Syn. C striatula Michx. C. conoidea Muhl. (not of Schk.)

Staminate spike single erect, pedunculate, short; fertile spikes 2 to 4, oblong densely flowered, the upper nearly sessile, the others remote, long peduncled; perigynia obovate, nerved, obtusely triangular, narrowed at each end, about the length of the scale. Culms 12 to 18 inches high; leaves linear; bracts leafy, longer than the culm. Flowers in May. Dry woods and meadows.

Milwaukee to La Crosse in Wisconsin. Illinois, Ohio. Extends from Texas to the Arctic regions, and eastward to N. York.

Sterile spike solitary, linear, short; fertile spikes 2 to 4, small distant, 3 to 8 flowered, upper one sessile, the lower pedunculate; peri= =gynia obovate, roundish, the point slightly oblique, not [recurved?]; style very short thickened towards the base; scale ovate or oblong mucronate, shorter than the perigynium; leaves rough only on the edge, sheaths smooth. Culms 8 to 12 inches high. Flowers in [blank] In woods.

Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio, and about Lake Superior. Extends southward to Florida.

Sterile spike single, pedunculate, linear, short; fertile spikes two to four, erect, short-pedunculate, very loosely 3 to 7 flowered; perigynia elliptic striate, tapering at each end, recussed, with a short beak; sheaths and upper side of the leaves covered with a scabrous pubescence. Culms 1 to 2 feet high. Flowers in May. In woods.

Southern Indiana, and Ohio. Southward to Kentucky and Eastward to the New England states.

Sterile spike solitary; fertile spikes 3 or 4, erect, about 5 flowered, approximated and elevated on long stalks above the staminate spike; perigynia obscurely nerved, smooth & shining, reddish-brown or olive colored at maturity; bracts very short; scales white, broad, obtuse, membranaceous rather shorter than the perigynium; leaves all radical, very narrow; culm slender 4 to 10 inches high. Flowers in May. Moist shady places.

Spikes 3 to 5, short, on long peduncles, remote, the lowest often near the base of the culm, the highest staminate above, the others with a few staminate flowers at the apex; perigynia with a long attenuate base, and a minutely notched orifice, about the length of the obovate, abruptly awned or pointed dark purple scales; bracts shorter than the spikes; achenium obovate, triquestrous, style persistent, enlarged at the base; leaves all radical, flat. Culms 4 to 10 inches high dark purple at the base; flowers in May. Hill-sides.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Ohio, Northward to the Arctic regions.
