Dear David,
I received an excellent letter from Keith Morrison. It speaks very highly of you. Please thank him for me. I need more letters from people who will write them. You know who these people are better than I. I tried making some phone calls but I did not get very far, except with Keith. I will need your help on this. Please ask your friends and associates to write letters in your behalf to the Distinghished Teaching of Art Award Committee for 1988 in care of the College Art Association of America. I would prefer that they send them directly to me so that I can forward them to the others on the committee. We are not going to meet in person. This makes my job a little harder since I will not be able to sit around a table with these people, I can only talk with them on the phone and exchange letters with them for my candidate, which is you.
I am writings a few letters to the people on the list you sent me of former students. I do hope you are doing fine and not "Missing something!"
All the best, Faith [signature] Faith
P.S. Just between you and me, the other people on the committee are: Bernard Chaet, Chair, Yale University and Beatrice Rivas Sanchez, President Kansas City Art Institute.

Dear Mr. Chaet,
I have tried to reach you several times by phone. I hope this letter reaches you since I have a very fine candidate whose name I would like to place in nomination for the Distinguished Teacher of Art Award for 1988. David Driskell is an art teacher, historian, critic, and artist. He has done for black artists in America what no other single person has done: given over 30 years of scholarly concentration of time and study in his hundreds of exhibitions and catalogues, lectures, and books devoted to the art of Black Americans. He has not limited himself to the art of black people, but has taught his students the history of art and has given them the universality of view that all great teachers should bring to their students. He has filled a very important void in the training of all artists. He has given a focus of attention to the art of black people; a foundation for some, a springboard for others, a source of scholarly enlightenment forstill others in a field (art) where often, most often, the artist of color is left out.
I have included a resume and bio for David, and a letter from his Chairman, Keith Morrison at University of Maryland. Several more letters from stu dents and colleagues will follow.
Sincerely, Faith Ringgold [signature] Faith Ringgold

Dear Dr. Driskell:
Last year's Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Committee did not really have the opportunity to consider you for a 1987-88 award because of our activity while you were out of the area. As I indicated in my letter of 18 February 1987, we could reactivate your nomination this fall and consider you for a 1988-89 award.
If you would be in a position to accept an award for 198889, if offered, please let me know in the near future so that the Committee may consider you this fall.
Sincerely, Gerald Ray Miller [signature] Gerald Ray Miller, Chair Distinguished Scholar Teacher Selection Committee
