MSS-Psalter. Italy: ca. 1350 3 3/8 x 5"

Written in an Italian gothic hand on fine vellum, in Latin, c brown ink c headlines, paragraph marks + underlining in red. 34 lines. The 7 sign is uncrossed + the a is uniformly unical.

The main types of psalms in the Psalter are as follows: hymns, laments (the most frequent_ and thanksgivings.

Teh Psalter from the 9th to the 13th C. was the prayer book of the faithful. Gradually it acquired many of the elements which were to become components of the Book of [?Hours?]. Its readings in entirety, daily at first + then weekly. was a fundamental part of the Benedictine Rule that ultimately gave rise to the procedures of worship of the canonical Hours which became the basis of both communal + private devotions. It usually contained other hymns than the Psalms themselves, the songs from both the Old + New Testaments called the Canticles, as well as texts spoken in concert, like the Apostles' creed. All the 150 psalms were recited in the course of each week + most of them were said at the Hours of Matin + Vespers. Matins on Sunday began with Psalm 1, on Monday c Psalm 26 on Tuesday c Psalm 52 on Thursday c Psalm 68 on Friday c

Psalm 80 on Saturday c Psalm 97; the cycle for Vespers began on Sunday c Psalm 109 + continued throughout the week c the remaining Psalms.

The psalter ultimately became one of the most popular devotional books of the Middle Ages. Because of their religious significance, books containing the psalms, including Bibles, breviaries + books of hours, were frequently decorated lavishly.

The 1st ed. c this title was published in 1535. Rosslin (who sometimes used the Greek form of his name, Rhodion) succeeded his father as city physician at Frankfurt in 1526.

In 1533 c. Egenolph issued revised versions of Der Gart + Brunschwig's Destillier buch in one publication (Nissen #1667) The text at that time was edited by Rosslin. On Rosslin's death the herbal portion of the work was reedited by Theodore Dorsten + entitled the Botanicon.

Both of these publications were brought together, reedited + combined c Adam Lonitzer's own contributions in 1557 as the Kreutterbuch (Nissen #1227). Lonitzer became Egenolph's son-in-law in 1553 + thus became one of the heirs to teh Egeholph publishing hourse a highly valuable 16th C property. In fact, from its 1st appearance in 1533 as Rosslin's herbal the Kruetterbuch enjoyed good sales + repeated printings until 1783, a run of 250 years.

elder -- E. Roslin became apothecary of Freiburg in 1493. In 1506 he was elected physician to the city of Frankfurt + in 1508 he entered the servia at the court of Katherine, Duchess of Saxony + Brunswick. It is to her he dedicated his "Der Schwangein Frawen und Hebammer Rosegarten" 1st published at Strassburg in 1513. (1st vernacular + the 1st illustrated manual of midwifery).
