Fort Worth Texas on 3 Nov. 1905

City Council:

Gentlemen:

I have received a statement from Mr. W. J. Gilvin, Tax Collector, that the Tax Books show taxes due by me and unpaid for 1899 - $7.45. Penalty $5.05; for 1900 $7.00 penalty $3.85 and for 1901 $32.07 and penalty $13.78 - Total $69.20.

I ask that these taxes be remitted. I cannot find the receipt receipts but these taxes must have been paid, as I owned real estate those years and personal property and collection would have been forced, if payment had not been made. I left Tarrant Co. in March 1901 and moved to Hardin Co. where I lived until Fall of 1903. In moving twice a great many of my papers were lost, in fact, nearly all of my papers and all my receipts. I was in condition to pay these taxes and would have paid them at any time had I been called upon and I do not the collector failed to do his duty & allowed them to go unpaid.

I understand that most of the $32.07 was taxes upon an abstract of Land Titles, part of these books were carried by me to Hardin Co. & used there, the others were left in Fort Worth and have never been used by me since. So that I should be relieved of the taxes on these Books for 1901 and I respectfully request you to relieve me of the payment of all penalties and the taxes on the Abstract Books. I would certainly not allowed these penalties to accumulate if I had been shown the taxes were due. I thought and believed that all my taxes were paid.
