THE ART GALLERY
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AT COLLEGE PARK

29 August 1996

David C. Driskell

Dear David:

I thought it would be useful to provide you with a brief summary of what’s been
accomplished over the summer in relation to the 1998 exhibition of your collection and work. I’m
sure you will have much mail on your desk when you arrive back from Maine, so I will keep this
to the essentials.

1. Michelle Kloss, the art history grad student working with me this summer, completed a great deal of work and left for her fall teaching obligation on August 16. I have asked the Dean for additional graduate student assistance to oversee the year-long work on the production of the catalogue and the traveling of the exhibition. Michele Eastman contacted me and suggested a meeting with her, you, Juanita, and myself to clarify tasks and staffing. I believe Michele will be setting up that meeting.

2. A revised prospectus and budget have been prepared. Copies are enclosed.

3. We have received phone calls and/or letters from the following museums expressing serious interest in hosting the exhibition: Newark Museum; Portland Museum of Art; Baxter Gallery, Maine College of Art; Albany Museum of Art, Albany, GA; Elvehjem Museum of Art, U. of Wisconsin, Madison; California Afro-American Museum, L.A.; Georgia Museum of Art, Athens; Colby College Museum of Art.

We also had a “maybe” response from Rusty Freeman at Cheekwood; they are undergoing renovations, so he wasn’t sure. And we got a letter from Kevin Grogan at Fisk who declined because of lack of space—just as you indicated would happen.

We will need to provide working checklists to potential venues in September, and develop a schedule, including the length of time you and your family are willing to loan the artworks. Museums are booking for 98 and 99 right now, so we will need to move on this
fairly quickly. We need to communicate with those to whom we will NOT be able to send the show, too. The following is a tentative schedule for us to think about:
1. February-April 1998 The Art Gallery at UMCP
2. June - July 1998
3. September - October 1998
4. December - February 1998-99
5. April - May 1999
6. July - August 1999
7. October - November 1999
