DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1788,
1788,
July,
8, Sent 5 Quarts Brandy, the last in the Cask, for the people about Harvest. J.Taylor came here and borrowed 2 1/2 Bus Wheat. I rode with him &c C.Taylor's to Court house, where a good many met about the intended Barbecue- Some rain-
9, Sent Moses to work about Arbor which was near finished- I went there & found sundry of the neighbors were there-Several Showers- My father & J.Taylor returned from Rockingham in evening.
10, Moses went again to work about barbecue.
11, G.T. had a Lamb killed, w't 29 lbs. & sent that with a Gammon of Bacon, 14 lb to the Court house pr George & Frank. We went to the Barbecue- there was punch, wine & grog to Drink and Beef, Mutton, Lamb, Shoat, bacon, vegetables &c to eat. The day was dry & good- Near 300 Whites were there.
12, We went to C.Taylor's. Mrs Bell-Jno Bell & wife, S.Burnley and J.Taylor dined there.
13, J.Taylor & family (including T.Barbour & wife) went to Culpeper- he came here & left the Office Key and some money w'th me- Hub'd Taylor rode here and told me he had agreed to part with Jno Brookman who he hired to live with him, and said he wanted some money to pay him. I lent him 5 Dollars. C.Taylor sent a Quarter of Lamb. We dined at home-had some Cimblings for dinner- Milk & apples H.Taylor ret'd to dinner & said he expected Maj'r Willis- [Sunday]
14, C.Taylor gave Will a purge & breakfasted here. Examined the Bacon. 22 Gammons, 26 Shoulders & 26 Midlings on hand besides what was used today. Some of it got worms &c, had it washed in lye. Capt Burnley dined here- After he was gone Mrs Burnley & children, Miss Sally Bell, Polly & Sally Burnley, came here to eat Cherries, which are almost gone. A little rain at night.
15, A small shower of rain in last night, cloudy day- Plowing old & weeding new Tob'o ground. Jos Clark dined here.
16, Rained again in last night, not much- J.Clark was here to-day & intends to Fred'g to-morrow. G.Taylor gave him some letters to carry down. After dinner Mr.T.Bell came here, he wanted Turnep seed, some of which I gave him. A few cherries still on the trees.
17, C.Taylor breakfasted here & returned hom after. I received a letter from William Taylor (his brother in Ky.-WKA-) by Mr.John Obannon who had surveyed four tracts of Land of 1,000 acres each for on my Military Warrant- on North- west side of Ohio river- He brought me the plats of land- His account for Surveyor's fees- Chain Carrier & markers & exclusive of 17/- I formerly paid Col.R[ichard] C[lough] Anderson, was £
17.4.0 which I paid him & took his receipt for. He says his price for Locating is £
12. pr thousand, or 1/3 of the Land. W.T. wrote 1/4th. Mr. Obannon dined here & went to Reuben Taylor for whom he has some plats &c- John Thomas jr sent for me to examine the office. Whilst there John Taylor came to borrow a Mortgage but did not take one [Col Richard Clough Anderson- WKA-]
18, Davy, Moses & Peter Mowing Oats- Morning clear & cool- Went with my father to Uncle Taylor's, Capt Burnley & family, Mrs Burnley & daughter, Miss N.Bell, Jno Bell, were there. Rob Taylor & family got home from Caroline- J.Taylor & wife at home. There fell a small shower of rain ab't 3 o'clock.
19, Last night cool for the season- Clear morning. Went with G.T. to Muster at Court house- Hd Taylor came by and dined with us.
20, [Sunday] Went to Church- Mr.Waddill preached-went with G.T. to H.Taylor's & dined with Capt Conway & wife, Reu Taylor & family. At night heard the insect Sawyer or Cherry Derry- Weather cool, some clouds but no rain.
21, Walked to Old Peach orchard- some peaches eatable- Cut mustard seed. Two Turkeys hatched 13 young, they had set once before-
22, Uncle Taylor, John, Robert, Hubbard, Charles & Reuben Taylor & Mr Tho's Bell dined here. J.Taylor jr came for Key of office & said his father &c were returned from Culpeper-
23, Set up Garden posts on North side- Cloudy & several showers from North-east.
