Cessolis interprets the pieces of a single side as representing the stations of society: the 5 major pieces embody their actual roles - king, queen, knight, judge (the modern bishop) + king's deputy (the modern rook) - while the 8 pawns are represented as woodsman blacksmith, wool merchant, money changer, doctor, innkeeper, watchman + a water-carrier.

Neither Statiusnon Ausonius produced more musical hexameters or expressed their feeling for natural beauty in phrases marked t more spontaneous grace ... What is remarkable about the Greek + Latin poetry of Politianus is that the flavour of the author's Italian style transpired in them. They are no mere imitations of the Classics. The reseat fluency of the Rime reappears in these prolusiones making it manifest that the 3 languages were used t equal facility. Poliziano, the great Florentine humanist, was a friend + teacher of Lorenzo de' Medici. As this ed of his collected works, translations, + correspondence shows, he had achieved universal knowledge in all branches of scholarship known in his time. Poliziano's Miscellanea is a loosely joined series of conjectures on classical topics + texts set forth something in the style of the Elegantiae of his teacher, Valla, his only equal during the 15th c. philologists. Renowed as a poet in both Italian + Latin, Poliziano was tutor to the Medici children and an important figure in the circle of Neoplatonists in Lorenzo's court. Probably the 1st European to command ancient Greek. The 100 chapters of the Miscellanea are arranged Topically. The present ed. is the 1st collected works of Poliziano printed by Aldus. The author was one of the greatest figures of the Italian Renaissance, "chiefly memorable for the bridge which he built between the achievements of Petrarch + Boccaccio on the one side + Ariosto + Tasso on the other" The present collection contains Politian's classical translations + original Greek + Latin poems, not his writings in the vernacular. It contains the 1st specimen of Hebrew type used by Aldus (f. H8n).
