300 Bricks- Replanted Melon Patch- Mothershedd cut his leg. 20, Walked to the store. a Bar'l 20 d. Nails at Mr. Shepherd's bro't from Fred'g in his waggon & to bro'r James in his Cart for G.T. Dined at Mr.E.Taylors- W.Madison & wife & Miss Polly Moore there- Cousin Jn Taylor unwell, had return of ague. & fever last week- Reuben Taylor sent some Fred'g plank (for some he borrowed) of a bad quality. 21, Rainy before day. Sent Bar'l Nails to Collina, 12M 20d. saw young cucumbers. 22, Went to Court- Recd 2 Guneas of A.Madison toward discharging his bond to my father £2.16.0. Paid Cha's Porter ju'r £2.20. in part for 3000 feet feather edge plank to be del'd at the Mill at 42/Pr M. Paid Jos.Bickers 18/- in part for Timber had from him, to this date £3.6.0. he has had 2 1/2 Bar'ls Corn & is to have 1/2 Bar'l more to Ballance his acc'tin full. Col'o James Madison told me he intended to set off towards the Northern States on Monday next. I gave him 2 Cont'l Loan Office Cert'e to dispose of at Phil'a. Rec'd Patent for 3000 acres Land on Blackfords Creek. 23, Heard that Negro Frank was bit by a snake last night on his way to Jos. Clark's and went to Chas.Taylor. I went to see him, he was not bit on the ancle, his foot and leg much swelled and said he could not walk. Applications of salt & dough & weed were made. I staid till evening hen he said he was easier & could walk tho' still swelled. Ch's Porter sent to Collina 32 studs 10 feet long, 186, 2/3 feet. 24, I paid C.Dickenson in part for work done for G.T. £4.0.0. Robinson & Overton went away in morning & C.D. finished his work at J.Taylors. Bay Colt had paled himself badly lastnight. Ch Taylor, J;Pendleton & the boys went fishing, only a few caught. Melon seed planted 19th came up. Cn Porter sent 15 rafters 4 by 3 inch 18 1/2 feet long 161, 7/8 feet. Mr. H. Pendleton of S.Carolina came in the even'g. Wm.Haynes called and took a letter for Jon'a Taylor25, James Taylor went with Mr. H. Pendleton to Col Madisons. I wrote to Col Madison about C.L.O. Cert'cs a pr.button and my claim for half-pay- Mr. Pendleton is on his way to Sweet Springs- John Pendleton & the women went to Ja's Gaines's. Frank returned from C. Taylors much mended. the bite only sore place not much swelled.

[44] 12 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1786 June, 26, H.Taylor sent for some bricks and lime. Sent 100 Bricks, some Bats & about 2 Bus-Lime. Ch's Porter sent 15 Rafters--161, 7/8 feet. Let W.Ingram have 5/- to buy rum ab't raising O.T's house put on. 27, My fathers House raised. the Joiners with Joseph, Ambrose & Geo.Clark & Jno.Pendleton were the raisers. Saw Capt Dade, promised to fish at his Mill next Saturday-Heard that J.P.Adams's property was attacked by Chew & other Creditors. Maj'r Cowherd called at J.Taylors and staid all night. 28, Went down the run & cut some canes, came by Collina. Capt. Burnley there and wanted corn for the Timber, 2 or 3 trees had from him for shingles, told him to apply to Jos.Clark for 2 bus-Corn which he said would satisfy him. G.C.Taylor got to C.Taylor's from Caroline. 29, Went to Cha's Taylors, he is unwell. I dined there-on my return found Uncle & Aunt Taylor, Miss Jane & Miss E. Gilbert at J.Taylors30, Went to the stores at Co't house. Mr. Shepherd setting off to Fred'g with his son William who intends to Scotland. bought sundries at Lees store- found Geo Catlett at J.Taylors at my return- C.Taylor sent for and came to dinner he is getting better. July 1, Geo Catlett proceeded to Sweet Springs. Went with the Males of J.Taylors Family to Capt Dades Mill to Fish. Mess'rs H.Taliaferro, F. & Townsend Dades, Capt Burnley, C.Taylor, Mr.Blackhouse, G.C.Taylor & small boys in Company. Dined on cold Bacon, Fried Fish &c with sufficiency of grog, agreeably. All but J.Taylor, his son, & R.Pendleton spent evening at Capt Dades- Mr. Robert Green (son of Col.John) at J.Taylors. Cut Wheat at Jos.Clarks2, J. Pendleton, Mary & Jas Taylor ith Mr. Green went to Bledsoes meeting. [Note - by P.F.T.- "Bledsoe" was evidently Rev.Joseph Bledsoe, a Baptist Preacher of Culpeper Co., father of Judge Jesse Blodsoe U.S.Senator from Ky. see Collin's Hist. Ky. p.80, et al] 3. Jas Taylor cut his wheat. Crops of wheat are generally sorry. Weather very dry. Northern Lights have appeared for last three nights, a little rain at night. John Taylor & to eldest Miss Gilberts got home from Fred'g, they came in Maj'r Moores Charriot. Dancing School. J.Pendleton went in evening. 4, Walked over to Collina. Ch's Porter told me the plank he agreed to furnish is not yet ready. Went to C.Taylors, he & family gone to dancing. His wheat out to day- Very hot. Saw a young Melon. 5. Not well, took Salts, better in evening. a little rain. 6, Went to Vestry at Court house, all the Members but Johny Scott & A.Shepherd, Gont, present. I dined at Alcocks and had plenty of punch. G.Shepherd told me 2 Bar'ls Nails was brought up by his fathers Waggon for G.Taylor- Memo to send for them. Mr.H.Taylor promised to send his Waggon tomorrow with shingles & to bring plank from Mill. H.T., R.Taylor, their wives & Col'o Knnox dined at Alcocks on a visit. 7, H.Taylors Waggon bro't a load Shingles. Found him corn ret'd home in aftern'n-Rained a little refreshing shower. 8, H. Taylors Waggon came from home & went to C.Porters Sawmill, brought one load of plant & ret'd homeNote--found 2 bus Corn & 2 days provision for Abselom, think he did not more than a days work. Delightful rain. 9, Went to Church & heard Mr. Waddill preach an excellent Discourse. Went from Church to H.Taylors in company with Col'o Madison, his Lady & Miss Fanny & Cha's Taylors family. Very unwell in evening and all night. Violent headache & fever- Fine shower of rain at Chas Taylors & Jos Clarks, very little at bro'r James's.
