My MS is all complete & the great bulk of it is in the hands of the printer. I am [restricted?] by my publisher to 400 [pp?]. I have 72 illustrations & the only way that I have been able to accomplish this without probable loss to him is by an arrangement [illegible] [illegible] by which I pay 1/2 of the cost of the figures of [illegible] in the last [illegible] of the [illegible]- alist, & with [illegible] by which he agreed to appropriate $60 to the illustration of my skull paper & let me have electrolytes at cost. I have corrected about 25 pp of proof & find that [2 1/4?] p of my MS = 1 page of print - [illegible] is more than I calculated [illegible] & I must go

I have thoroughly reviewed all the cases mentioned of of the ^supposed^ occurrence of human remains in deposits older than the "recent."

The copper rod is similar to that of Mr P. which I have figured. Those fluted axes are unique. Mr. P. showed me a drawing of a very fine one. The most I can now do is to make a note of the fact.

I see you spell "Bysicon." I always trusted to poor Stimpson in these matters & in the proof of my academy article, he spells "Busycon" — I have no [an?]= [illegible] in my library but Woodward's Man of Mollusca. Letter from Increase Allen Lapham to J. Druecker (?), February 28th

[I. A. L. to J. Druecker]

Milwaukee Feb 28 - 1873

Dr Sir

In reply to your letter of 26th inst I have to say that I think the price asked for the quarry I examined for you in August last ($5000 for 20 acres) is a pretty round one considering the fact that only "rough stone" can be got out. Though it is often found that stone improves in quality as greater depth is attained, yet this is not always so - and hence it should not do be relied upon. this with certainty. From the slight examination I made I suppose that the rock below your quarry will be found the same as is found in the bed of the creek below

and there if I remember did not indicate any very valuable building stone. Though the indications are that there may be in the lower layers ^of your quarry^ good "dimension stone" this is not sufficiently certain to justify the payment of a very large price for the quarry ^it.^

Mr. I. A. Lapham Milwaukee

Dr Sir!

I am offered the stone quarry comprising about 20 acres which you inspected last year.

The price however which the owner asks is too large $5000 —

I have now a side track in and can ship by cars either to Milwaukee or Sheboygan — Thus far I have no dimension stone out yet. I have made a face with blasting of about 15 feet long and 8 feet wide through four layers what I suppose will make dimension stone.

The first layer is 18 inches the second one 9 inches the 3rd layer 15 inches and the 4th 24 inches thick.

The two upper layers have small yellow lines yet, which seem to have been once cracks but seem to hold at present, however that is something which should not be in dimension stone.
