The commercial date palm is thought to be the world's oldest cultivated fruit tree. Fossil records indicate that the date palm was common around the Mediterranean and in Mesopotamia as early as the Eocene epoch some 50 million years ago; among written records, an Akkadian cuneiform text from around 2500 BC mentions the date palm as a cultivated tree. Bas-relief sculptures from the palace of Sennacharib in Niveveh, Iraq carved in the 7th C. B.C. clearly depict cultivated groves.

Remedies for Adversity

De Dentium aegritudine: Dial' XCIIII O^2 (of ^6) (Decaying Teeth) De aegritudine Tibiar: Dial' XCV (A ching legs) De Caecitate: Dialogus XCVI (Blundness)

This is the 1st collected edition on which the poet based his claim to fame, + the only ed. published during the 15th C. the most important of all Petrarch's Latin works in this volume is his collection of Epistles formed by himself in his lifetime.

The author's celebrated book on how to conduct one's life in the face of good + ill fortune. This longest of Petrarch's prose works is divided into two extended dialogues between ellegorical commentators, the 1st being Reason + Joy, the 2nd between Reason + Sorrow, c the message emerging that humans should seek not prosperity + plenty, but sufficiency. The test is much more lively + delightful, than most tracts on morality, as the author provides instruction under not only the expected chapters about death + riches, but also under such headings as pleasant smells, elephants + camels, the clearness of the air, + coming out of prision. The book also has considerable medical interest c dialogues in the 2nd part dealing c sickness, gout, epidermal infections, the plague, toothache, leg pains, blindness, stomach disorders, madness + other maladies.

Psalter (Ge'ez title, Mazmura Dawit) or Psalms of David, usually called a "Dawit" in Ethiopian tradition. The Psalter in Ethiopia usually contains other texts in addition to the Psalms, namely the Canticles of the Prophets (Mazmura Nabiyyat) + the Praises of Mary (Weddase Maryam) The Psalter is one of the commenest Ethiopian manuscript texts.

Written in the Ge'ez language, in a single column on 19 scared lines in black ink c red headings. 2 lines along upper margin in smaller neat hand in black ink on the recto.

latter half of the 18th C or 1st part of the 19th C

recto --> end of Psalm 103/104 + the opening of Psalm 104/105* (in red) verso --> continuation of Psalm 104/105. * in the Western Bible recension.

Ethiopic is a Semitic language basically not very different from Arabic. In 2 respects, however, Ethiopic script is unique in the Semitic family: it is written from left to right (perhaps, an indication that this script was introduced c Christianity, by Greeks) and it is not purely consonantal, but shows vowel sounds by attaching various dashes + loops to one corner or another of the letters, so becoming not an alphabet, but a syllabary of 287 characters including numerals + Amharic modifications.
