NEW ORDINANCES [handwritten 45?] 45 AN ORDINANCE Regulating the [torn] of Streets and Sidewalks in the [torn] City of Greenville. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in council assembled, and by the authority of the same:

Section 1. That from and after the passage of this ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to place in any of the streets, sidewalks or public alleys of the City of Greenville any empty boxes, empty casks, wagons, carriages, carts, buggies, vehicles of any description or obstruction of any kind without the permission of the Maypr of said city and the permission the owner or owners of the property abutting on the street, sidewalk or public alley in front of whose property the said obstruction is sought to be placed.

Sec. 2. Be it further ordained that from and after the passage of this ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to drive a dray, wagon, cart or other vehicle of like character through the streets faster than a walk.

Sec. 3. It shall also be unlawful for any person or persons within the incorporate limits of the city of Greenville to run a horse or horses, mule or other animal in the streets or public ways or public ways of said city; or ride or drive in a disorderly manner; or drive, ride, or place any horse, mule or other animal, or any kind of wagon, carriage, buggy or other vehicle on any sidewalk or on any street which intersects any side or other walk.

Sec. 4. That from and after the passage of this ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to throw or deposit any firewood, shavings, brick-bats, broken or empty bottles or any refuse matter of any kind whatsoever in the streets, sidewalks, public alleys or other public places within the city of Greenville without s pecial permission from the Mayor of said city.

Sec. 5. Be it further ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the city of Greenville, in council assembled, and by the authority of the same, that from and after the passage of this ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to allow their slops or waste water of any kind to run or flow on, over or in front of the lot , lots, or property of another or others without the permission in writing of the owner or owners of said lot, lots or property.

][column 2, top of right side of page] Sec. 6. All ordinances or parts of ordinances inconsistent with this ordinance be, and the same are hereby repealed.

Sec. 7. Any person or persons violating the provisions of this ordinance or either or any of them shall be subject to a fine, upon conviction by the Mayor or acting Mayor, not exceeding Twenty-five Dollars or imprisonment not exceeding Thirty Days for each day such violation shall be had.

Done and ratified in Council assembled, this the 7th day of October, A. D., 1896.

AN ORDINANCE providing for the Working of the Prisoners of the City of Greenville upon the streets of said city.

Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in council assembled, and by the authority of the same:

Section 1. That from and after the passage of this ordinance it shall be lawful, and the Mayor or acting Mayor of the city of Greenville, is hereby authorized and empowered, in his discretion, to sentence all prisoners convicted by him, to work upon the streets, public ways or places of the city of Greenville in the city chain gang for the number of days the said prisoner or prisoners are sentenced to be confined.

Sec. 2. All ordinances or parts of ordinances inconsistent with this ordinance be, and the same are hereby repealed.

Done and ratifed in Councile assembled this 6th day of October A.D., 1896

The following named are some of the gentlemen who held the office of Intendant of the Town of Greenville from its incorporation to the time the Charter of the Town was changed making Greenville a City : (*)

During the session of the Legislature in 1868 and 1869 the Charter of the Town was amended, making the Town of Greenville a city. The following named gentlemen have held the office of Mayor since that time :
