So I'm not interest in doing code for either at this time. In fact I wish Atari would just go away, since it's

- just a cheap copy of a Mac

- uses DRI software, unstandard basic

- offers no special graphics or sounds

And while the Amiga is a strong home machine, that market won't get turned on till CD-ROM ignites it.

But for now I have to get on with something that does matter. Namely hard copy output from works. I want to learn about that & do it. And I would like to see someone create a home PC with CD-ROM, graphics & sound built around MS-DOS, so that one standard can prevail. Maybe Amiga or Atari is doing that now.

10:15 Misc housework. Failla calls. Go get cat food & ice cream. Have ice cream & orange chocolate. Do mail. Misc.

8:30 Go to work. Work on colors & lower right intersection of scrollbars, and less flicker when changing apps.

7:00 Go home. Make & eat dinner. Ice cream too. Watching Stripes, do laundry and soak lenses in enzyme cleaner.

9:00 Read "Computer Shopper" watching Dynasty. Get groceries. Make notes on prices from "Computer Shopper."

12:00 Go to bed

5:00 See AUS demo. Not much. Get Mac Word 3.0 file format. That is great.

7:00 Dinner at Ray. Finish last week's Info World. Do variosu organizational stuff. Resync, remake, but problem with CM.H.

11:30 Go home & to bed.

7:00 J10 & get up, misc. Read WSJ. Mom calls. I tell they got me at bad time Tuesday, but mom says dad says don't worry about it, if cannot go.

9:30 Haircut w/Chaika. Get cash at Rainier Bank. Call Mastercard to ask whether I should have gotten new card yet.

11:00 Do yesterday's mail, paperwork. QFC & Bartells.

12:00 Make & eat lunch. Very good w/wine & ice cream. Read ~ Clarion. Misc.

1:15 Go to work.

1:45 Reread MAC WORD 3.0 file format. Categorize all work *.h files per app. Study WP *.h & word.h. Make list of works WP vs MAC WORD 3.0 features.

6:45 Quick dinner.

7:30 Read WP spec, playing with demo.

9:45 Look at Tony's changes to wksplit.c

10:30 "Make" documentation (search & read). Search for dec on all other tools in WW\BIN. Got em all even if I don't know 'em all. Resync DOSENV & WINENV.

11:30 Recover disk space from old WKS files.

12:00 Go home

9:00 Got up. Waffles.

11:15 Go to work. Compare PC Word 3.1's *.h with Works WP x.h. But not very similar so when I got to STRUCT FLI, I decided to start reading formatting (of C Words), which I did.

2:45 Lunch at Yankee Diner

3:30 Try to read more of Format Line but didn't retain much of it. Call Jorge. Decide I should study Works format line since its simpler and I have access to all supporting routines like Fetch CP, CachePara, etc

4:30 Go home. Do mail. Bill F calls. Decide on movie. Misc house work.

7:00 Go pickup Bill. Go to Rountable. Ice cream Sundae at my place. Go see Little Shop of Horrors. Maple bar at Winchells. Listening to 60 Shits, go to Encore, see some old Portland friends of Bills. Go to Tugs. Talk with friend, dance. Take Bill home.

2:00 Go to sleep.

3:30 Go home, feeling relieved. I now havfe a plan to approach by. Wine & coffee before & after good dinner

4:45 Go to Bill Etnier's 40th.

5:00 Have a very nice time with Moussi-Man & his friend from Alaska studying landscape architecture at UW. Bill F, Bob B (wearing leather a la Little Shop of Horrors), Capp, Buck M, Henry K, Peter Hiatt, Bill Morgan, nice looking crowd. Maybe had 4 glasses of wine.

7:45 Walk home, felt drunk. Too late & undignified for church.

8:00 Mistake: finished off coffee.

8:30 Drive to Tugs, short line outside. Talked with Jim Applegate & "Eve." Bought 1 glass of wine. Met Jim T (24) from Microsoft. Someone buys me glass of wine. Then Pat Yearby shows up. Single again. He's so cute & Irish looking. We play pinball a while.

10:30 Start to leave.

11:00 Tubs. I couldn't resist. I was up for "high old time." Relax in tub w/Dave Scholingberg. But I couldn't really get it up in steam room. So I walked around. Some big ones! Then ran into Red Carrow. Bunks.

12:15 Go home. Shower.

12:30 Take Unisom. Go to bed. Didn't sleep well due to coffee, but OK.

6:45 Mom calls. Grandma died. Felt embarrassed about tubs. Remembered her when I was a boy. Her voice! Playing checkers. Got alll info from mom & dad. Flights. Misc.

9:00 Didn't feel bad in tubs, but then I hadn't had a bad time. Maybe last 2 trips have been for meeting Rob Carroll? He seems to be on my wave length.

9:15 Read WSJ.

9:30 Go to work. Study wpfetch.c. Miscellaneous organizational stuff. Talk w/Tony on schedule.

5:00 Go home. Grocery shop. Wash jeans in hot water at soap laundry. Two loads of wash at home. Dick Van Dyke. Make & eat dinner. Do mail. Housework.

8:00 Mark finally calls. At airport. But I am tired. I want to relax. He wouldn't be in town till 9:00. He should get his feet on the ground. So we plan to see each other tomorrow.

Have French vanilla & sauce. Read misc news letters while laundry dries.

10:00 Go to bed.

1:30 Had to figure out hyphenation, turning to PC Word 3.1 doc, and ended up reading entire reference manual. I had read tutorial & using guide before.

Wed 1/28

4:30 Fix bugs in last version. Misc. Read Infoworld. Works scheduling meeting with everyone, even Jeff, Jabe.

5:30 Leave for dinner at Poor Italian with Mark T. Nice evening.

7:00 Go home. Dinner, reading Infoworld.

Why Works!

Realize (from Robert Corr's column) that adds on 286 won't

1) Allow current programs to break 640K

2) Allow current programs to run simultaneously or even switch

In fact there's no protected means on 80/86 (or 286) to run more than 1 program at a time. They all assume they have the machine to themselves. This is why wyou don't see people using 1-2-3 and a real WP at the same time. This is the reason for Works. Works allows as much ability as possible to be integrated and run with reasonable amt of space left for documents, and within 640K limits.
