[England], 1777. Collection of recipes (numbered 1-253 with many errors) for alchemical and practical applications such as making candles, butter, varnish, many types of ink (including a recipe for "magic ink", p. 201), sealant for waterproofing shoes (p. 15), cement for mending broken china or glass (p. 205), and occasional medicinal uses such as preventing yellow fever (p. 158). Alchemical recipes include instructions for turning white sapphires into diamonds (p. 208), creating artificial diamonds (p. 193) and artificial pearls (p. 206), creating a powder that burns green (p. 160), and how to give new colors (p. 85) or new fragrances (p. 87) to flowers. Other instructions include a method for preserving animals such as dogs and horses at the size they were at birth (p. 183), purifying water (p. 15), sending secret letters written on the inside of an egg (p. 185-186), how to wash fleecy hosiery (p. 191), and predicting whether a sick person will live or die (p. 135). A printed clipping for how to grow radishes has been pasted in (p. 118) and a print of a plan for a smelting furnace has been laid into the manuscript. Also includes an alphabetical index (p. v-xxviii) and 7 leaves laid into the manuscript with additional recipes such as a remedy for scurvy and a recipe for iron gall ink. One leaf written in French for a recipe for magic ink (Gibraltar, 15 May 1795).

193 234 Artificial Glass Rx [?] [?] - powder finely upon a Porphyry ^or [?] Common Sand [?] [?] Moisten it with Water & grind finely - Mix all together in a clean Basan [sic[ & make it a soft paste with Gum Water Then [?] [Small? smelt?] or [Larger? Lather?] finely powdered & moisten it with Gum Water to a thin paste. Put some [?] into another Pan, & moisten it with Gum Water & put some of the above White Mass to it in such Proportion that the Blue does not prevail.

{sidebar - illegible name} 265. Artificial Diamonds Rx Boron [?] Fine white sand [?] reduce both to a white Powder, & melt them in a long Crucible in a Wind Furnace, in a strong Fire for 1/2 an Hour when cold break it

236 The best Black Ink Rx a Quart of Rain or River Water, pitit into a strong Stone or Glass Bottle with a narrow Mouth to keep out the Dust. Bruise 4 oun of the best blue Alleppo Galls which are stronger than the [?] 2 oun of [Copperos?] green. 2 oun of clean & bright Gun Arabic Rock Allum 4 Drams of Rock Allum

196 Shake or stir well every Day. In a Month it will be good Ink. The longer you keep this Ink the better it will be for use Put a little salt to it & will not mould

237 Fine Japan Ink A quart of Rape Vinegar, put into a strong b=Bottle with a narrow Mouth put in Gum Arabic & Roman Vitriol of each 4 Drams; Smyrna Galls well bruised 4 ounces. Set the Bottle in a warm Place shake often, till the Liquor is black - Then add 4 Drams of Ivory Black & 2 large Spoonfulls of Seed [?] Varnish & it will be a curious shining Ink

238 Good Red Ink A Pint of stale Beer. 2 ounces of Brazil Wood ground to Powder, 2 Pennyworth of Cochineal - 2 oz of Rock Allium. & 1 oz of Gum Arabic Boil gently for 1/2 an hour, Strain thru Flannel, bottle close for use
