From 1502 until 1527 , Gershom (alias Hieronymus) Soncino printed Latin, Italian, & Greek works in addition to Hebrew, at towns along the Adriatic coast : Fano, Pesaro, Ancora, Ortona, Rimini & Ceserro . At Fano he used an improved Italic fount cut specially for him by Francesco Griffo da Bologna. Altogether Soncino published over 100 non-Hebrew books, about as many as printed in Hebrew. Gerson - 1st of all the Jewish printers to undertake the publication of nonHebrew books. Was probably forced to do so by an apathetic Jewish patronage ; For the Jews were to poor to support the press. It is the brilliant success that crowned his non Hebrew work that explains the anomalous fact that a Jewish printer could maintain himself for 40 yrs. in the midst of an always hostile jealous & sometimes dangerous Christian envronment. Although Gerson printed all his Latin & Italian books in Fano under the name of Hieronymus Soncinus , he must have been known to be a Jew for he printed Hebrew books & lived as a Jew After the fall of Cesare Borgia, Giovanni Sforza, Lord of Pesaro reentered the city & shortly thereafter he married Ginevra, daughter of Marco Tiepole of Venice , a lady whom Jacopo da Bergamo in his book on the celebrated women of the Renaissance lands. This lady had been the patroness of G. Soncino when that wandering craftsman was in Venice just before his establishment at Fano. Gerson's 1st book at Fano was a collection of Latin authors, principally fathers of the church, and the new era began - the publication of the Cypian's "Cross of the Lord" Lactantius Resurrection of Christ" etc. For upwards of a year after the appearance of his 1st book at Fano , Gerson refrained from printing Hebrew. (of the 25 books printed, 1502 - 1506, 9 are in Hebrew) 1st Hebrew book at Fano - 1503 "Hoshaonot." His greatest book the Decachordum was published at Fano on Aug 10 1507 after he had removed to Pesaro. The Makers of Hebrew Books in Italy - David Amram (1963) Gunst 2155 A56
