Ferial Psalter and Breviary. France, Autun: 1472.

Latin. 14.8x21.5 cm. Vellum. 2 columns, 31 lines Written in dark brown ink in a gothic hand. Ruled lightly with plummet, pin prickings visible along outer edge. Rubricated with alternating blue + red 1 + 2 line intitals. 2 line initials conain tiny guide letters. - Commune plurimorum Martyrum -

Hymn: Rex gloriose martyrum. Hymn: Sanctorum meritis inclita gaudia.

The most ancient + venerable portion of the Breviary is the Psalter. In the Middle Ages the psalms were usually recited throughout the week according to several different patterns. As a result the psalms in the Breviaries may be arranged in their biblical = numerical order, or in their liturgical order. When arranged in the later way they form a ferial Psalter. Psalm 95 Venite, exultemus.

- There are many beautiful woodcut capitals + pieces of border decoration in J. Zainer's books not otherwise illustrated especially between 1473 + 1476, (see #566 + #343) - Liber bibliae moralis - a Bible lectionary - the book did for the whole Bible what the Gospel Lectionaries did for the New Testament. They divided the Biblical text in portions to be read at certain occasions or on certain days. - This book is very interesting for printing methods of the 15th C. It has been set up by 2 compositors, one of which made the 1st + last quires, another the remainder.

HEHL 84700 rub. in red my leaf - L4 (of 10) Liber Secudus Regnm begins L3 (of 10) ends m1 (of 10) Total capitulum I to - "Vicesimuscd'm." The paper of my leaf appeers to have just "chain lines" without any "laid lines" being present. The copy at the Huntington is similar, although on some leaves there is a suggestion of laid lines.

- Bark paper is still made in the Otomi village of San Pablito (Puebla), using an ancient preColumbian method made as it was in the 1300's. - Maya books, codicies, were created by writing on both sides of a thin sheet of bark, which was then folded like a concertina. Only 4 have survived.

- Natura + Otomi Indiana - the 2 largest of Mexico's indigenous groups. This bark paper is boiled + soaked over night until soft enough for the fibers to pull apart. It is then pounded using a rectangular rock with finger grooves until the pulp is evenly spread out in the shape the paper - maker wants. The color + grain of the paper depends on the bark used ot make it. Th typical coffee color comes from the Jonote tree (ficus family), white from the Xalama Limon, + the silvery beige color from the Mora (mulberry family)
