Javanese manuscript on paper. (imported, Dutch made) History of Rama - 19th C. folio 35? (13.2x23.4) p. 198? 20.7x32.6 cm. (written from left to right) Pl #98 See Maggs Bulletin 40 #80 22 lines, written in black ink, ruled, rendered into modern Javanese from Kavi, the old literature of the island which consisted largely of Hindu mythology, modifies + localized by patriotic seribes. Modern Javanese, famous for the neatness of its script, is written beneath the ruled lines, not above them + bears a striking similarity to Western script turned upside-down.

Javanese - spoken in the central + eastern parts of Java, the most populous island of the Republic of Indonesia - it has 75 million speakers. The traditional Javanese script is of ancient origin (early inscriptions date from 8th C. AD) having been brought to Java from southern India - one of the major literatures of Asia, Javanese has been influenced 1st by Sanskrit, then from the 15th C onwards by Arabic + finally since about about 1600 by Dutch script - Javanese, Old (Karvi) - the language reaches its apogee in the rich output of creative literature + recreation of Sanskrit originals which continued from the 10th to the 15th C. literature 1) Recensions of parts of the Mahahhanata the longest epic poem in the world - western Indian epic. 2)Didactic fables.

3) Narrative texts - these combine myth + history of the Javanese people ed. the Pararaton - an account of the Majapahit Dynasty, Rama the hero of the Ramayana -eastern Indian epic (Daseratha's son) an epic of ancient India; is the figure most celebrated in literature, music + art throughout India + Southeast Asia. Attributed to the sage Valiki, it is a poem of about 50,000 lines narrating in Sanskrit the take of Rama + his wife Sita - consists of 7 books called Kandas - Old Javanese was used in Java for literary compositions from the 11th to the 16th C + was continued + adopted in Bali for the composition of kakawin literature - Old Javanese epic + romantic poetry written in Indian kavya metres. This style, complete with many (Javanese) stylistic embellishments, qas the result of the very strong influence of Indian court culture on Java in the pre-Islamic period up to c. 1300. The so called Kakawin (compositions of poets; poems) from such a conspicuous part of Old Javanese literature that the language in which they were written was called kawi after them. They were the earliest texts were to be printed.

219 leaves, the last 2 blank, also the recto of leaf 97 which the printer appears to have accidently passed over. 4a: 35 lines. 182x105mm. 3 to 5 line spaces for capitals, many with printed guides. Two pinholes Type: 103 - roman text type with the peculiar R form which the press is named

Ouvrage de philosophie et de morale qui rassemble un grand numbre de citations tirees des auteins de l'antiquite par le predicateur - preacher et humaniste Jaques Legrend. - This popular work of philosophy + theology by Jacques Legrend, an Augustinian Hermit went through well over a dozen editions in the 15th C. Maggs Cats 816 #91 - The Sophologium is a kind of classified commonplace book, the materials of which have been got together from philosophers, theologians, poets + orators, + include subjects of medical + scientific interest. The work was translated by W. Caxton under the title of "The Book of Good Manners." + printed at Westminster in 1487 (Duff #248)

HEHL #91533 ub. in red A) my leaf q2 (of 8) marked folio 138 B) " " q6 (of 8) " " 144 both leaves are part of Capitula tractus querti. libri secundi I-XXVii De negligencia + pigricia laziness XXIII De castitate integrity + pudicia virtue XXIIII De luxuria extravagance, vitanda XXV De uoluptate carnis XXVI De inuidia XXVII - Capitulum tractatus quarti libri tercii This compilation is to Ethics wat the Gesta Romenorum + the Promptuarium of Herott are to Religion - a great + well organized storehouse, wherein are to be found fables origionally manufactured to order, nut now passing current by virtue of a certain degree of antiquity and so ticketed + labelled that there is no virtue which shall now here find its adequate + cleverly unshrined reward, no vice which must go a-begging for an overwhelming + melodramatic retribution. One tractate is devoted to the evil ways of the clergy. See medden in his "Letters d'un Bibliophile." -Rusch's font of the "bizzar R" used as early as 1464 was the 1st Roman letter used anywhere. He printed some 15 books in his roman type + than procured a semigothic font. - Legrand's Sophologium - outlines the duties + principles of conduct of each branch of society. (Written in 1404).
