APRIL 1944

13 Thur Quite a nice day with a few showers. Cleaned my bedroom in morning and made some ginger biscuits. Drove tractor in afternoon. Mummy went to Ely. Did errands in evening.

14 Fri Quite nice day but cold. Had a letter from Betty. Mummy and I spring cleaned her bedroom. I varnished floor. Drove tractor for Daddy in evening.

15 Sat-s.r. 5.5, s.s. 6.56 Quite a nice day. Drove tractor for Daddy in morning. Cycled to Betty's in afternoon. She met me. We went to the pictures & saw Millions Like Us. Betty came half way home with me. Ted brought my watch back.

On soil which is not too rich, make a sowing of Onions for pickling. All newly-planted fruit trees, especially those growing against walls, should be given a mulch to conserve moisture. Where American Gooseberry Mildew is prevalent spray bushes with a wash consisting of 1 1/2 lb. Washing Soda and 1 lb. Soft Soap dissolved in ten gallons of water.

APRIL 1944

16 Sun-Low Sunday. Summer Time begins Last Quarter, 4.59 a.m. Quite nice day. Went to Sunday School in morning and taught Primary. Read and played piano in afternoon. Ted came for tea and supper. I went with Daddy to Chapel in evening.

17 Mon Cold dull day. Had a lovely parcel from George. Chocs & photo. Also had letters from Sheila & Taffy's wife. Drove tractor for Daddy rest of the day. Went for a walk with Janet in evening.

18 Tues-Easter Law Sittings begin Gorgeous day. Wrote a letter to George in morning. Mummy spring cleaned lounge. Drove tractor with Mr. Lebus behind in morning & afternoon and with Colin behind in evening.

19 Wed

Fairly cold windy day. Helped Mummie with the spring cleaning in morning. Started to paint the summer house pale green inside. in afternoon. Drove tractor in evening. Had my hair washed & a bath.

APRIL 1944

20 Thur Quite a nice day. Cleaned my bedroom and Mummy's in morning. Went to Ely in afternoon and Mummy bought me a new green check costume. Saw Hump. Went to study circle in evening. We had Gwen, a waaf, in.

21 Fri-The Princess Elizabeth born, 1926 Quite nice day. Mummy washed and I helped her. Painted some more of the summer house in afternoon. Hump popped in for a few minutes. Read in the evening.

22 Sat-New Moom 8.43 p.m. s.r. 4.50, s.s. 7.7 Gorgeous day. We had a letter from George in morning. Mummie and Janet went to Ely in morning. I did all the work. Drove the tractor in afternoon and evening. We had tea in the summer house.

In a nursery seed-bed sow Cauliflowers for autumn supplies, Cabbages and Savoys for autumn and winter use, also all kinds of heading Broccoli. When thoroughly hardened, plant out Onions, Cabbages and Cauliflowers which have been raised under glass sown during January and February. Plant main-crop Potatos. Cold Districts.-In the open garden make the first sowing of Beetroot for summer supplies.

APRIL 1944

23 Sun-2nd after Easter. S. George

Lovely day. Went to S. School in morning and taught Primary. Had Mr Hare for dinner. Went to S. School in afternoon & wore my new costume. S. L. Hump came for tea & took me to coral services in church. Taffy Stan Aurther Billy and Elsie came in to supper.

24 Mon Quite a cold dull day. We spring cleaned the sculery. I painted it all pale green. Got changed in evening and listened to wireless. Ted came in. Drove the tractor for a short time.

25 Tues-S. Mark Cold windy day. Made some short bread biscuits in morning. Painted the outside of the summer house dark green in afternoon. Drove tractor in evening.

26 Wed Gorgeous day. Helped Mummie in morning and made a cake and some oatmeal biscuits. Went to meet Betty in afternoon who came for tea. Drove tractor in evening.

APRIL 1944

27 Thur Lovely day. Mummy & Janet went to Dentist's in morning. I stayed at home and did work. Varnished lounge floor and hall. Read in afternoon and evening.

28 Fri Rather cold day. Helped Mummy in the morning and then got changed. Did a little revision in the afternoon and then went and watched the fire at the Chestnuts. About 6 fire engines came and got it under control. Drove tractor in evening.

29 Sat-s.r. 4.26, s.s. 7.19 Quite a nice day. Had a letter from Betty. Helped Mummy in morning and mowed lawn. Drove the tractor in afternoon and evening. Had a bath before I went to bed.

In a nursery seed-bed sow Kales and Sprouting Broccoli. When soil conditions are favourable, every opportunity from now onwards should be taken to hoe frequently between the rows of growing crops. Hardy Water-Lilies may now be transplanted.
