5] Mariana Miller read from the old minute book of the meetings at Mt. Pleasant, 1873, these being the last minutes by Margaret Farquhar - the new secretary being Anna Gilpin. As the ink was so faded these next minutes were omitted.

Jeanette Dales - a story of George Eliot.

Mary Robison read of the new Secretary of the Navy - Charles Francis Adams - a descendant of the illustrious Adams family noted in the early history of this country.

Hallie Bentley - a poem from McGuffey's fifth reader - which reader seems to have laid the foundation for good literary taste.

Committees

No reports from Education, American Home, or Social Service.

Resolutions - There was no copy of the resolutions as sent out by the County Federation - but the principles of four of them were acted upon -

1 - Requiring sanitary sewerage disposal - accepted

2- Display of Md. Flag by schools of county accepted

3 - Court House Clock - rejected -

4 - Newton Bill - accepted.

Legislation - The members were advised

7] to take advantage of the good work being done by the League of Women Voters.

Special Committee reported the lecture given by the Chinese girl had been very satisfactory.

County Federation – Delegated to attend the Annual Meeting were appointed – Mary B Brooke – Estelle Moore – Helen Farquhar – They to select their own alternates.

State Federation – no report – Delegates did not attend the Annual meeting.

New Business – The report from the Community Council was accepted – A commercial course at Sherwood was approved – Also an agricultural course if it can be a good one – preferably under the Smith Hughes Act.

Sallie Janney reported that she had visited Emily Massey and Sadie Adams and advised others to do likewise. Meeting adjourned – Margaret Elgar Sherman jones – Sec’y.

1] Mt. Airy 6-6-1929 860th meeting

After the usual luncheon the Mutual Improvement Association was called to order by Miss Elise Hutton – 6-6-1929 – at Mt Airy the beautiful home of Rebecca Miller.

The minutes of the last meeting at this place were read – and the minutes of the last meeting read and approved.

The Treasurer Mary Tilton reported:

On hand from last report 22.15 Dues paid 5.00 On hand June 1 – 27.15 On hand for Social Service League 9.50 The report was accepted.

Next meeting – with Fanny Iddings to luncheon at 12:30 -

Mary Green, who had just attended the American Library Association Conference where she met people from all over the U.S. – told that we must get popular opinion in favor of a County Library if we would have such a Library here in Montgomery County.

Anna Farquhar – a story, showing the folly of idle gossip.

Rose Gilpin – remarked on the beauty of the Silver Moon climbing rose and asked what to do with a very cross English Mocking Bird. No advice
