However, I think that has to do with ratio of Commodore 64's to Atari 400/800's. January "Compute!" buyer guide to paint programs showed 3 times as many for Atari ST as for Amiga.

But it seems that the dominant one is still in dispute, from reading article in one magazine, so I look at books. About equal number on Atari ST as on Amiga...(No Atari 400/800 books...) It seems they may both have their niche in what they do well.

Atari is cheaper, and doesn't have graphics coprocessor or Microsoft basic, but does have Dri Gem, Logo and Basic. (Maybe that's why we don't like Tramiel). And runs at 15% faster clock. And supposedly has good RGB monitor. But can't use it hi-res. And supposedly more software (quality?).

Amiga has better graphics due to its graphics coprocessor, which makes it faster for graphics, despite slower clock. It can do 16 colors even in 640 x 400! It is somewhere between 520 ST & 1040 ST having "only" 512K, but internal disk, and power supply.

In short, the Atari 520 ST is a very poor mans Macintosh, while the 1040 is a chintzy guy's Macintosh, which may someday get a graphics coprocessor.

But the Amiga is a true home computer since it is advanced video and audio capabilities. And it has the power supply inside, and disk too. And Microsoft has endorsed it by means of Amiga Basic & an MS-Press book. It's fine to compare these two, but the upshot is that the ST does nothing more than the Mac, in fact less, but it costs less. The Amiga adds recreational features, key for home buyers, but that market is weak, at least now at current prices.
