Otto von Passau - teacher of a Franciscan order - wrote the 4 and 20 elders on the golden throne of the loving soul in Basd in 1386. It is a guide to Christian life, which leads to union with God. The 4 and 20 elders come from Revelation 4. Otto's book was clearly popular and went into a number of printed editions. - an anthology of Scripture and patristic and pagan thought grouped under 24 aspects of a Christian life, it stands in the earlier medieval tradition of the Sentences. The development in the genre marked by Die vierund-zwanig Alten was continued in such works as Nider's golden Hurfen which was modelled directly on Otto von Passau.

Munzinger, Rector of the school at Ulm, 1384? 5 full page woodcuts, one to each division of the book 1, 29, 40, 61, 68.

The Ara Morjendi, The Art of Dying was a popular subject in the late Middle Ages. It gives advice about the preporation for death, contemplations on the meaning of death, death rites, and consolation for the mourners. The approach to death corresponds to conventional medieval traditions. The subject was further developed in the Dances of Death of the 16th and 17th centuries.
