I would respectfully call your attention to the recommendations, and trust that you will see fit to grant them, as I believe that it will be to the interest of the Department and to the good of the City generally.
The Hook and Ladder Truck now held at No. 4 Company should be put in active service, for the following reasons:
Whenever a fire occurs south of the Texas and Pacific Railway Company tracks we have no ladders to work with except four short scaling ladders on No. 4 Wagon, and you will all agree with me that when ladders are needed at a fire, they are needed at the start, so that it will enable us to save lives to put out the fire without much damage by water. As it is now,

The manner in which the Department is listed can be very easily checked up and see that all names appearing on the Pay Roll are in teh actual employ of the City and that no one is or ever was on the Pay Roll that was not actually actively employed.
The Pay Roll was $2260.00 for the month of April 1900 with a possible slight variation LESS on account of some member being laid off or fined for some ciolation of the Rules and the Pay Roll for the month of January was $2260.00 with a slight amount LESS caused by some member being disciplined.
For the correctness of these statements I respectfully refer you to the books of the City Secretary and City Audito.

Some of the changes in the Roster of the Department have been reported to the City Council through the Fire Committee and all of them have been reported either in writing or verbally to the Fire Committee and my action was approved and endorsed by them.
Horses.
The horses in the Department are distributed as follows. No. 1 has 4. Chemical Co has 2. No. 2 has 2. No. 3 Co. has 4 No. 4 Co. has 4. No. 5 Co. has 2. No. 6 Co. has 2; the two trucks have 5. Supply wagon has 1. One extra horse - now sick. and one I drive myself making a total of 28 horses. The total forage bill from April to Jany 1st. 1901 is 1206.83 - against this amount was the sum of $244.60 for forage which was purchased in March and was on hands when this Honorable body took its seat -- this will leave the total bill then only $1,016.23 -- or an average of $101.62 per month of $3.69-2/7 per horse per month.
These figures were obtained from the books of the City Auditor and of course are correct. -------------------------------- ------------------------
The Repair Bill on Apparatus has not been very large but the major part of same has been caused by breakage &ct in answering alarms on fire,by the bad crossings and holes in the streets, some of which has been reported.
