Sterile spike solitary erect, long peduncled, fertile spikes three remote, leafy bracteate, the highest nearly sessile, ovate, close-flowered, the two lower oblong, distant loose-flowered, and pedunculate; perigynia ovate, conic, rather obtuse, on the upper spike closer, larger, & much longer than the ovate cuspidate scale, on the lower spikes loose and a little longer than the scale. Culm 12 to 16 inches high; bracts long and leafy.

Sterile spike solitary, sessile; fertile spikes 3 to 5 oblong, loosely flowered, remote, and the lowest distant, perigynia ovoid-oblong, obscurely nerved, rather longer than the ovate awned scale; achenium obovate, triquetrious, pitted under a lens; bracts leafy much exceeding the culm.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and about Lake Superior. Extends from Louisiana to the arctic regions

Sterile spike solitary nearly sessile, or sometimes on a long peduncle, short; fertile spikes 3 to 6, long and cylindrical, somewhat erect, and loose-flowered lower ones long peduncled, with long leafy bracts, much exceeding the culm; perigynia oblong-ovate, obtuse or emarginate, slightly nerved, a little inflated; scale ovate acute, awned, about two-thirds the length of the [crossed out] perigynium. Culm twelve to eighteen inches high; -- flowers in May. Wet grounds. --

Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Extends East to N. York, and south to Texas and Florida

Sterile spike solitary, fertile above; fertile spikes 2 to 4, rather loose-flowered, oblong-cylindrical, rather thick on long peduncles; perigynia oblong contracted at each end, nerved, slightly inflated; scale oblong conspicuously awned, about the length of the perigynium. Culms one to two feet high; flowers in May. Meadows--

Beloit, Wisconsin; Illinois; Southern Indiana; and Ohio.

Sterile spike solitary, pistillate above, pedunculate; fertile spikes three, oblong, thick somewhat three sided on slender long [received?] peduncles, bracts leafy; not exceeding the culm; perigynia acutish at both ends, globrous, nerved, nearly twice as long as the ovate pointed or cuspidate scale. Culm 12 to 18 inches high; flowers in May. Wet meadows.
