Hillsburgh and Bainbridge arrived at Chilliocthe at 9 o'clock PM. This rout is the same as that taken by Darius in June last and as it is very minutely as well as very correctly described by him in hi s letter to me dated Chillicothe June 23 1828, I do not think it is neccessary to repeat his observations. The rock at the mouth of the Rocky fork of the Paint Creek belongs [I think] to the [illegible] and that this rock is here, as at the Ohio Falls...

Chillicothe Ohio

...immediately overlaid by the third gray [wacke?], without the intervention of the geodiferous & [cormtiferous?] limerocks as was supposed by him. Fryday Nov 7th Found Darius this morning and after breakfast we went to the quarry which is of sandstone very similar to that found at the quarry 10 miles below the Ohio Falls, belonging to the third graywacke formation of Eaton - for further perticulars [sic] respecting the geology of the hills...

16 Yellow Bud Creek

...adjoining the Scioto valley, see the letter from Darius above referred to. Stayed with him at the quarry all day. Saturday Oct 8 - This morning Pagain went to the quarry with Darius and when we returned at noon we found Father at the inn with each of us a horse to ride up to the Yellow Bud Creek about 10 miles from Chillicothe in a northern direction & it is here that our job on the Ohio canal is situated and here also the family resides.

11 Yellow bud creek

We arrived a little before night - found several of the younger members of the family shaken with ague and fever. Nov 9th Sunday Stayed at home all day. Nov 10th 1828 In the forenoon I made a table for writing upon &c. and in the afternoon I spent my time in laying out a grind stone for William to cut - Darius left us for Chillicothe this morning about sun-rise.

Nov 11th Tuesday Spent part of my time writing Wm - Cut his grind stone Nov 12 Wednesday Father left us this morning for Lancaster where 115 miles of canal is to be let on the 14 inst. lock to be constructed of wood; he will probably be home on Sunday next - Finished the grind stone. 13 Yellow bud - Ohio

...one of the genus Cyclas and some univalve shells Nov 13th Thursday Went to the Scioto river, distance about one mile from where we live- discovered on the way an ancient artificial mound of an eliptical form about 12 feet high - the earth from one end had been removed and converted into brick, tho. not deep enough to discover any thing of its contents. At the river I collected several species of Unio which are not found...

14 Yellow bud Ohio

...at the Ohio Falls - A slight shower of snow fell for the first in the season Nov 14th Fryday I stayed about home nearly all the time this day - Received my trunk and keg of specimens from Chillicothe this morning. Nov 13th Saturday I stayed about home all this day except a little time in the afternoon when I went up the creek about a mile and found a species of Anodenta and the Unio Radentus.

15 Yellow bud creek Ohio

Darius returned from Chillicothe this evening. Nov 16th Sunday This morning I took a walk with Darius up the line of the canal to where it encounters a high bluff bank. This is about two miles above the yellow bud; the bank exhibits some handsomely stratified alluvion very much resembling the strata of sandstone. Brought home some unio from the river among which is Shell Crasus - Father returned from Lancaster this evening.

Nov 17th Monday Spent most of the time today with Father on the job. Darius went to Chillicothe. Nov 18th Drew a plan of the Yellow Bud Aqueduct copied from the one given by the Engineer 19th Wednesday Finished the plan above mentioned and stayed about home nearly all the time. 17 Yellow-Bud Creek

...house Dariuses [sic] trunk which he sent from Chillicothe - the rest of the time was spent in reading the Edinburgh Encyclopedia & writing some articles from his book of memorandums - he returned this evening. Nov 22d Saturday Considerable rain fell during the night and in the morning it changed to snow - which continued to fall during the day. Stayed at home of course.
