Sec. 6. Be it further ordained, That shall any person or persons release or take away without proper authority any such cow, goat or swine impounded, said person or persons shall be liable to a fine at the discretion of the Council.

Done and ratified in Council assembled under the Corporate Seal of the City of Greenville on the thirty-first [in margin] (L.S.) day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-five.

AN ORDINANCE in Reference to Cattle Running at Large or Being Staked or Tied, or Held to Graze on the Streets or Sidewalks within the Incorporate Limits of the City of Greenville.

Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, and by the authority of the same, That on and after the p assage of this ordinance, it shall not be lawful for any person or persons to suffer or allow any of his, her, or their cows, horses, sheep, goats, swine, or cattle of any kind whatever, to go at large, or to be staked, tied, or held to graze on the streets or sidewalks within the corporate limits of the City of Greenville.

Sec. 2. That any person or persons violating any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be fined or imprisioned [imprisoned], or both, at the discretion of the Mayor.

Sec. 3. That all Ordinances and parts of Ordinances heretofore passed by the City Council inconsistent with the provisions of this Ordinance be, and the same are hereby, repealed.

32 Ordinances of the City of Greenville.

AN ORDINANCE Concerning Dogs.

SECTION 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, That on each and every dog kept by any person on his premises within the corporate limits there shall be paid a tax of one dollar and twenty-five cents to the City in each and every year; and any dog, or dogs, kept as aforesaid, shall be included in the tax return of the owner and keeper thereof, or the head of the family or keeper of the house where such dog is kept or harbored; and on payment of the said tax the owner or keeper of such dog, or dogs, shall be entitled to receive from the City Treasurer a license or badge for one year: Provided, A collar shall be constantly worn by such dog, having the badge or license attached thereto: And provided, also, That if at any time it shall be deemed unsafe to permit doys to go at large, it shall be the duty of the Mayor to issue proclamation forbidding the same; and any dog found going at large after such notice, and until such proclamation is revoked or expires by limitation, may be killed; and moreover the keeper or owner thereof shall be liable to a fine of two dollars, and any dog found going at large, or in any lot, contrary to this Ordinance, may be killed. Any person keeping a dog, contrary to this Ordinance, shall be liable to a fine of five dollars for every such offence; and for failure to make a return shall have the penalty added as in the case of other City taxes.

SEC. 2. And be it further ordained, That the following oath, in addition to the oaths now prescribed by law, shall be taken by all persons making a return to taxable property in the City, viz.: "I, A. B., do further swear that there is no dog kept by me, or on my premises," to which shall be added the following where a dog, or dogs, may have been returned, "except such as have been duly returned. So help me God."

SEC. 3. It is further ordained, That any dog brought into the City shall be immediately reported to the City

Treasurer, and the tax paid, and a license or badge taken out for the remainder of the year, under a penalty of two dollars on the owner or keeper of such dog, or the person on whose premises the dog may be found; and any dog at any time found in the City shall be deemed and taken to be kept therein and liable to the tax aforesaid, and it shall be the duty of the Chief of Police and his assistants to ascertain all such persons as have failed to make their returns as required herein.

Sec. 4. And be it further ordained, That nothing in this Ordinance contained shall be construed as applying to dogs of strangers passing through the City.

Sec. 5. And be it further ordained, That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after the 1st day of January, 1876. Done and ratified under the Corporate Seal of the said City of Greenville, on the twenty-second day of [in margin] (L.S.) AN ORDINANCE to Alter and Amend an Ordinence [Ordinance] Entitled "An Ordinance Concerning Dogs."

Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, That it shall be unlawful for any dog owned by a citizen of said City, running at large in the streets of the said City, unless such dog shall wear a collar with a badge or license attached thereto, which shall have been procured from the City Treasurer, as provided in an ordinance entitled, "An Ordinance Concerning Dogs," ratified 22d November, A.D. 1875.

Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That any dog so found running at large without such collar shall be impounded three days, and unless the owner shall claim and pay into the City Treasury of the City a fine of one dollar on the same, it shall be the duty of the Police to destroy said dog.

34 Ordinances of the City of Greenville.

SEC. 3. Be it further ordained, That so much of the Ordinance concerning dogs, above mentioned, as relates to dogs kept upon the premises of the owners of such dogs be and the same is hereby repealed; and that the money paid to the City Treasurer for licenses by such owners for dogs not running at large to be refunded to them.

SEC. 4. And be it further ordained, That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after the 9th day of April, 1876. Done and ratified under the Corporate Seal of the said City of Greenville, on the seventh day of April, in [in margin] (L.S.) the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-six. W. C. AN ORDINANCE TO SUPPRESS FARO BANKS AND GAMING TABLES WITHIN THE CITY OF GREENVILLE.

Be it ordained, by the Mayor and Aldermen of the city of Greenville, in Council assembled, That hereafter it shall not be lawful for any person or persons to open, set up, exhibit to be played at, or keep within his, her or their enclosure, within the City of Greenville, any gaming table commonly called A. B. C., or E. O., or any gaming table known or distinguished by any other letters or figures, or rolly polly table, or rouge et noir table, or any faro bank or other table or bank of the same or like kind, under any denomination whatever, or permit the game of pass dice to be played at, within his her or their enclosure. Any person or persons of fending against any provision of this section shall, upon conviction thereof, forfeit the sum of fifty dollars for each and every offence, and in default of the payment of the fine imposed, be compelled to work on the streets of the City under the direction of the Street Overseer, twenty days, and be held in the custody of the Police during the night time, until the term of the sentence shall expire.

Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That if any person or persons having a license to keep a billiard table within the City of Greenville shall permit any of the games mentioned in the foregoing Section, or any game similar thereto, or any other games of hazard, except that of billiards, to be played upon his, her or their billiard table, the persons so offending shall, upon conviction thereof, besides forfeiting the penalty aforesaid, forfeit his, her or their license.

Sec. 3. And be it further ordained, That if any retailer of liquor or tavern keeper within the City of Greenville, shall suffer or permit any of the aforesaid tables or games to be opened or played at in his, her or their enclosure, every such person shall, upon conviction thereof, besides the penalty aforesaid, forfeit his or her license, and be rendered incapable in future of obtaining a license for retailing spirituous liquors in this City.

Sec. 4. And be it further ordained, That one-half of any fine imposed and collected under this Ordinance shall be paid to the party informing of the violation of the same.

Sec. 5. Be it further ordained, That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after the ratification thereof.
