riage [marriage], and the age, color, residence and condition of each. And it shall be the duty of any and every physician or surgeon practicing in the City to notify the Board of Health of the existence of any contagious disease coming within his knowledge. Furthermore, it shall be the duty of every person mentioned in this Section to present to the Chairman of the Board of Health a copy of such register signed by such person, or a written statement by him or her, signed, of all the facts required to be entered in such registers, within three days after the birth or marriage of any person to whom such registry may or should relate, or twenty-four hours after the knowledge of an existing contagious disease.

Sec. 4. It shall be the duty of the Chairman of the Board of Health to furnish proper blanks to the persons mentioned in the preceding Section for the better carrying out of the provisions thereof.

Sec. 5. That every person who shall omit to keep the registry required in Section 3, or who shall omit to report a written copy of the same to the Chairman of the Board of Health within three days after any birth or marriage, and twenty-four hours after the knowledge of any existing contagious disease, or shall wilfully make a false or fictitious entry in his record of births, marriages or contagious disease, or in the Copy delivered to the Chairman of the Board of Health, shall be subject for each and every such omission or false entry, to a fine of not more than fifty dollars, and on default of paying the same, shall suffer imprisonment not exceeding thirty days.

Sec. 6. It shall not be lawful for any person or persons, or bodies politic or corporate, to establish or use within the limits of the city any place or places for the burial of the dead, except such as are already established for that purpose; and should any person or body politic or corporate presume to establish such places for the purpose aforesaid, they shall for each such offence forfeit and

pay to the City the sum of fifty dollars for each day such place or places may be kept or used for such purpose, to be recovered in any Court having jurisdiction thereof.

Sec. 7. If any person or persons shall bury any dead in any burial ground or place within the limits of the City, except such as are already set apart for such purpose, such person or persons shall be liable for each such offence to a fine not exceeding fifty dollars and imprisonment not exceeding thirty days.

Sec. 8. It shall be the duty of the Chairman of the Board of Health to furnish each practicing physician of the City and the Coroner of Greenville County and Trial Justices of the City of Greenville, with blank certificates in the following form:

CERTIFICATE OF DEATH. 1. Full name of deceased. (If an infant not named, give parents' names.) 2. Age ____ years, months, days. Color. 3. Single, married, widow or widower. 4. Occupation. 5. Birthplace. (Country.) 6. How long a resident in the City. 7. Place of death ____ Ward and Street. 8. I do hereby certify that I attended deceased from ____ day of ____ 18 ____, to ____ day of ____ 18 ____; that I last saw ____ alive on the ____ day of ____ 18 ____, about ____ o'clock; and that the cause of death was ____. ________________ M. D. Sec. 9. When any person shall die in the City, the physician who shall have attended such person as physician or surgeon shall fill up the blanks in the foregoing Section to the best of his knowledge, and sign the same and deliver it to the Chairman of the Board of Health; and in case any person shall die in the City unattended by any physician or surgeon, it shall be the duty of the Coroner to furnish such certificate; and for each and every neglect of the duty herein required, each and every person offending shall forfeit and pay for the use of the City the sum of twenty-five dollars.

Sec. 10. No hearse-keeper or other person shall receive or carry any corpse or dead body until he shall have first been supplied with a certificate of the kind required to be furnished by the attending physician or Coroner in the preceding Section, and further obtain from the Chairman of the Board of Health or from the City Clerk a burial permit in the following form:

Burial Permit No. _____ Greenville, S.C., __________188___ Permission is hereby given to remove the remains of ____ Age ____ ; occupation ____; place of birth ____; place of death ____; date of death ____; to ___ for interment. __________________, Ch. Board Health.

And it shall be his or their duty to deliver the said certificate and burial permit, with the dead body, to the sexton or other person having charge of the burial ground in which it is proposed to bury such dead body, whenever such burial is within the limits of the City, under a penalty of twenty-five dollars for every failure or neglect so to do, and for any and every violation of the provisions of this Section.

Sec. 11. No sexton or other person having charge of any cemetery or other burial ground shall inter, or permit to be interred, any dead body therein, until he shall have first received from the person in charge of the body such certificate and burial permit as he is required by the Ordinance to deliver with such dead body; and it shall be the duty of such sexton or person in charge of the burial places to enter said certificate and burial permit in a book to be furnished to him for that purpose; and to deliver the original certificates and burial permits each day, as received, to the Chairman of the Board of Health or to the City Clerk; and for every violation hereof he shall be subject to a fine not exceeding fifty dollars.

AN ORDINANCE in Reference to Mayor's Court and Salary of Mayor.

Whereas, The recent Amendment to the Charter of the City of Greenville provides that the Mayor of said City may hold a Court for the trial of offenders against the City Ordinances.

Section 1. Therefore be in enacted by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, That from and after this date, it shall be the duty of the Mayor to hold a Mayor's Court as often as may be necessary for the trial of all offenders.

Sec. 2. That hereafter the Mayor of the City of Greenville shall receive for his annual salary the sum of nine hundred dollars, the same to be paid monthly by the City Treasurer.* Done in Council and ratified this sixteenth day of August, in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight [in margin] (L.S.) hundred and seventy-five, and in the one hundredth year of the independence of the United States of America.

AN ORDINANCE Concerning Cows, Goats and Swine.

Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen o f the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, That hereafter it shall not be lawful for cows, goats or swine to run at large within the corporate limits of the City of Greenville, and it shall be the duty of the Chief of Police and Assistant Policemen, and they are hereby authorized and required, to seize and secure cows, goats or swine that may be so found running at large, and to impound the same in an inclosure to be provided; and it shall be lawful for any person or persons residing in the City to seize any cows, goats or swine coming upon their premises, and deliver the same to a Policeman, to be impounded as provided for in this section.

SEC. 2. And be it further ordained, That upon the impounding of any such cow, goat or swine, the Chief of Police shall immediately advertise the same at the Guard House, giving a correct description thereof: and should the owner or owners appear within four days thereafter, and prove his or their right to the possession of such cow, goat or swine, then the said Chief of Police is authorized to deliver the same to him or them on the payment of one dollar and a half for each and every eow; one dollar for each and every swine; fifty cents for each and every goat, so delivered aS a fine hereby imposed for each and every cow, goat or swine so found running at large; Provided, That in the case of any cow, goat swine straying into the City from some place outside the corporate limits of the City should be taken up as aforesaid, the fine shall be only the pay. ment of expenses.

SEC. 3. Be it further ordained, That should no owner appear within the time herein before prescribed, or appearing, shall fail or refuse to pay the fine hereby imposed, then it shall be the duty of said Chief of Police to expose to public sale three days such cow, goat or swine, for the satisfaction of such fine; the excess of such sale, if any there be, after paying such fine and actual expenses incurred, to be deposited to the credit of the City Council, to be given to the owner of the property sold, upon the same being demanded within thirty days after such sale.

SEC. 4. Be it further ordained, That the preceding Sections of this ordinance shall not apply to cows remaining at large within the corporate limits of the City, between the first day of April and first day of November of each year.

SEC. 5. Be it further ordained, That this Ordinance shall take effect as to cows, on and after the first day of November, 1875; on and after the first day of October as to swine.
