Farfel Notebook 09: Leaves 572-618

Wynkyn de Worde, who succeeded to Caxton's press + material published very little during the 1st few years, being content c a few reprints. In 1495, he issued a translation of the Vitae Sanctorum Patrum of Jerome. This translation was the work of Caxton + was only finished, as de Worde writes in the colophon, on the last day of his life. It was rendered from the French edition printed at Lyons in 1486 (Goff H214); but, as might have been expected, it attained little popularity + was never reprinted

(ca. 1422-1491) Caxton at the age of 70 was at work on his 2nd longest translation, Vitas patrum, a collection of lives of the Desert Fathers, wrongly ascribed to St. Jerome. This manuscript was Caxton's own property + nothing could be done with it until his affairs were settled which took some time. De Worde published it at the earliest possible moment after Caxton's death.

de Worde did not put his name to any book before 1494.

The last leaf xx^6 is occupied by a large woodcut of Caxton's device, such as he used in work issued after 1487 + which was adopted by de Worde in his earlier productions. E. Hodnett - 87x67mm series 800 to 839. #822. A woman seated under a canopy instructing a little girl c a book. A man praying.

The woodcuts made for the Latin Bible printed by J. Sacon in 1512 were copied from Venetian illust. which in part date back to the celebrated

Mortima Italian #57

Malermi Bible of 1490, printed by Giovanni Ragazzo for Luci Antonio Giunta (Goff B-644). The 1490 Bible, an Italian translation by Niccolo Malermi, was the prototype for a succession of illust. Bibles of the early 16th C.

Sacon was the 1st of the Lyons printers to have the Giunta blocks copied + his model was the Giunta 4^0 bible (Latin) of 1511 which contains the 15th C*

Bible. Biblia (ed. Alberto da Castello) 4^0 in 12's Venice, Luc' Antonio Guinta, 5 cal June, 1511. 144 cuts (including 16 repetitions. 32x21mm to 185x127mm 27 of these blocks are signed "b", 2 "F", 3 "L" + 2 "C". Many of the O.T. blocks are from the 1490 ed. of N. Malermi's Italian translation of the Bible printed for Luc' A. Guinta by Biovanni Ragazzo. The O.T. blocks are printed within floral borders.

5th Giunta Bible listed by Sander (Vol. 1 no. 999) The 4 Giunta Bibles from 1490 to 1507 were all Italian text.

ruled in red, the pointing is in black, catchwords, gold rosettes between verses. The script is notable for the extreme extension of the loops, which lands the script a particularly strong thrust to the left.
