a-x10 yz A-C8 D-N10p10 Q8 RS10T8V10 415 leaves the 1st + last blank. 3a: 50 lines. 278x158mm Types: 115 (111) R; 115 Gk Capital spaces with guide letters -Large text type. Single Qu; medium capitals, rather broad H, the shanks of N are not quite vertical, S is irregularly drawn, single sloping hyphen. Up to 1474 the measurement of 20 lines varies from over 115 to just under 113mm - in and after 1475 it is reduced to 111-112mm. The type was used exclusively until 1473 + occasionally afterwards. 115 G k - lower case only. 1st used in 1471 + regularly used afterwards. Pliny - one of the few Romans who wrote on science. in the 1st book he acknowledges about 500 authors as sources of his information. Total, 36 books. Together with Vitruvius' De architectura, Pliny's work is one of the few extant testimonies to the flowering of art criticism + art historical study in the Roman period.

Book 10 - The Natural History of Binds. Pliny - an encyclopedia of all the knowledge of the ancient world. He was a compiler rather than an origional thinker - 37 books - was the basis of Isidore's Etymologiae + such medieval encyclopedias as the Speculum Majus + the Catholicon. - "Jenson's roman Types have been the accepted models for roman letters ever since he made them, + repreatedly copied in our own day" - Updike Cap. First ed. in any modern language of the greatest general scientific, encyclopedic work of antiquity which profoundly affected men's thought for 1500 years or more. The date of this translation by the leading Florentine humanist Landino (1424-1492) doesn't seem to be widely known, but it must have been between 1458, when Ferdinand assumed the throne, + the date of this volume.
