JUNE 1944

22 Thur - Germany signed Armistice with France, 1940 Germany attacked Russia, 1941

Lovely day. Did not go in swimming as had a bad cold. Had quite nice lessons for the rest of the day. Picked strawberries with P/o Philip [] in evening. Went to Sutton to invite Mund to tea on Sunday Had a lot of airforce at Bible class.

23 Fri Windy day. Did some work in free lesson. Did revision in Needlework. Mrs Wright away so had History lesson. Betty and I played singles in the afternoon. Had a good time. Did some homework.

24 Sat - S. John Baptist Midsummer Day (Quarter Day) s.r. 3.43, s.s. 8.21 Gorgeous day. Helped Mummy in morning and went to Sutton. Phil came in morning. Sun-bathed in afternoon, and had a bath. Did some homework in afternoon and had my hair washed.

Plant out Celery and Celeriac and keep well watered. To prolong supplies make further sowing of Marrows direct into the open ground.

Keep a look-out for Apple Sawfly. Pick off and burn any fruits attacked by this pest.

Cold Districts. - Sow Spinach to stand the winter.

JUNE 1944

25 Sun - 3rd after Trinity Windy day. Went to Sun school in morning and played the piano. Did not go in afternoon, did some revision. Muriel came for tea, and so did Phil. Went to chapel in evening with Betty & Muriel.

26 Mon Quite warm day with showers. Did notes in history and Richard II in English. Had quite a nice Science lesson and did some work in free lessons. Did some work in and Phil came and picked strawberries and also came & showed us his photos.

27 Tues Did not go to school as wasn't well Phil came in morning and Ted came on his day off. Did some revision in afternoon. Hilda came up with Margaret. Phil came in evening and we picked strawberries. Did some more revision.

28 Wed - First Quarter, 5.27 p.m. Rainy day. Went to school. Miss Borough away ill. Had a nice French lesson. Didn't have a history test got her talking on Parliament. Phil came in evening + picked some strawberries. Did some revision. Had four RAF at bible class. Janet & I went for a walk in evening.

JUNE - JULY 1944

29 Thurs - S. Peter Did not go to school as it was half day in any case. Helped Mummy in morning and picked some raspberries. Did some revision in afternoon. Phil came in evening and we picked strawberries.

30 Fri Did not go to school. Lovely day Helped Mummy in morning and cleaned my bedroom. Colin & Gilbert are back from early leave and helped them pick some strawberries. Did revision rest of afternoon and evening.

1 July Sat - s.r. 3.47, s.s. 8.20 Very miserable showery day. Picked strawberries all the morning in the mud. Picked some rasps in afternoon Muriel came for tea. Played about in evening. It poured with rain. Had a bath.

On vacant ground from which crops of Broad Beans or early Peas have been cleared make another sowing of Round Beetroot and Carrots for storing. Plant out Cauliflowers for late summer use, Cabbages for autumn and winter, and Brussels Sprouts for latest supplies. Plant Leeks for winter use.

Layer Strawberries as soon as layers are available.

Cold Districts. - Plant all kinds of Broccoli, including sprouting.

JULY 1944

2 Sun - 4th after Trinity Lovely day. Went to sunday school in morning and taught primary. revised outside in afternoon. Mrs Humphreys and Maureen came for tea. Phil came for short time in evening. Colin Gilbert and Taffy came for supper. It was a farewell party because they are posted.

3 Mon Poured nearly all day. Helped Mummy in the morning and we washed in the afternoon. Phil came in evening and we had a fight. Ernest came to wish us goodbye Alex Simpson and L. bombadier in Phils crew came in for supper. Wrote to Jane & Betty.

4 Tues Lovely day. Helped Mummy in morning and cooked the dinner. Phil & Alec went on leave. Helped with the serving. Jerry Nickson came in evening. Colin came to wish us goodbye. They all had supper together Betty & Elsie popped in too.

5 Wed Nice day. Helped Mummy in morning and served strawberries. Ted came in evening and made us a chicken coop. Elsie came & picked rasps. Peggy Davison arrived in evening. Colin left this dorne.

JULY 1944

6 Thur - Full Moon, 4.27 a.m. Gerald's Birthday Lovely day. Helped Mummy in morning and cooked the dinner. Peggy picked strawberries. George Sinclair, N a canadian F/O, came in for short time in afternoon. Peggy & Daddy went to Ely. Went for a bike ride & played about in evening.

7 Fri Gorgeous day. Janet did not go to school because school shut for evacuees. Peggy and I did homework and served in morning. Muriel came up in evening and we messed about together. Wrote to Betty. Ted and Bill came for supper. Jerry mended our wireless

8 Sat - Midsummer Fire Insurance ceases s.r. 3.53, s.s. 8.17 Glorious day. Helped Mummy in morning and mowed the lawn. Leslie Wichard an Australian came in afternoon. Went to doctor's in evening for some medicine. Gerald came in evening.

Sow a suitable variety of Turnip for storing. Plant Leeks and maincrop Savoys. Water established plants of Celery regularly in dry weather ; dust with soot at weekly intervals to ward off Celery Fly.

Cold Districts. - Make a further sowing of Turnips for storing. Plant Cauliflowers for autumn supplies and Kales for winter use.
