Mr James Thomas Smith "Lavinia" Ship owner Deptford London SE Sir 27 Feby 1857 In reply to your letter of 24th instant on the subject of a deposit with me of the sum of £8 on the 17..... by the Agent of the General Steam Navigation Company, in respect of services rendered by certain Officers of the Coast Guard to the Vessel "Lavinia" of Deptford wrecked at ........ on the 4th .... I beg to acquaint you that the nature of those services were explained to the ...... General of the Coast Guard by Lieutenant Poynter of ...., the Chief Officer of the district who directed a decision thereof as follows viz Peter Flicker Clip B'ham £2. 13. 4 Michle Tiddy Commd B'ham 2. 2. 8 George Milne " B'ham 1. 12. 0 Fredk R. of your letter of the 28th [Ultium]. inquiring "Whether [a] [Demand] was not made on "the Master of the ["Larusia"] for £8 - attended "with a threat at the same time that if it " were not paid some of the [Stores] would be "seized at Hull for the [amount?]." And in reply have to acquaint you that I have no knowledge whatever of the circum -stance to which you allude. I was informed by Michael [Leddy] [commissioned] [Boatman] of the Coast Guard that services had been rendered by himself and men to the "[Larissia]" which had not been satisfied [a...d] that. £7 or £8 would about pay for the same. The Stores of the Vessel which had been saved were then in Hull on their way to London, I therefore called upon the Agents for the General Steam Navigation Company to desposit £8 in respect of the services in question, with which he complied. Had he declined I should have detained some article that could not have been damaged say an Anchor, or a Chain Cable. Which I am authroized to do under the 46th Section of the M. [S]. Act 1854. 75 The Marine Department "Perserverence" Board of Trade. London Art 3405. Registered 20th March 1857 Referred to Mr Farrer Capt Robertson The Receiver of Wreck. Custom House Hull As requested to procure and forward a full and explicit Report on the annexed Letter J. H. Farrer 20/3/57

In consequence of the annexed letter from Lieut Poynter Chief Officer of the Coast Guard at Patrington, dated 13th Ultim, I called upon Mes Harrison, the Importers of the Cargo of the "Perseverance" for £24.14.0.for services rendered to the Ct Gd. and in compliance with his annexed letter dated 22nd Ultim. I paid the same as thence directed and shall account for the amount in my account for the current quarter. With respect to the services rendered I am not in possession of the detail. Lieut Poynter explained their nature and extent to the Controller General of the Coast Guard who gave directions accordingly. J Sparrow C H Hull 21 March 1857 Marginalia S.
