One of the finest illustrated books of the Italian Renaissance. All woodcut material appears in this ed. for the 1st time. No artist has been identified, but more than one Ferrsrese hand is likely to have been responsible for the portraits. Type 105 G large square text type, mostly with medium capitals. Q is seperate. Peculair + very small loop. bold single sloping hyphen. in use 1497-99. Dutch + Flemish woodcuts of the 15 C London 1925. p, 40-44 BMC Christian Snallaert (Delft) the earliest book atributable to this press is the unsigned L. de Saxonia, Vita Chrisi, 22 May 1488. THough Snellaert's name is not met with after 11 Aug 1496, the press was active in the following year 1497. On 9 Jan. 1498 its material was already in the hands of Hendrik Eckect. To Snellaert are attributed some 70 books. Procta #8881 - Types 1, 3, 4, *. ab8 c-f6 g8 h-z6 z6 o6 A-L6 aa-nn6 oo4. -Ludolphus's spiritual text became very popular in the 15th C. + influenced Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ. -This Dutch text is not the literal translation of Ludolphus that it claims to be. A companion of the Dutch + Latin texts receals some curious discrepancies. Ludolphus's Vita Christi is more formal in tone, + it is not a dialogue. It contains extensive quotations of specific sources, moreover, that occur no where in the Dutch book. Athought the subjects of the 175 chapters in the Dutch version generally correspond to the 181 chapters of the Vita Christi, only the concluding prayers of each chapter can be called "free translations" of the Latin. Dutch versions. The meditational character of this unjustly ignored intimate book corresponds to the personal tone of much of the literature of the Devotio Moderna. As James Marrow noted, the increased use of the vernacular in this period encouraged the pious to write their own accounts of Christ's life as a means of expressing their devotion. THis Dutch book, which appeared in at least 11 ed. in less than 50 yrs, seems to have been one of the most successful of these personal interpretations Schreiber Woodcuts C. Snellaert incurred no great expense for his new works. In his Ludolphus published in 1488 there are bad copies from the ed. printed by Leeu in Antwerp Polain 2543 40, 298 ffnc. Car. goth. 3 grand. Tris gros car. 2 col. 3911. Sig a8 b8 c-f6 g8 h-z6 76 A-L6 aa-mm6 oo4. Gravures + bordures. Vita Christi - presents the life of Christ as an example + symbol of the llife of man. Each chapter is conclueded with a short summary prayer - one source for Vita - The Speculum hummanae salvationis.

CCCLX - Buglsfaum vulgere - Common or Garden Buglosse (woodcut 6"x8 5/8") Ochaen zung - ox tongue Mattioli's fame speread rapidly, + in 1555 he was summoned to Prague by the Emperor Ferdinand I to treat his son, the Archduke Maximilian. Here he remained for more than 23 yrs, + here too, was first published the vast folio ed. of his Commentarii, with large woodcut illustrations + Czech text (Girkii Malantryka, 1562.) Seven further ed. followed between 1562 + 1604 with texts in Ref: Grasse IV p. 446 German, Latin + Italian, + in all the Commentarii was issued, in various formats + 5 different languages at least 45 times. The artists who made bothe the small + the large woodcuts for the Commentarii were an Italian, Giorgio Lierale of Udine, + a German named Woldgang Meyerpeck. The big set of figures is in every way immeasurably superior to the small. (Praha) - Prague - Jiri Cerny Rezdalovsky known as Melantrich. - Dioscorides was born in Anazaiba, Cilica.

Bugloss, Vipers Echium Vulgare - The common name has a complex derivation - from the Latin Buglossa, + the Greek bouglossos, meaning "ox-tongue." Echium an old Greek name meaning viper was applied to the plant at a later date p. 655 Gerard's Herbal (L597) Buglossa vulagis - Common Buglosse or garden Buglosse Buglossa - p. 141 Fuchs (1542).

The Library - 4th Series Vol. 2 (1921-22) p. 117-131. Z 671 L69 P. H. Mattioli - Commentaries on the Materia Medica (1544) The book represents the sum total of plant knowledge in Italy at that period + was widely read. The earleir editions were illust. with small woodcuts of no great artistic merit. It was no doubt Mattioli's intention to publish his "editio renovata" in Italy; but circumstances must have led him to allow the majority of the large illust. of plants to be used in the first placefor a Bohemian translation of the 1st 4 books of his work. In 1554 Mattioli went to Bohemia as physician to Archduke Ferdinand + lived in [inserted] *born in Prauge in 1525-1600. [end inserted] Prague for many years. A Bohemian named * Hagek z Hagkw undertook to translate the 1st 4 books fo the Commentaries into Bohemia. The result was the 1562 ed. of the Commentaries printed in Prague + illust. for the 1st time with large woodcuts, (initial G.S. on over 100 blocks - removal in later ed. 2nd ed. (in German) - Prague 1563. 3rd ed. Valgrisi - Venice 1565. Nissen Valgrisi used the enlarged cuts only in an Italian ed. of 1565 + a Latin one of 1570 + thenceforth employed the smaller figures again. The only portions fo the book in Latin are the Epistola nuncupatoria, a Privilega, the names of plants, + a few verses at the end. Printer - Georgius Melantrichus ab Aventino (printer of a Bohemian ed. of the Bible in 1570) printed in gothic type, + the Latin is roman. 20 unnumb. fol + 392 numb. fol. + 26 unnumb. fol. Register: *6, xx6, xxx4, xxxx4, A-Z (incl. W)6, Aa-Zz (incl. Ww)6 Aaa-Www6, Xxx4. Contains 589 of the large figures of plants, these being the 1st impressions of the bulk of the large plant figures contained in the well known Valgrisi ed. of 1565 + later. The 'first impressions' of the woodcuts were undoubtedly the best (in this ed.); more os in the case, on account of the fact that later ed. were printed on inferior paper. A system of shading the drawings in this herbal by a very skilful use of parallel lines, with occ. cross hatchings is employed + is often used with great delicacy.
