MAY 1944

18 Thur-Ascension Day Went back to school again. Mrs Wright & Miss Saunders both away so had plenty of time to catch up with my work. Started doing my buttonholes on my blouse in evening Arthur came and hoed

19 Fri

Quite nice warm day. Mrs Wright back at school. Did revision in needlework. Had a lovely game of tennis in the afternoon. Did English & Maths Homework in evening. Had my hair washed.

20 Sat-s.r. 4.1, s.s. 7.52 Not a very nice day. Helped Mummy in morning and did some HW Had a bath in afternoon and went to Sutton. Mummy & Daddy went to First Aid competition in evening. Betty came for the evening.

It is advisable to lay straw between the rows of Strawberry plants just before the flowers open. The straw can be used to sprinkle over the plants should frost threaten during the flowering period. Remove all surplus "spawn" or suckers from rows of established Raspberries, retaining only sufficient strong shoots which are well placed and will be necessary for the next year's crop.

MAY 1944

21 Sun-Sunday after Ascension Cold windy day Sunday School anniversery. Went to all three services. Went to Auntie Connie to tea. Betty, Taffy Stan and Arther came in and had supper.

22 Mon-New Moon 6.12 a.m. Lovely day. Mistresses all back, but Miss Baird away. Had a nice time in science and played about in free lessons. Arthur came & hoed in afternoon and evening. Cut lawn and did another buttonhole

23 Tues Quite a nice day. Had a cookery test. I made lentil soup, cheese and potato pie and stewed rhubarb, and got on very well. Had a nice time in singing and rounders, Taffy came in evening. Did not do much homework

24 Wed-Empire Day Had a nice time in science. Had a history test on Italy in afternoon. It was awful. Betty and Arther came in evening. Betty has been posted to Witchford. She brought her cat Pickles [har]. Had a terrible lot of homework.

MAY 1944

25 Thur Quite a nice day. Janet crown came to live with us for two days. Had quite a nice gym lesson and had some fun in free lesson. Betty Elsie Taffey Arther and Leslie all came to the bible class

26 Fri-Easter Law Sittings end Mary, the Queen Mother, born, 1867 Lovely day. Did not do much in the morning Revised in needlework. Had a lovely time playing tennis in afternoon. Practised tennis in evening, and did some homework Peter very ill.

27 Sat-s.r. 3.53, s.s. 8.1 Simply gorgeous day Helped Mummy in morning and cooked dinner. Had a bath in afternoon. Hump popped in for a few minutes. Did some homework in evening. Arthur came and helped Daddy. Had a letter from Tom's mother.

Watch for the following pests, which are likely to appear in the vegetable garden : Black Aphis on Broad Beans, Carrot Fly, Onion Fly, Cabbage Root Maggot and Turnip Flea Beetle (see Page 38). Take the necessary steps for their destruction in the early stages. Sow Marrows in the open.

MAY 1944

28 Sun-Whit Sunday. Ember Week King Leopold surrendered, 1940 Gorgeous Day. Went to Sunday School in morning and taught primary. Went to S. School again in afternoon & afterwards cycled to Witch to see a Lancaster. Betty Hilda and Elsie came in evening.

29 Mon-Whit Monday. Bank Holiday Gorgeous day. Helped Mummy in morning and did the dinner. S. L. Hump came for tea. Colin popped in for a little while. Did another buttonhole in evening.

30 Tues-Whitsunday Fire Insurance ceases First Quarter, 12.6 a.m. Gorgeous day. Helped Mummy in morning and did a little homework. Wrote a history essay in the afternoon and learnt history in evening. [?] popped in for a short time. Poor little Peter died of destemper.

31 Wed-Ember Day Went to school quite a nice day. Had a nice science lesson and a history test on Canada. Taffy and Arther and Betty and Elsie came in evening.

JUNE 1944

1 Thur Quite a nice day. Went to the pool in morning, but can't swim. My hair went straight & I looked a mess. I had a nice French test in afternoon. Arthur came in evening. I mowed the lawn.

2 Fri-Ember Day Nice Day. Had a lecture with lantern slider by Dr Collins on things of interest in our district. I was quite nice. Had another lecture in afternoon on science and social life. Did a little homework in evening and played about with our magic lantern.

3 Sat-Ember Day s.r. 3.47, s.s. 8.9 Fairly nice day. Helped Mummy in morning and made a fruit pie, pork pie and jam & strawberry tarts. Had a bath in afternoon and had my hair washed in evening. Did my English homework and a buttonhole. Auntie Letty & Con cycled over to see us.

Plant Cauliflowers and maincrop Brussels Sprouts from seeds sown in a nursery seed-bed during March. Complete the hardening of such plants as Tomatos, Marrows, Dahlias, etc., raised under glass, in readiness for planting out in prepared ground in early June.
