APRIL - MAY 1944

30 Sun-3rd after Easter First Quarter 6.6 a.m. Lovely day. Went to Sunday School in morning and taught Primary. Went to S. School again in afternoon. Afterwards wrote to Betty. Had tea on the lawn. Went to chapel in evening.

1 May Mon-SS. Philip and James Bank Holiday in Scotland Gorgeous day. Helped, Mummie in morning. She washed. Got changed after dinner and did some revision. Drove tractor for Daddy in evening. Had my hair washed.

2 Tues Very strong gale blowing all day. Helped Mummy in morning and did some mending. Got changed in afternoon and went with Mummy to be Home Nurse. Bathed Read in evening.

3 Wed Started school again. We have got a new gym Mistress called Mrs Watkins. Had fairly nice lessons at school all day but had a lot a hard homework with luck [not] all the evening.

MAY 1944

4 Thur Rather cold day. Got blown up in maths because we did not do holiday work. Had a very nice lesson with new gym mistress. She is very nice. Got half my HW done in free lesson so did not have much in evening. Grandma & Mrs Taylor came to tea.

5 Fri-Haile Selassie restored, 1941 Cold day. Poured with rain at intervals. Had a theory lesson in needlework on sewing machines. Played rounders in afternoon but it rained half time. Mrs Gimbert came to tea. Did some H.W in evening. Had a bath.

6 Sat-s.r. 4.24, s.s. 7.30 Very cold day. Helped Mummy in morning and painted some of the bathroom. Wrote an essay on trees in the afternoon. Ted came in for supper. Finished the three muskateers.

Make the first sowing of Dwarf French Beans and successional sowings of Carrots and Cauliflowers. Spinach Beet for summer supplies should also be sown. Ground which has been cleared of winter greens can now be prepared for planting Leeks. Plant out border Chrysanthemums. Cold Districts.-Sow Beetroot for storing.

MAY 1944

7 Sun-4th after Easter Lovely day. Went to Sunday School in morning and taught primary. Went to S.School again in afternoon. Janet and I went to Chapel in evening and brought Taffy [...] Betty & Hilda home with us.

8 Mon-Full Moon 7.28 a.m. Glorious day. Had nice lessons at school all day and got my french finished in free lessons. Betty Puckey came to tea. Cut lawn in evening and bathed after.

9 Tues-Half-Quarter Day Gorgeous day. Made a Yorkshire pudding in cookery and prepared a test. Played rounders Got one homework done in free lesson. Mrs Salme and Jean came to tea. Taffy came & drove tractor in evening. Betty came for too.

10 Wed-Germany invaded Low Countries, 1940

Another lovely day. Had a lovely science lesson doing experiments. Had a horrible history written test in the afternoon. Did homework all the evening.

MAY 1944

11 Thur Quite a nice day. Did gym had a nice lesson. Had a french test in the afternoon. Mummy & Daddy went to W. L. A. dinner in evening. Did homework & then mowed the lawn.

12 Fri Gorgeous day. Started to do our school certificate darn in needlework. Had a very boring maths lesson and then had a lovely game of tennis. It was very hot. Did some homework and played about in evening.

13 Sat-s.r. 4.12, s.s. 7.42 Hot at first but rained in evening. Helped Mummy in morning and did my draws out & mowed the lawn. Winnie Stott came for weekend. Taffy came & drove tractor we all went to 2nd house of pictures and saw Lassie Come Home it was lovely.

Make a sowing of Round and Long Beetroot for storing, also Runner and Haricot Beans (the latter for drying) and Savoys for latest supplies. Plant out for early summer supplies Cabbages raised from seed sown in the nursery bed during March.

Cold Districts.-Sow Garden Swedes for storing and make the first sowing of Dwarf French Beans.

MAY 1944

14 Sun-Rogation Sunday Home Guard founded, 1940 Quite cold day. Went to sunday school in morning and taught primary. Went S. School again in afternoon. Stayed at home in evening and did my homework.

15 Mon-Rogation Day Scottish Quarter Day Last Quarter 11.12 a.m. Very cold day. I had a lovely letter from George. Trev has finished his opps. Miss Saunders Miss Borough & Mrs Wright all away from school. Got H W finished in free lessons. Had Taffy Arther Betty & Elsie all in to super

16 Tues-Rogation Day Did not go to school as had a bad sore throat. Stayed in bed until dinner time. Made some short bread biscuits in afternoon. Wrote a letter to George in evening. Mummy went to Sick Bay. Did some revision

17 Wed-Rogation Day Did not go to school again. Had letter from Betty and June. Did some revision during day. Taffy Arthur and Betty came in evening. Taffy &Arthur hoed beet.
