33 Sept 6th 1859 Negroes Pleazy & Sarah; belonging to Jno W. Jones Continued Fever been treated for Typhoid by a country doctor; with calomel Pulv Doveri; quinine & Spts turpentine Pleazy very sick stupid hard to rouse; relapsing directly into stupor pulse 120 wiry skin harsh & dry tongue parched red, slick, encrusted with deposits teeth all crusted up mouth so sore & cracked that she can hardly open her mouth Bowels rather torpid has been much purged during her illness Sarah, the other negro sick with the same type of fever, but in consequence of the recentness of her case, & her not having been under bad treatment so long; she is not near so sick She has much stockier frame than the other too Pleazy aged about 14 or 15 Sarah about 17 or 18

34 I put them on the following

Pleazy Re Pil Hydrarg pulv grviii Pulv Ipecac griv Potass. sulph [Zi] Pulv Digitalis grv make 16 doses

Sarah Re hydrarg chlor. [mixt] grx Pulv Ipecac grviii Potass sulph 3i Pulv Doveri grxxxii Pulv Digitalis grviii Make 16 powders Give each patient one of their powders every 4 hours alternating with the use of Spts nitre and Boneset tea (3i to Zi) every 4 hours For Pleazy I presc. infus Boneset & Serpentan? with nitre Cropped Pleazy's hair (which was redundant) off as short as scissors could do it Keep cold wet cloths to it, & a Blister to mucha

35 The cases, especially Pleazy's improved steadily On Sept 7th, I modified the prescriptions as follows Pleazy P. Hydrarg grv P. Ipecac griv Potass sulph 3i P. Digitalis grv Make 16 powders Sarah P. Hydrarg grxvi P Ipecac grviii Potass. sulph. 3i P. Digitalis grviii Make 16 doses Give in same way, con tinuing the nitre & Boneset

On the 9th Pleazy was so im proved that I gave her powders (Sarahs also) only 3 times a day & alternated with Boneset and 3ss comp. tinct. cinchona; as her Bowels are slow, left a vial of Tarrant's Elixir Rhubarb to use On the 11th Left Pleazy on the following Re Rhei pulv grx quinine grxii soap grxii Pil Hydrarg grvi Make 18 pills

36 give one 3 times a day give Tinct. cinchonae comp 3ss, 3 times daily Use enemata when necessary Some days afterwards, on acct. of constipation I sent a comp. tr. Gentian, calumbo & Rhubarb The convalescence of both was highly satisfactory

[Oct 10] Mr Spooner's son James aet 26 months been subject to intermittent fever quartan type (has been relieved of this by the following emulsion Suitable proportion of ingredients for his age Re quinine grxxiv Pil Hydrarg grxx ol Pip nigr gttxx Sacch. alle. q.s. aa G. acac. qs aa Water [cinnamon alt] q.s. [uttft] 3iv Sp. Lavend Co 3ii a teaspoonful every 2 hours till 6 are taken on the 2 well days.

37 Oct 10 Has had fever for over 30 hours I saw him at 10 o'clock at night fever subsiding great irritation of bowels today Bilous actions; had taken 2 doses of the above mixt in the morning. I put him on the following Re Hydr chl.. mixt griii Pil Hydrarg (pulv0 grvi Pulv Doveri grvi quinine grviii Make 6 powders one every 4 hours till 3 are taken if fever does not return, give 2 or 3 grs quinine tomorrow If fever returns give the following Re P hydrarg (pulv) 2 grs Hydrarg chl. mixt 2grs P. Ipecac 2grs P. aromat q.s. Make 8 doses give one every 2 hours Keep Bowels open
