Sterile spike solitary, with a few fertile flowers at the apex; fertile spikes filiform slender, pendulous loose-flowered, on long very delicate peduncles; perigynia oblong obtuse slightly nerved, slightly oblique at the orifice; longer than the oblong awned scale. Culm one to two feet high; flowers in May. About moist grounds

Spikes 3 or 4 ovoid-oblong, approximate, nearly sessile, the upper staminate below; perigynea ovate-triangular, downey when young, smooth at maturity, longer than the ovate, pointed scale; leaves and especially the sheaths hairy. Culms 12 to 18 inches high; flowers in May. Moist meadows.
Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Extgends south to Louisiana, north to the Arctic regions & east to the N. England states.

Spikes 3 or 4 sub-umbelform, sub-sessile upper one oblong, staminate below; perigynia oval, roundish, triquetrous, orifice entire; longer than the ovate or oblong black scale; bracts exceeding the culm. Culm 6 to 10 inches high; flowers in May. Alpine meadows.
About Lake Superior. Also in the Arctic regions of Europe and America.

Sterile spike solitary; fertile spikes four oblong 5 to 8 flowered, on stems about the length of the spikes; perigynia ovoid= =triquetrous striate; bracts very short, dark purple, or the lowest greenish at the apex; leaves all radical, very broad, nerved. Culms 12 to 18 inches high; flowers in May Shady woods, in damp, rich soil.
Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and about Lake Superior. Northward to the arctic regions, and eastward to New England.
