King Manuel #3 Ref Z2712 M29 Vol.1 AB(5)249 ie, July 1489. Eighth year of the reign of Dom Joao II. Folio . 152 and 148 (=300) leaves 35l. double col. text in Spanish Rabbinic Hebrew type, single words in large square Hebrew type - signatures in Hebrew - woodcut imitials. 2nd known book printed in Portugal & the first in the capital. Toledamo - had a press in Lisbon from 1489 - 92. one of the earliest to use borders. the following were printers who worked - Rabbi Elieza : Rabbi; Zorba , Zacheo , & Moses the son of Semtob. - 1st Latin Portuguese incunabulum - 1494 The earliest printing press in Portugal was the Hebrew one belonging to Samuel Gacon at Faro where the 1st known book printed in Portugal , The Pentatouch, was published on June 30, 1487. When the Christian rulers of Spain & Portugal began to expel the Jews at the end of the 15th C , they found refuge under the more tolerant rule of the Mahomedans. Some of the workmen from the Lisbon press went to Fez in Moroco (1516), another was the 1st printer in Salonia (Joseph Metatron in the house Judah Gedliah). (1512) #315 - Moshe Ben Yaacov of Coucy. Sefer Mitzvot Gadol (The Great Book of Precepts) 19 Dec 1488. Goff Heb 85 . The 1st book printed by Gershom Soncino (Sonino). #135. Berkowitz Ref. N8023 B4 f. 301 leaves , 2 col. (except fol.300a) 35 lines Incipits in large square & text in small rabbinic type cut in spain. Handsome woodcut decorative initials - outlines letters for section headings .Signatures present. Blanks : 1a, 152b, 153, 300b, 301 Colophoh on fol. 145a. - The earliest recorded printing in Portugal was of Hebrew books by Jewish printers. Their 1st press was at Faro; it was owned by Samuel Gacan or Portino, who [crossed out]used[end crossed out] issued a Pentateuch on 30 June 1487. The 2nd press was that of Rabbi Elieser; its first book is of July & August 1489, & 8 more, the last being of 1492 are attributed to it.

(191) about 120 incunabula have been ascribed to him Peter van Os was a native of Breda. First printer of Zwelle - founded his press in that city in 1479. One of the great texts of the Middle ages , printed numerous times , the 'Vita Christi' is a tremendously expanded life of Christ drawn from Biblical sources. the enterprising printer of this volume secured the numerous woodcuts used as illust. not only from a local artist but from Goudar Antwerp. All the cuts appear to have been used in books previously printed.

Oates 3629, 277mm. Aa4 Bb6 a-f6 y4 h-k6 l4 m-p6 g4 r-u6 x4 z6 74 96 A - C6 D4 E -I6 K4 L -R6 S4 T - Z6(Lombards ) A B6 C4 D - F6 G4 H - N6 356 leaves , the last blank. Schreiber woodcuts P.van Os must have been connected - Gerard Leeu , as he employed for the illustration of his books, the woodblocks which the latter had had cut in Gouda & Antwerp. Thus we find Leeu's illust. in several ed. of the Ludolphus (Camp. 1184 ff). L. de Saxonia - prior of the Charterhouse at Coblenz in the 14th C. It was not really a life of Christ , but rather meditations, intended for devotional reading , on scenes from the life of Christ suggested by the 4 Gospels.

Stanford Z881 U58ro The enterprising printer of this volume secured the numerous woodcuts used as illustrations not only from a local artist but from Gouda & Antwerp. All of the woodcuts appear to have been used in books previously printed.

Franciscan Literature Vita Christi - one of the enduring masterpieces of late medeival contemplative piety, can be said to be foster daughetr to St. Francis - The 2 major lives of Christ in the later middle ages were the Vita Christi of L. de Saxonia ( d. 1378, a Carthusian, & The Meditationes Vitae Christi formerly ascribed to St. Bonaventura. The Meditationes is no longer considered Bonaventura's work but it is a Franciscan production & Italian in origin.4

Botanical magazine - the 1st part published at one shilling in 1787 sold 3000 copies.

First & most important botanical magazine ever published. 1st part issued in Feb. 1787 Sydenham Edwards did most of the original drawings , engraved by Sansom, for the early numbers of the magazine

Le Mirouer de la Redemption de l'umain lignage , traduit du Latin en francais par julien Macho , de l'ordre des Augustins , a Lyon. Il parait que Mirour ext H-ouis la tradaction litterale du speculun vitae humanse Latin , qu'ure imitation de la compilation allemando impr. a Bale, 1476. C'est le premier livre illustre qui est ete imprime en France. [inserted](3 yrs earlier than at Paris)[end inserted] Les planches gravees sur bois et les caracteres Venaient de Bak. Huss les tenait de l'imprimeur B. Richel , qui avait public en 1476 une ed. German du meme ouvrage. (Spiegel menschlicher behaltnuss) L'edition francaise [renfere?] 256 planches ; 21 de moins que dans le I tirage fait a Bale. - printed - des caracters de 16 points, plus gros que le Type des deux precedents signs de M. Huss et de Jean Syber. Le Mirouer est moins une traduction du Speculum vitae humanse qu'une compilation : il se compose des 42 premiers chapitres du Speculum Latin , des 15 signes qui precederont le last Judgement , des predictions relatives a l'antechrist, dse Epitres et evangiles des dimanches et fetes de l'annee , et d'histores tirees de l'Ancien et du New Testament. cet ouvrage synthetisait les croyances religienses de l'epoque et s'adressait aux masses ; il eut un tres grand succes de vonte. Martin Huss 1478 - 1482. originaire de Botwar , Pres Marbach en Wurtenbeg. began printing in Lyon en societe - Jean Syber. The first book produced by Mathias Huss after over the press of his kinsman Martinus was the Mirour of 1482. In 1483 Matthias had as successive partners Petrus Ungarus & Johannes Schabeler who was still printing - him until July 1484. Thence forward Mathias printed alone
