It is historically significant that the Jewish presses were in generl set up in small remote places, where they hoped more easily to escape the vigilant eye of the Inquisition. The Jews very soon understood how to profit by the new art. Of the greatest importance for Hebrew printing in Spain were the founts which Alfonso Fernandez de Cordoba cut at the beginning of the 80's in Valencia. It is probable that it was owing to this work that he was sentenced to death in absentia by the Inquisition. The type was apparently not used in Valencia itself, but , by intervention of Salomon ben Maimon Zalmati it passed 1st to Hyar in Aragon & from there to Lisbon into the hands of Rabbi Elieser . Whether A. Fernandez himself traveled along - his type is doubtful. At any rate the 2 Types of the Moses ben Nachmen viz. a large heading type & a cursive text type are absolutely identical - those whisch Eliaser A lantansi had formerly printed in Hyar. Both founts have no vowels, but the cursive fount is provided - additional sorts, which serve to fill out the ends of the lines. The fine metal cut initials which Fernandez de Cordoba made for his type were not used in the book; nevertheless they were in the possession of R. Elieser together - the title borders in the oriental style. Schwab Z240 S39 Ref (1964) #54 Moise b. Nahman. A few Hebrew books which bear no indication of place or date of imprint are believed to have been issued before the 1st dated books of 1475 . The Pentateuch commentary by Nah manides is considered to be among the 1st of the Roman Hebrew imprints ,& it may well be the 1st Hebrew printed book. Biblical commentaries preceded editions of the Scripture itself in the early years of Hebrew printing. Nahmanides is one of 10 medieval commentators whose works were printed in the incunabale period, either seperately or together - the biblical text. 1)[Rome] : Obadiah , Manasseh , & Benjamin of Rome, [bet. 1469 & 1472] 2) Naples : Joseph ben Jacob Askenazi Gunzenhauser ], 2 July 1490. fo 242 leaves. Forced to leave Spain 1207? - Nahmanidi's commentary on the Pentateuch, a popular work of biblical exegesis , was printed 3 times in the incunable period. which, more than a literal explanation of the meaning of works & phrases of Biblical passages , attempted to express the essance of Scriptual teachings.
