Dear Doctor:

Phillips Brooks wrote:

"No man or woman of the humblest sort can really be strong, gentle, pure and good, without somebody being helped and comforted by the very existence of that goodness."

He must have been refering to you.

"An Unforgettable Character"

Her name is Dr. Miriam Van Waters.

She is known throughout the United States as one of the greatest penologists of her time.

For the past eighteen years she has been the Superintendent of the Women's Reformatory, Framigham, Massachusetts.

To the students here she has been and is a great inspiration. She has made them feel and know that life is a precious thing and wellworth living.

She has fought bitterly to prove her thearies of penology, one of which is that a person's character can be changed for the better through understanding + spiritual help. These are two things many girls have never known.

She is a firm believer in selfhelp. She is fighting and will continue (over)

to fight to make this possible. She believes that self-help is the forerunner of self-respect. Self respect is a very important thing because what is a person where their self respect is gone? Why, nothing of course!

We, the students of the Women's Reformatory, hail her, not as the outstanding woman of the year, but as the outstanding woman of the past eighteen years.

Thank you sincerely, Dr. Van Waters, for all you have done for us.

Happy Anniversary!
