1799, November, 7, Smoky, warm, hazy and thin clouds. I slept very badly last night-very weak to day Patrick Bell was here early, wanted help to move C. Taylor's kitchen- Malachi Atkins & Essex went with him, they got it removed by 1 or 2 o'clock. I dined at home- Walked in evening to J. Taylor's, drank some unworked cyder-which seemed to give me some ease. Mrs Gaines (Pamunkey)- T. Crutchfield & wife, at J. Taylor's8, Friday, Began to Rain by sunrise & continued constantly all day- moderate- smoky- a good deal of water fell. J. Taylor sent me a jug of New Cyder- I sent back by his boy a Basket grapes. Had the Corn remaining in New house taken out & put into 2 Hhds, one of them ont quite full. Wm Collins-(C. Conway's overseer) Called here in morning with his 2 Waggons (drove by his sons) He brought the things F.S. Taylor sent to Mr.Blair's, vizt- A key 9 Gal's Molasses, 1 Keg 9 Gallons Rum & a Box 100 lb Havanna Sugar- Also a Sack Salt C. Taylor got at Fred'g for me- I paid 6/- to W.Collins for bringing up the above articles- He left here for C. Taylor's- a Sack Salt- Bolt of Oznabrigs & a bundle Cloth &c. I drank a great deal of new Cyder, which appeared to purge and relieve my pain in the day. 9, Ceased raining before midnight- Fair smoky warm. I am more unwell than was yesterday- Slept but little last night. Measured 16 Hhds Corn & put into old house- Exclusive of 2 Hhds measured at Stack for Hogs. Reuben Taylor called here & dined- he had been to Goolsby's, part of whose goods are arrived. 10, Sunday, Fair, mild & smoky- a little hazy in evening. I was very ill last night and so to day- Took a dose Salts early- they did not work well: about 10 o'clock took Castor oil which purged- I am and have been much griped & cramped in my abdomen. Gibson & Nat Taylor came here after dinner to ask how I was- Brothers James & Carles walked here in evening. 11, Monday, Thin clouds,smoky and warm. Sent to McKinney's Mill 6 Bus Corn & got meal. Brother James came over early in morning to know how I was, he returned before breakfast. I was up often last night and a good deal purged, am very weak to day, but in less pain than yesterday- Had the Corn that was Shocked removed to Corn house, 22 Hhds measured to day. Reuben Taylor's girl brought me 2 Carps- I sent a set Knitting pins by her to her mistress. Mrs Burnley sent 2 pair Negroes Stockings by her girl, she is to have 4 pair more knit- for the 6 pair I sent 18 lb Wool- as was agreed by us- Capt Conway's son John had been to court house and returned by here, told me his father sent word, he thought my young Ox is in his pasture. J. Taylor was here a little in the evening. 12, Rained before day & this morn, cleared towards night- smoky. Finished Shocking Corn from Barn field. I was very unwell all day. C.P. Howard came here in evening & staid with me. 13, Ground frozen- Clear morn, broken clouds in evening. I took Laudanum Last night which relieved my pain, very drowsy. John Taylor rode here after breakfast to see me- C.P. Howard we away with him before noon. J. Gibson & Nat Taylor came to ask how I was. C. Taylor came over before noon- Gave me Acco't of Salt & medicine he bought at Fred'g 43/- & paid me 17/- the balance of money I sent by him- he went away by 12 o'clock, Measured the balance of Corn from Barn field: Brought to Old Corn house to day, 22) do the 9th, 16, & 11th 22 38) 64 Hhds, Barnfield. Left at Stack & red Hogs with 4) 14, Smoky mild-thin clouds afternoon. Killed a Wether. Joseph Clark was here this morning, said the road must be worked against Court- he braekfasted w'th me, told me Mrs Clark had wove the Cloth &c. I am not as well to day as yesterday J. Taylor was here a little time in evening. Began to gather Corn in middle field.

