{12}Cardus Benedictus water, usually
called the holy Thistle

The proprotion afore named of seeds and ale, and a
pound of Cardus and betany together, to euery gallon
of Ale with raisons of the sunne stoned, and ginger -
and figgs sliced, makes an excellent comfortable
water

{13}To make Bezoar water, which
is called the water of life

Take good greeke wine or sack of the best you can gett
and pleasant, distill it in a lymbeck, or other still
3 times and after in a glasse still twice, which being
done, it will come to the spirit of wine which you must
preserue to your use in thick glasses, of many gallons
you shall haue but a small quantity, being soe often
drawne, then take damaske rose water a quart, or a
pottle, and put into it great treacle of uenice, a pretty
quantity, & still it in a glasse still, and keepe it close
and when you will make the water, take as much rose
water, as of the spirit of wine, put into euery pinte
half a pounde of white sugger candy fine beaten then
take a little quantity of Ambergris, muske Bezer
stone, white saunderes, and let them boyle in the
liquor and soe keepe it and when you will use it strain
it

Take 12 gallons of a strong ale as you can gett, and a
peck of harden snailes 4 . or . 5 . ounces of harts horne
and as much cloues, you must take your snailes and
roaste them in charcole fire letting them lye till they
hisse or make a noise, then take them out and wipe them
and the shell also uery cleane with a linnen cloth, beate
them in a morter, and lay them to steep in your ale
all night, likwise you must take 2 . handsfull of salendine
which you must put in the morning following into
your lymbeck with the harts horne and cloues above named
