Oath Administered to Mayor and Aldermen of City of Greenville.
Do you solemnly swear that you are duly qualified according to the Constitution of the United States, and of this State, to exercise the duties of the office to which you have been elected, and that you will faithfully discharge, to the best of your abilities, the duties thereof; that you recognize the supremacy of the Constitution and laws of the United States over the Constitution and laws of any State, and that you will support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of South Carolina as ratified by the people on the 16th day of April, 1868.
"As Mayor of the City of Greenville, you will faithfully and impartially, to the best of your ability exercise and discharge the trust reposed in you, and will use your best endeavors to preserve the peace, and to carry into effect according to law the purpose for which you have been elected. So help you God."

ORDINANCES.
AN ORDINANCE Against Placing Obstructions in the Streets and Sidewalks, and for Other Purposes.
Section 1. Be it ordained, That no person shall place in any street, or any sidewalk, any empty boxes, empty casks, or other obstructions of any kind.
Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That no person shall drive a dray, wagon, or cart through the streets faster than a walk; nor shall run a horse or mule in the streets; nor ride in a disorderly manner; nor shall drive, ride or place any horse, mule or other animal, or any kind of carriage, on any sidewalk, or on any street, which intersects any side or other walk in such manner as to prevent the free passage of persons: Provided, always, That this Ordinance shall not prevent wagons or other carriages from loading or unloading at all places necessary.
Sec. 3. Be it further ordained, That no person shall deposit any fire-wood or shavings, brickbats, or other refuse of building material, in the streets, and permit the same to remain there for a longer period than one day to the annoyance of the public.
Sec. 4. And be it further ordained, That any person violating this Ordinance shall be fined on conviction not exceeding ten dollars for each day such obstruction shall exist.

AN ORDINANCE, in Relation to Chimneys and Stovepipes.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Intendant and Wardens of

the Town of Greenville, That any person who shall allow any soot or other combustible material to accumulate in any chimney or stove-pipe in the corporate limits of said Town, which shall, by taking fire, endanger the property of any person whatever, shall be fined for each and every offence the sum of five dollars.

AN ORDINANCE in Relation to Injuring Public Property.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Intendant and Wardens of the Town of Greenville, in Council assembled, That a fine of not less than ten, nor more than twenty, dollars shall be imposed upon each and every person convicted of injuring in any manner the bridges, wells, or other public property under the control of the Council.

AN ORDINANCE Prohibiting the Unnecessary Discharge of Fire-Arms.
Whereas, Many complaints have been made in regard to the indiscriminate discharge of fire-arms within the corporate limits of the Town: Therefore, be it ordained by the Intendant and Wardens of the Town of Greenville, in Council assembled, and by the authority of the same, That from and after the passage of this Ordinance, any person found guilty of discharging fire-arms

in the corporate limits of the Town of Greenville, unless in case of urgent necessity, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and be held liable to pay a fine of not less that two dollars for each offence; and in the event of any minor being convicted of such offence, the parents or guardian of said minor shall be held liable for the payment of the fine imposed.

AN ORDINANCE Amendatory of an Ordinance "to Prohibit the Use of Fire-Crackers, Rockets, or Fireworks of Any Kind Within Certain Limits."
Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, and by the authority of the same, That the Ordinance to prohibit the use of fire-crackers, rockets, or fire-works of any kind within certain limits, be amended so as to read as follows:
Section 1. That it shall not be lawful for any person to burn any fire-crackers, rockets or fire-works of any kind on Main Street, between the river and North Street, or within two blocks of Main Street, between the above limits; or on Buncombe Street, between Main and Richardson Streets; or on Pendleton Street, between the river and the Warehouse of Ferguson & Miller; or on Augusta Street, between Pendleton Street and the Passenger Depot; or in the vicinity of either of the Railroad Depots; or within two hundred yards of any cotton platform.
Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That all violations of the above Ordinance shall be punished by fine or imprisonment, at the discretion of the Mayor.

AN ORDINANCE to Provide for a Subscription to the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway Company, and to Alter and Amend an Ordinance on the Same Subject, Dated the Twentieth of May, A.D. 1870.
Section 1. Be it ordained, by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, and by authority of the same, That the Mayor be authorized to subscribe the sum of Fifty Thousand Dollars to the capital stock of the Atlanta & Richmond Air-Line Railway Company, in South Carolina, or any company with which it may consolidate, upon conditions following: (1st.) That said subscription shall be paid in coupon bonds of the City of Greenville, bearing interest at the rate of seven per centum per annum, payable at not less than sixty-six and two-third cents of their par value so that the issue of the bonds authorized under this Ordinance shall not exceed the sum of seventy-five thousand dollars ($75,000): And provided, (2d) That the said railroad be located through the incorporate limits of the City of Greenville.
Sec. 2. The subscription authorized by this Ordinance shall be paid as follows, viz: An installment of one-eighth (1/8) of the said subscription shall be delivered to the Air-Line Railway Company, upon satisfactory evidence being furnished to the City Council that the work of grading has been commenced between Spartanburg and the City of Greenville, and an additional installment of one-eighth every three months thereafter, as the work of grading progresses: Provided, That at least three miles of grading upon said road be completed between Spartanburg C. H. and Greenville C. H. for each installment paid and before the same is paid: And pro-[vided]
