I met Mr. Henry & Mr. Taylor there and we came home together about 10 o'clock at night. A society has been formed in Louisville called the 'Louisville Colonisation Society' and is auxilliary to the Am. Col. Society at Washington. March 24th 1829 This forenoon I went down to the wharf to see a newly built...

...steamboat called the 'Uncle Sam' which has just made its first trip from Pittsburgh where it was built. She's of the largest class; the engine and other parts are of the most splendid construction. I saw on her a machine for lowering freight into the hole and raising it out of a new construction or rather combination. It consists of a common wheel and axel with the axel connected to another axel by cog wheels which increases the power 9/50

After this I went on the commons between this place & Portland for the purpose of collecting some shells which are found among decayed logs &c scattered over the fields. Here I found a few species of Helix or snail. On the second bank of the river I happened to come near a small pond of water on the bank of which among the weeds that were drifted there I found two or three species of Planorbus the Soymnet Heterostropha, the Cychas Similes and several other species of aquatic shells of which I do not know the...

Done some work on the canal in the afternoon at the bridge where they have commenced laying stone. Wed. March 25th 1829 I spent most of my time to-day at work on the canal - setting stakes for rock cutting at the lower end and attending to the laying out of the patterns for the eliptic arch in the...

...bridge. This is done with a trammel and the joints of the voissures are got by bisecting the angle formed by lines drawn from the foci and intersecting each other on the perifery [sic]. March 26th Mr. Henry has been to Louisville every day since Saturday last as a wittness [sic] in a suit which has been deferred from day to day until this time when it was put off until the last day of the court. I went up the canal in the forenoon and...

...continued my walk to the upper end where I found some shells in on the mud in the canal just below the surface of the water. I brought home some of them alive and put them in a tin cup of water which I boiled. The animal was then taken from the shell with a pin bent in the form of hook. There are however some species of helix which cannot be got from their shell in this way as they immediately draw themselves so far into the...

...shell on being touched that cannot be reached with the hook. Fryday March 27th I worked all this forenoon on the canal measuring the rock now remaining in it at the lower end which is to be excavated by P.J. Baldwin in the afternoon - Mr. Henry went to Louisville to carry the estimates and I spent the time in my room making the calculations of the rock measured in the forenoon.

At evening I received a letter from Pazzie saying that he wants me ot get him a situation at some printing office in Louisville. March 28 After doing some work on the bridge I went on to Louisville and found no situation for Pazzi. The fields begin to look green. March 29 This after noon I went over to Rock Island with Mr. Taylor and got several specimens of shells.

The weather which for a few days back has been so smoky as almost to obscure the sun, changed last night to rainy. The rain continues the greater part of the day. Monday March 30 1829 The rain has ceased and the day is fair. I went down to Portland this morning to get some castings that were there belonging to the canal and on the way I observed that the [Elur?] was in flower or had commenced flowering.
