The Cedars – 5-2-1929 859th meeting.

The 859th meeting was held at The Cedars – the attractive home of the Misses Hutton, 5-2-1929 – luncheon being served at 12:30. The meeting was called to order by Rebecca Miller.

The minutes of the last meeting at this place were read for information – and those of the last meeting read and accepted.

The Treasurer reported – On hand April 1 – 29.40 Dues paid 3.75 33.15

Chinese Girl lecture 6.00 Travellers Aid dues 5.00 11.00 May 1 – To bal. on hand 22.15 For the Social Service League 4.50 The report was accepted as read.

No man, no matter what his vocation can attain generous success without making sacrifices. Nothing worthwhile can be got anywhere for nothing. Things we get for nothing we do not enjoy. Work and labor and study and sacrifice are all necessary to winning the kind of success that brings satisfaction with it.

Elise Hutton – read from Harpers about How to make household scenes – scenes which all may appreciate. Question – Where to get some boards? Mr. Ervin can supply them.

Elizabeth Stabler asked where she could buy home-made lard.

Charlotte Farquhar asked when is the best time to move lilacs - anytime.

Edith Hallowell and Nan Riggs no selections.

Ollie Myers told of a little girl who said she would get married if she was pretty - she would be a doctor if she had brains - but if she had neither beauty nor brains she would be a missionary.

Julia Hallowells verse "A Noble Nature" was followed by offering to give away ever-bearing raspberries to any who want them.

Alice Tysons selection (read by Margaret Moore) was a poem written by Edward Farquhar in 1862.

Margaret Moore – some jokes.

Alice Farquhar – some extracts from the life of Count Leo Tolstoy.

Estelle Moore – an article on the starling from the London Times – showing that this bird is better liked in England than in American.

Questions – Would sheep-manure be beneficial to asparagus? – Should asparagus be planted 18 inches deep? No definite answers to either question.
