vided [provided] further, That the Mayor be authorized and required to withhold any installments of the City subscription if, from any cause, the work of grading be discontinued.

Sec. 3. The bonds authorized by the Ordinance shall be exempt from all taxation of either principal or interest by the City, and shall be payable, as follows: On 1st January, 1880, $7,5000; on 1st January, 1883, $7,5000; on 1st January, 1886, $15,000; on 1st January, 1889, $15,000; on 1st January [,] 1892, $15,000; on 1st January, 1895, $15,000.

Sec. 4. That the bonds shall be of the denomination as follows, viz: Two hundred and fifty bonds of one hundred dollars each, and one hundred bonds of five hundred dollars, all to be signed by the Mayor and Clerk and Treasurer of the City, and sealed with the seal of the Council. The interest on the same shall be paid semi-annually, in the City of New York, or in Greenville, at the option of the holders of the bonds; and the coupons shall be receivable at par for taxes and all other dues to the City of Greenville, and it shall be so expressed on their face.

Sec. 5. That after the lapse of five years from the first issue of the bonds the City Council shall levy annually a tax of fifteen hundred dollars, which shall be used as a sinking fund, to retire the bonds as they mature; the said fund shall be invested first in the bonds authorized by this Ordinance, if the same can be purchased at not exceeding their par value, or secured in some first-class security, and held for the purpose of retiring the bonds.

Sec. 6. The stock issued by the Air-Line Railway Company in exchange for the bonds of the City Council shall be placed in the hands of Thomas M. Cox, Alexander McBee and S. Swandale, in trust, for the exclusive benefit of the holders of the bonds, authorized under the provisions of this Ordinance, and the holders of the bonds may, at any time before their maturity, demand in ex-[change]

change for the same an amount of stock equal to the amount of bonds presented: That is to say, One hundred dollars of stock of the Air-Line Railway Company at par for one hundred dollars in City bonds at par; and the Trustees aforesaid shall be authorized and required to make the exchange, and shall cancel the bonds surrendered, and deliver them to the City Clerk and Treasurer. The City Council pledge the faith and funds of the City for the payment of all bonds remaining, and which may not be surrendered in exchange for stock, as provided in this section. And, further, Should any vacancy occur in the Board of Trustees, they are hereby authorized to fill such vacancy.

Sec. 7. That all Ordinances and parts of Ordinances heretofore passed by the City Council inconsistent with the provisions of this Ordinance be, and the same are hereby, repealed.

AN ORDINANCE to Alter and Amend an Ordinance Entitled "An Ordinance to Provide for a Subscription to the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway Company, and Amend an Ordinance on the Same Subject, Dated the 20th Day of May, 1870," and Dated the 27th Day of January, 1871.

Section 1. Be it ordained, That the second Section of the Ordinance, dated January the 27th, 1871, be so amended that the Mayor shall be authorized, and he is hereby empowered and instructed, to issue immediately of the bonds of the City, prepared for that purpose, bonds to the amount of sixty-six thousand, five hundred dollars computed at seventy-five cents on the dollar, in exchange for fifty thousand dollars of the capital

stock of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway Company.

Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That one-half in amount of the bonds provided in Section first of this Ordinance to be issued, shall bear interest at the rate of seven per centum per annum, from the first day of July next, and that the remaining one-half of said bonds shall bear interest at the same rate from the first day of January, A. D. 1872.

Sec. 3. Be it further ordained, That the balance on the subscription aforesaid, amounting to one hundred and twenty-five dollars, which shall remain unpaid when the bonds aforesaid shall have been issued and delivered, as hereinbefore provided for, shall be paid in cash from any funds which may be in the hands of the City Treasurer.

Sec. 4. All Ordinances and parts of Ordinances inconsistent with the provisions of this Ordinance be, and the same are hereby, repealed.

AN ORDINANCE in Reference to the Air-Line Railway Company.

Be it enacted, by the City Council of Greenville, in Council assembled, and the authority of the same, That the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway Company be authorized to cross, with their track, the following Streets in said city, to-wit: Pendleton Street, opposite the Greenville and Columbia Depot; Rhett Street, in rear of lot belonging to Wm. AN ORDINANCE AGAINST THE INTERFERENCE WITH THE TOWN MARSHALS.

Section 1. Be it ordained by the Town Council of Greenville, That any person or persons who shall in any manner abuse or interfere with any of the Town Marshals, or any other officers of the Town, in the discharge of their duties, by word or acts, shall, for each and every offence, pay a fine of not more than fifty dollars, and any person or persons aiding or abetting in such abuse or interference shall be fined in a sum not exceeding twenty-five dollars.

AN ORDINANCE CONCERNING NUISANCES. Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, That every person in whose possession any horse, mule, cow, dog, hog, sheep or goat shall die, within the limits of this City, shall immediately upon the death of such animal cause the same to be removed without the limits of the City, or buried in some remote place not within three hundred yards of any habitation, in such manner as to prevent the same from being offensive: and any person neglecting to remove or bury such dead animal

within six hours after its death, shall be subject to a penalty of three dollars for each and every offence.

Sec. 2. And be it further ordained, That if any person shall permit any such dead animal to remain unburied or unremoved from the limits of the City longer than six hours, the Chief of Police, or any one of his assistants, shall cause the same to be removed or buried at the expense of such person.

Sec. 3. And be it further ordained, That it shall not be lawful for any person, or persons, to throw or put into the Reedy River, streams or ponds within the City limits, any filth, trash, or dead animal, under a penalty of ten dollars for each and every offence.

Sec. 4. Be it further ordained, That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after the ratification thereof.

AN ORDINANCE Relating to the Board of Health, Birth, Burials, Etc.

Section 3. Be it ordained, That every physician or midwife, or other person, who may professionally assist or advise at any birth within the corporate limits of the City of Greenville, shall make and keep a registry of such birth, and therein enter the time and place of such birth, and the color and sex of every child born, and the names, color, occupation and residence of each of the parents, so far as such facts can be ascertained; and every clergyman, trial justice, or other person, who may perform the marriage ceremony within the said corporate limits shall make and keep a registry of the marriage celebrated, and therein enter the full names of the parties married, the time and place of such mar- [marriage]
