Trenches 1917 Ap. 8 cont. heavy barrage on his own front line and "No Man's Land" Several enemy aircraft have been seen today patrolling in rear of his front line. About 9.40 am one approached our front line, but was driven back by our A.A. Guns. Our strength return for the 8th showed forty four officers and eleven hundred and thirty five OR. -- of which fourteen officers and one hundred and ninety eight are with "Details." Weather very wet. RBO'S

Trenches 9 Batt. in trenches as previously stated, until 8.35 when the charge was made. See appendix. The attack was made in four waves with a total strength in the waves of 12 officers and 550 O.R. There were, in addition, the Commanding Officer and six other officers at Battalion Headquarters, the R.S.M. 3 orderly Room Clerks, 14 Signallers, 16 runners, 5 medical staff in Blue Bull Tunnel. During this day, three officers and 60 other ranks, specialists, were ordered up from Chateau de la Haie, these taking part in subsequent operations. See appendix "Battle of Vimy Ridge" RBO'S

Front Lines 1917 Ap 10 Batt. in Front lines - Lieut Jarvis Wounded. LtCol Edwards D.S.O goes to England, wounded, Battle proceeding.
artillery has been quite active, firing on the Claude Trench along S.15 a 7 1/2 to S.9.c.1. Our Brigade Machine guns were quite active, firing from crater no 5 at S.15-c 9 14 with direct fire on CLUTCH TRENCH and road at S.15 G-6.8. Battalion Machine guns were also active along these points and also firing on the Claude Trench. There was considerable sniping also at last named points. Our aircraft flew well over the enemy line this morning while observation was possible. A new enemy battery was active firing from the northeast of no. 5 crater, quite a few shells lighting on this vicinity, also dropping a few shells along our old line from 8.14.d.g.4. to S.14.G.8.4. a few shellings dropping in the rear of this. A light battery located firing on our new position from S.15.a.5.3. to S.15.g.1.5. Our artillery were advised of this and attention is being paid to it. There was some enemy machine gun fire from the

Original Confidential War Diary month april 1917 ---- Place -- Date -- Hour -- Summary of Events and Information -- Remarks and references to Appendices ---- Front Line -- 1917 Ap. 11 cont -- vicinity of 5.9.c. 9 1/4.1. There was considerate sniping during the afternoon in the vicinity of CLAUDE TRENCH S.15.9. 8.7 1/4. Enemy's air machine was seen flying over our line about 10. a.m. There seems to have been a [minnou heffer?] position about 5.15. a.8.5 but owing to the [?] activity in sniping along this point, investigation has not yet been possible. -- RBOS

Front Line -- 12 -- Our artillery has been active firing along CLAUDE TRENCH from 5.15. a 8.7 1/4 to 5.9.c.9.1. also firing on enemy batteries at 5.9.d.9 4/4. Our trench [?] were active along CLAUDE TRENCH from 5.9.c. 9.4. to 5.15.a.8 1/4.7: - Our Louis guns had a chance for some active firing on some Germans who were trying to break through from CLAUDE Trench at 5.15.a.8 1/4.7. Enemy were seen to fall as a result of this fire. Our snipers were also busy accounting for several Huns at the above mentioned points. Several of our aircraft were seen, apparently doing country battery work. Corpl. Redford and two men [charging?] messages got lost in the snowstorm and wandered down through into Givench. They did not encounter any Huns

Front Line 1917 Ap. 12 cont although flares were seen coming from points on each side of them. Private Nunny also got off his bearings when going out to post at junction of CYPRUS and CLUCK, wandering across tot he railway track. He came across several Bosches whom he called upon to surrender. These turned and ran. When he struck the light railway track, he went along it to where it crosses contour 110 at s.15.a.9.7. He saw Boches in CLAUDE TRENCH at this point. He then came into junction of CYRUS and BABY. He reported that the Huns were putting up flares from what appeared to be CLUNY Trench at s9.c.4.1 1/2 and along this locality also. His flares were going up in CLUCK Trench from S.15.b.6.7. The Boche seem to be holding this locality with Machine guns. During the attack of the 10th Brigade this morning, the Boches only put a few shells along our sector, some of them being duds. During the day his artillery was quiet with the exception of a few shells just over towards the Crater, and a little shrapnel. His machine guns were active firing

Front Line 1917 Ap. 12 cont. from direction of Minnen? Weffer Lager. There was some sniping done from the direction of CLAUDE and CLUCK. RBO'S

do 13 Batt. still in Front Lines, but were relieved in the course of the day, going to huts in Chateau de la Haie, where a first rate hot dinner had been provided for them by Major Ower, Quartermaster. Weather was mild but great drifts of snow showed at different places by the roadside. RBO'S

Chateau de la Haie 14 Batt. moved from Chateau de la Haie to Coupigny in the afternoon. Hercin received several Hun shells. Very wet with rain and snow alternating. RBO'S

Compigny 15th Batt in coupigny huts. O.R. were paraded to the baths in Hersin throughout the day. From the baths they were paraded for pay and received from Capt. O'Sullivan double pay, he having made arrangements with the Field Cashier for same. During the course of pay, German shells fell frequently in the vicinity, and the involuntary ducking of their heads y the men, as the shells passed over showed very plainly the nervous tension of the preceeding week.
