August 13/53 [1853]

Board of Alderman met on call of the Mayor at his office at 10 A.M. Present His Honor the Mayor Amos Clark, Alderman, Edwards, Forbes, Hart, and Starr.

His Honor presented to the Board a communication recommending ammendments need additions to the ordinances --- which was refered to com [committee] consisting of Aldermen, Taylor, Edwards, and Starr. to report by ordinance or otherwise on the 15th next at 10 a.m.

On motion, the Street Com [Committee] were authorized to build such bridges as may required over the ditches.

Board adjourned to meet again Aug [August] 15/ 53 [1853] at 10 a.m. Jas [James] H. Starr Sec pro tem

Aug [August] 15th, 1853. Board of Alderman met according to adjournment. Present his Honor, the Mayor Amos Clark, Aldermen, Starr, Forbes, Edwards, Hart, and Nelsen Secy [Secretary]. The Committee appointed at the last meeting made their report.

Saturday eveg [evening] August 20/53 [1853]

Board of Alderman pursuant call present his Honor the Mayor Amos Clark + [and] Alderman, Taylor, Starr, Forbes, and Nelson, secy [Secretary].

The account of Michael Michan for digging 151 1/2 roads of ditch at 50 [cent] per road amounting to $75.75 was allowed and warrant [illegible] for payment of the same by resolution to the following effect to wit

Resolved that the a/c [account]of M [Michael] Michan for ditching be approved and the amt [amount] paid out of the treasury.

Board adjourned.

Mayor's office Jany [Janurary] 2, 1854.

Board of Alderman met pursuant to call of his Honor the Mayor. Present his Honor Amos Clark, Mayor Forbes and Starr and Secy [Secretary] Nelson.

On motion, it was resolved that the secretary be required to call on the assessor and collector and request him to report at the next meeting The progres he has made in collecting the taxes for the last year.

The Street com [Committee] H.H. Edwards and John Forbes made a verbal report on the situation of the streets and the amt [amount] required to repair them.

On motion, further time was given the Street com [Committee] to complete their examination of the streets and make a written report.

On motion, it was resolved that the Constable be required to examine all the streets of the Corporation and notify such persons as places obstructions and streets to new one their or the ordinance prohibiting such obstructions will be enforced agst [against] motion.

On motion, resolved that a Commitee be appointed consisting of his Honor Mayor Clark, Col Raguet, and Doc Starr who shall draw up an ordinance relating to the manner of quelling disturbances at negro balls and report at next meeting.

On motion, adjourned until Monday might January 9, 1854.

Mayor office Jany [January] 9, 1854. Board of Alderman met according to adjournment present his Honor Mayor Clark, Alderman, Forbes, Raguet, Taylor, Edwards, Starr, and Nelson Secy [Secretary].

Street com [Committee] Forbes and Edwards made their report On motion, it was resolved that the report of the Street com [Committee] be adopted and appropriations be made to defray every expense which may have been or may be here after incurred in accor dance with said report

Resolved that thesum of $14.50 be appropri ated for payment of Moane and Harrison Bill for printing

Collector reported that he had nearly completed his assessment for the last year but had not yet made any collection and asked for instructions as to the [illegible] or legality of assessing two establishments instead of one in certain instances

The com [committee] appointed consisting of Mayor Clark, Alderman, Raguet and Starr reported an ordinance in relation to Negro Balls which on motion was adopted. On motion adjourned to the next regular meeting in course.

Mayor's Office. Monday, April 3rd, 1854. Board of Alderman met in regular meeting. Present his Honor Amos Clark, Mayor Alderman, Starr, Edwards, Forbes, Nelson, secy [Secretary].

On motion, resolved that the Collector be notified to make report of the collected and uncollected taxes for last year the report to be submitted on Saturday next at 10 o'clock a.m.

Resolved that the Street Com [Committee] contract if possible for such work as may be urgent. If needed on the streets and report at next meeting.

expired within which the Mayor could order to hold the annual election for the present year and the Chief Justice being the officer under the law who alone can hold the said election that Hon [Honorable] Bennett Blake be notified of the fact and requested to order and hold the said election as early as will suit his convenience.

The Mayor respectfully submits for the consideration at the Board this following subjects to wit 1st what if anything can practically be done to guard against him, whether by patrol or otherwise

2c [nd] whether it would not be expedient to require the owner of property on Main and North Streets to construct side walks at their own expense

3rd, Whether it would not be expedient to rerquire Tavern Hotel Grocery + [and] Store Keeper to obtain a lincense [license] to prosecute their business.

The first subject was to com [Committee] composed of Starr + [and] Nelson, Alderman.

The 2nd to the Street Committee. The 3rd to the Mayor.

And it was further resolved that the subject of licenses Taxals on and the buying of this taxers generally be submitted to the attention of the Mayor to be reported upon by ordinance or otherwise at the next meeting.

Board adjourned until Saturday next 10 o'clock a.m. April 8th, 1854.
