MARCH 1944

9 Thur Had a nice geography lesson. Did gym. Finished my letter to George in my free lesson and Betty posted it for me. Had a lovely french lesson. Did needlework homework. Had 5 airmen at study circle:- Colin, Gilbert P/05 Earnest, Taffy +&Arther.

10 Fri-Full Moon 12.28 a.m. Cold misty day. Had quite nice lessons in morning and after break had a lecture on Japan by Bishop Walsh. Very good. Did not play games in afternoon because of chilblains. Did revision in evening.

11 Sat-Lease-Lend Bill signed, 1941 s.r. 6.24, s.s. 5.58 Very cold wind. Helped Mummy in morning and then Janet & I went to Sutton. Got all my sweet ration. Had a bath in afternoon and did revision in the evening.

Make the main-crop sowing of Brussels Sprouts, Onions and Leeks. On a warm border make the first of successional sowings of Cabbage Lettuces, and stumprooted Carrots. Onions sown the previous August should now be ready for planting out on a well-prepared bed, taking care that the seedlings are not planted too deeply. Cold Districts.-Make the first sowing of Peas and Spinach.

MARCH 1944 12 Sun-3rd in Lent

Poured with rain in morning. Went to Sunday School and taught primary. Went to S. School again in afternoon. Grandma came to tea. Did revision in evening.

13 Mon

Had a two hour arithmetic exam in the morning which wasn't at all bad. Had 1½ Domestic sciences theory exam in afternoon which was awful. These exams are for mock school test. Revised in evening.

14 Tues Had another short D.S. exam in morning and then had a singing practice. Afterwards played net ball. Had a terrible General Geography exam in afternoon. Revised science in evening. Ted came in late in evening.

15 Wed-Russo-Finnish Peace Treaty, 1940 Had 2 1/2 hr English Grammar exam in morning Revised in afternoon. Had a letter from George. He can walk again. Went to see play which Mummy was in in evening. We took Taffy, Aurther & two Waafs with us.

MARCH 1944

16 Thur Had 2¾ hrs science exam in morning which was quite nice. In afternoon had a terrible Geography exam I couldn't do hardly anything. Went for a walk in evening with Janet and picked some violets.

17 Fri-S. Patrick Bank Holiday in Eire and Northern Ireland Last Quarter, 8.5 p.m. Had a 2 hr algebra exam in morning which was terrible. Gorgeous day, went outside for Maths in the afternoon. Did not play games. Did odd jobs in evening.

18 Sat-s.r. 6.8, s.s. 6.9 Helped Mummy in the morning and cleaned my cupboard out whilst cleaning my bedroom. Did some revision in the afternoon and evening.

In a nursery seed-bed make a sowing of early maturing varieties of Cabbage and Cauliflower. Prune newly planted Black Currants by cutting every shoot on the young bushes back to two or three buds above ground level. Gooseberries and Red Currants which were left unpruned during winter to minimise damage to the buds by birds can now be pruned.

MARCH 1944

19 Sun-4th in Lent Went to Sunday School in morning and afterwards went to see Ian who is over. Went to S. School again in afternoon. Revised in evening. Taffy Aurther and two waafs came in in evening. We sang a lot of hymns.

20 Mon-Vernal Equinox Denys Birthday Quite a nice day. Did not have any exams but had ordinary lessons. Revised in History. Then went to cathedral for a rehearsal. Had lessons as usual in the afternoon.

21 Tues Quite a nice day but cold. Had another rehearsal in the morning and had our photos taken. In afternoon the Festival took place, over 1,000 children there. Mummy, Mrs [Lambert] and Ted came. Revised in evening.

22 Wed

Janet had a long letter from George. Had a 2½ hour History Exam in morning which was not too bad and a 2 hr Biology exam in afternoon. Revised English in evening. Ted came in

MARCH 1944

23 Thur Quite a nice day. Had 2½ hr English literature exam in morning and 1½ hour French exam in afternoon. Had to make a long detour on our journey home because of crashed lancaster. Hump came for tea and we went for a walk with him. Mummy & Daddy went to a land Army Dinner.

24 Fri-New Moon, 11.36 a.m. Quite a nice day. Had a 2 hr practical needlework exam. It was terrible and I had a headache all the time. Hockey matches were played in the afternoon. Did my part of the Windyridge Weekly and started writing to George in evening Daddy cut my hair & M. washed it.

25 Sat-Annunciation of B.V.M. Lady Day (Quarter Day) s.r. 5.52, s.s. 6.22 Lovely day. Decided to Spring clean my bedroom. Did it nearly all on my own and distempered the walls. Finished at about 6 o'clock. Had a bath and then finished my letter to George.

Prune Roses commencing with the H.P. varieties. Cut out weak and diseased wood entirely and shorten the selected strong growths according to strength and requirements. Sow hardy annuals thinly where they are to flower. Cold Districts.-Make the first sowing of Carrots on a warm border.
