X.24.c.1.2 1st Battalion in Support in Marcoing Line. Relieved at about 7.30 p.m. and proceeded to area near BOURLON under command of Major Rowlandson. Enemy bombing planes very active. Weather Fine. RBO'S

W.30.c.20.50 2 Battalion Resting all day. "B" Echelon in Quarry Wood E.10.a.50.2. Left at 6.00 p.m. and marched to west of QURANT arriving at V.25.c.5.75 at about 9.30 p.m. Hot tea and light lunch served by kitchens. Reinforcements fifty O.R.s. Weather wet. RBO'S

V.25.c.5.75 3 Battalion re-organizing. Salvaging Party. Weather Fine. RBO'S

do 4 Battalion re-organizing. Battalion Paid in afternoon. Weather cloudy, windy and cold. RBO'S

do 5 Battalion re-organizing. Salvaging Party. Weather Fair. RBO'S

do 6 Preparing to move. Part of Transport moved off at 7.30 a.m. and remaindeer at 1.30 p.m. Battalion left B.H.Q. at 10.00 p.m. arriving at Embussing Point near QURANT at 11.00 p.m. Moved off in lorries at 11.15 p.m. Enemy aircraft dropped bombs but no casualties in the 38th Battalion. Weather cloudy all day, clear at night. RBO'S

HAUTE AVESNES 7 Battalion arrived at HAUTE AVESNES at 4.00 a.m. Rested all day. B.H.Q. at approximately E.28.a.50.45. Weather wet. RBO'S

do 8 Brigade Guard supplied by 38th Battalion. Brigade inspected by General Sir David L. Watson KCB, CMG. Weather Fine. RBO'S

do 9 Acting Brigadier General holds conference of all Officers of the Battalion in Mess at 11.30. Bathing Parade in afternoon. One Officer reinforcement,-Lieut. W.E.French,DCM. RBO'S

do 10 Rain all day. Route March arranged for cancelled. RBO'S

do 11 Fine. Training - Platoon and Section Drill, Physical Training, Musketry, and Lewis Gun. Football match in afternoon between Brigade sub-staff and 38th. Result - tie. News of Lieutenant Burke's death received in evening. RBO'S

HAUTE Aveanes 12 Pay Parade and Kit Inspection in morning. Half-holiday in afternoon. Weather Fine. RBO'S

do 13 R.C. Church Parade at 9.00 a.m. Protestant Church Parade at 10.00 a.m. Weather Fine. RBO'S

do 14 Battalion making preparations to proceed into line. Reinforcements 127. Weather wet. RBO'S

do 15. Tranport moved off at 7.30 a.m. Battalion moved off in full marching order at 11.00 a.m. (starting point E.28.c.50.95). Proceeded to AGNEZ LES DUISSANS arriving at 12.00 noon. Had dinner at C.C.R.C. Entrained at 1.45. Arrived at MARQUOIN at 9.00 p.m. and marched to SAUCHY LESTREE. B.H.Q. at W.5.b.35.60. Some Hun shells fell around SAUCHY LESTREE and near Canal Crossing in afternoon and evening. RBO'S

SAUCHY LESTREE 16. At SAUCHY LESTREE. Major A.S.English and Lieu. R.S.Cross reported to the Battalion. Weather cloudy. Divisional Reserve. RBO'S

do 17 At SAUCHY LESTREE. Weather Cloudy. Divisional Reserve. RBO'S

do 18 Battalion moved off at 10.00 a.m. full marching order. Surplus baggage left in store at Sauchy Lestree. Halted for dinner at R.21.b.50.95. Moved into village at 2.30. Battalion Headquarters at R.15.b.d.21.b. in AUBENCHEL-AU-BEC. Weather Fine. RBO'S

AUBENCHEL AU-BEC 19 Preparing to move. Party of 160 O.R.'s and 4 N.C.O.'s cleaning up obstacles in streets. Battalion moved off at 3.00 p.m.full marching order, via FRESAIN and MONCHCOURT, arriving at EMERCHICOURT at 6.00 p.m. B.H.Q. in Chateau. Rained heavily all night. RBO'S

EMERCHICOURT 20 Left Emerchicourt at 10.30 a.m. and arrived in MASTAING at 12.30. B.H.Q. in Church Parochial School. Weather dull. Foot examination by Medical Officer. RBO'S

MASTAING 21 Commanding Officer holds conference of Company Commanders in Headquaraers Mess at 9.30 a.m. Company Inspection 11.00 a.m. C.O. inspects billets at 11.00 a.m. Few civilians in town. Orders to move at 4.30 p.m. cancelled. Mayor of MASTAING returned to his home after absence of four years. He asked for a French Newspaper. Was Guest of Officers to dinner. Weather dull. RBO'S

MASTAING 22 Left Mastaing at 9.00 a.m. and marched to LOURCHES arriving at 11.00 a.m. Stopped for dinner. Moved off again at 1.30 and marched to ROUVIGNIES, via DENAIN and WAVERCHAIN SUR DENAIN. Battalion and "A" Echelon at ROUVIGNIES. "B" Echelon at WAVERCHAIN SUR DENAIN. Relieved 44th Canaidans in support. "B" Company put outpost at PROUVY. Battalion accorded great reception while passing through DENAIN. RBO'S

ROUVIGNIES 23 In support of 85th Battalion. Weather dull. Casualties - 5 O.R.'s wounded. RBO'S

do 24 In support of 85th Battalion. Very quiety day and night. Forces on our flanks advancing. RBO'S

do 25 In support of 85th Battalion. Lieut.-Colonel A.D.Cameron / (MC) took over command of the Battalion Quiet all day. Barrage at 7.30 p.m. Weather dull. RBO'S

do 26 Preparations for taking over front line position from 85th Canadians. 51st Division attack on our right. Fine. Casualties Officers - 1, Lieut. H.C.Crowell. RBO'S

do 27 Battalion relieved 85th Canadians in front line. Headquarters at LA SENTINELLE. RBO'S

Front Line 28 Battalion holding same position in front line as on 27th. Lord BROOKE, first BrigadierGeneral of the 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade, paid a visit to Brigade. Weather dull. Casualties - 2 O.R.'s wounded. RBO'S

do 29 Battalion holding same position in front line as on 28th. Ration train came under very heavy shelling in La SENTINELLE. Lieut. R.H.Cochran and Corporal A. Newbold were both killed. Casualties Officers - Killed - 1 Lieut. R.H.Cochran, One Officer wounded - Lieut. J.A.D.Elder. 1 O.R. killed, 4 O.R.'s wounded. All back areas heavily shelled with H.E.& Gas by Hun. RBO'S

do 30 Battalion holding same position in front line as on 29th. Lieut. R.H.Cochran and Cpl.Newbold buried in Denain Cemetery This day set aside for decoration of graves of Canadians who have been killed in action, by civilians in this area, Weather Fine. RBO'S