1799, November, 15, Mild smoky, I was very unwell last night & to day- grow very weak. Continue getting Corn. J. Taylor was here about an in evening 16, Smoky, weather remarkably mild for the season. Sent 6 Bus' Corn to McKinney's Mill & got meal in night. I feel easier than I did yesterday & walked to J. Taylor's, which fatigued me more then I expected- Mrs Gaines, T. Crutchfield wife dined there. Sent Old Peter to Capt Conway's to look for missing Ox, he told me next morning that the one he saw was not mine. 17, Sunday, Smoky warm weather continues. Sent 2 dollars by Frank to Joseph Clark's to pay for weaving 32 yards Plain woolen cloth- he brought home the cloth, and the Newspapers from Post office. C. Taylor came here to dinner- J. Taylor & T. Crutchfield here in evening- I continue very full of Pain & weak. 18, Cloudy morn & warm- Blustering afternoon with a dash of rain- turned cooler & clear at night. James Taylor walked here early to see me & ret'd to breakfast. I still continue very unwell. C. Taylor sent his son Charles with Jallap, pills &c. 19, Clear & cool morning, and colder evening. I continue in great pain. J. Taylor came in morn to see me & soon returned. C. Taylor came here and staid to dinner J. Taylor sent Jacob & got 2 Gammons, 25 lb Bacon. John Taylor came here after dinner & staid till sundown. 20, Ice ½ Inch thick. Great frost- fair & not very cold. J. Taylor came here early- I agreed (if well enough) to go with him to Goolsby's tomorrow- he ret'd soon. Macon Biggers, looking for Cattle, called & dined here. Finished gathering & drawing Corn to Shelter. 21, Thursday, Ice half inch thick & great white frost, Hazy cool morning, fair pleasant evening- a little smoky. Brother James came by his carriage, I went in it with him to Goolsby's Store- Where I bought sundry goods- which was brought (with some J. Taylor bought) in his carriage,which returned by my house in the evening- J. Taylor did not stop but went on home- I made a statement that 297½ Bushels Wheat,which had been delivered by me to Tarlton Goolsby's Waggoners ought to be full 287½ Bushels- to which quantity T. Goolsby signed an agreement to pay for by 1st March next at 10/- p/r bushel-deducting amount of Goods I may take by then. I was not so unwell (especially at night) as I have often been. 22, Slight frost- a little hazy & turned warm. M.Atkins- Rob't Jones & 2 negroes from J. Taylor's & here worked on the road. Joseph Clark's Edmund called here with the waggon and left an Iron Skillet and 2 Bus'Oysters (J.C. bought for me) Reuben Taylor called here and went to J. Taylor's, he got back by noon and went on home. I have felt easier than from several days past. 23, Saturday, Smoky warm and a little hazy. I slept but little last night, in pain all day. C. Taylor walked here & returned before dinner. Had 22 Hhds Corn measured ( from middle field) and put into New Corn House. Charles Bell rode here in evening to enquire if G.C. Taylor has a Bed here or at C. Taylor's. I believe none. Nat Taylor came to ask how I am.

BIRTHS, DEATHS & MARRIAGES. 1799, Jan. 8, Thomas Crutchfield married Anne Taylor, 24, Sary had a male child born, Feb. 5, Thomas Barbour (Madison) had a daughter born 16 June named Anna Maria Eliza 17, John Taylor's youngest child died. 16, Reuben Taylor had a son born- Benjamin. Alex'r Shepherd had a son born 17th January. Mar. 20, Hannah had a female child born, died 21st April. Mr. John Alcock's wife died about 10th inst. Maj'r Wm Taylor Kentucky had a daughter born Feb'y. Apr. Capt James Burton married Betsy Goodrich. F. S. Taylor had a daughter born 29 March, names Salley. May 30 Isaac Robertson married Matilda Taylor (R. T.'s daughter, Kentucky). George Turner Caroline died. Jul. Garrett Minor, Louisa, died 25th ulto. Mrs Anne Willis died late Spring (wife of Maj'r J. Willis, Spots'a). Richard Taylor had a son named Edmund born in June [June 6th- PFT]. Peter Fontaine, a son. Jonathan Taylor jr married [Mary WKA] Ashby, 3d July.

NOTES by DR. A. G. GRINNAN. 1799 Feb. 13, Dr Charles Taylor's house caught fire on the roof and it was burnt. Most of the furniture saved. Apr. 24, Election- Col. Jas Madison and Capt James Barbour were elected delegates, Upwards of 200 votes for Dawson for Congress & French Strother for Senator.
