The art of writing was one of Italy's greatest gifts to the modern world. Out of hundreds of scripts that preceded printing , one , the italic of the Papal Chancery came to dominate teh style of writing all over Europe , (outside Germany) & turned it from craft into art.
York - 4th place in England to have a press. - earliets surviving book to bear a York imprint - 1507 by Gerard Wanseford (actually printed at Rouen) 1st actually printed in York - 1509/10 - Hugo Goes (a Belgian) at Stonegate St.

Brownigg Rubrication - 4 main features - initials, underlining, paragraph marks & marks on capitals' ("initial strokes") others - the text of headings within the text area & the headlines , the foliation or leaf numbering , the painting in of outline woodcut initials, and connecting lines & brackets . rare - purely decorative red rule lines around the text area & sometimes between every line , reference symbols linking together elements of printed text, marginal notes & quite raw, line fillers. in general copies of same book are not identically rubricated.
p.19 Franciscn Literature - Women exercised a far greater "influence" over the development of the medieval romance as "readers" than as writers. A courtly audiences , largely female in its composition, was the self conscious arbiter of taste in important literary centers throughout Europe. Women were likewise the defing audience for much late medieval religfious literature.
